College Football Playoffs: Round 1 Review
ESPN Writer

24 41

Player of the Game: TE Roberto Mazza - 10 catches, 92 receiving yards, 2 touchdowns

Summary
Oklahoma's offense completely outpaced the upstart Rice Owls, with 497 yards in total offense in their 41-24 shellacking in the first round. The Sooners exploded with 21 points in the second quarter alone while the Owls managed a sad field goal to avoid the shutout. Oklahoma quarterback Nick Lopes guided the ship with an exceptional performance, throwing 346 passing yards and four touchdowns to only a single interception, completing 81% of his passes. On the flip side, Rice quarterback Isaiah Gee played amicably in a losing effort, throwing 204 passing yards and two touchdowns, while also completing an impressive 69% of his passes. However, the run game was never much of a factor and the 21-point deficit heading into the second half was far too much for the Owls to overcome.

The Sooners will take on in-state rival Oklahoma State in the Rose Bowl.

41 17

Player of the Game: HB Lamar Lecounte - 22 carries, 119 rushing yards

Summary
It felt as though Penn State being the underdog was more due to the fact that they lost to Ohio State in the Big 10 Championship game rather than on merit, because Cincinnati really had no business being the 8th seed. The Nittany Lions made sure of that after a 41-17 beatdown of the Bearcats, having the game in a vice-grip by half-time with a 23-3 lead. It never felt like the game was close, with the Nittany Lions having 19 first downs and 68 total plays, suffocating the Bearcats' opportunities to create any offense. Cincinnati converted on 20% of the third down opportunities, seeing their drives really dying before it ever got the opportunity to take off.

The Nittany Lions, the only underdog seed to win their first round matchup, will take on the number one SMU Mustangs in the Peach Bowl.

28 35

Player of the Game: HB Kris Stock - 17 carries, 71 rushing yards, 3 touchdowns

Summary
The Ohio State Buckeyes outpaced the Clemson Tigers all game long, beating them in total offense yards, total plays, even having a higher third down conversion rate. And somehow, Clemson came from behind, down 28-25 going into the fourth quarter, and managed to rip the rug from underneath Ohio State's feet. Clemson took all of the risk, going for it on fourth down and converting and going for two in their lone score in the third quarter. Quarterback Ben Baity did just enough to keep the Tigers afloat, throwing for 269 passing yards and a touchdown while Buckeyes quarterback Spencer Lewis threw for 312 passing yards and two touchdowns. Ryan Day and Ohio State is going back to the drawing board, wondering what else can they do to return to prominence.

Clemson will move on and take on the Miami Hurricanes in the Fiesta Bowl.

28 42

Player of the Game: QB Ben Brown - 27/37, 398 passing yards, 4 touchdowns

Summary
Oregon and TCU battled in the first quarter, entering the second quarter tied at 14 a piece before the Ducks offense continued to roll. The Horned Frogs fell behind and before they knew it, they were down 35-14. They scored two touchdowns to get themselves back into the fight, but once the Ducks scored another touchdown in the dying moments of the fourth quarter, the door had been slammed shut. Ducks quarterback Ben Brown played like a superstar, throwing 398 passing yards and four touchdowns, completing 72% of his passes. TCU quarterback Kurt Eagles was cruising as well, throwing 388 passing yards and four touchdowns of himself, but two interceptions absolutely collapsed TCU in their offensive shootout.

The Ducks will take on the #2 Alabama Crimson Tide in the Sugar Bowl.

BREAKING NEWS: Aguyei joins Sarkisian's staff at Florida State, will not coach on Saturday against Penn State
By Veronica Downs | SMU Daily

DALLAS -- It has been announced that SMU offensive coordinator Kwame Aguyei has signed a three-year deal to join incoming head coach Steve Sarkisian at Florida State as their new offensive coordinator. SMU has announced that, rather than waiting until the end of SMU's upcoming playoff run, Aguyei will leave the team immediately.

Head coach Nico Augustine is expected to call plays for the offense in their quarterfinal matchup in the Peach Bowl against Penn State, a role that had been given exclusively to Aguyei upon his promotion last off-season.

This move comes out of nowhere considering how much of a loyalist Aguyei has been to SMU head coach Nico Augustine. Notably, Aguyei was a former player of Augustine's back in Canada when Augustine was the head coach of Western University in London, Ontario. Aguyei would become the wide receiver's coach for Western before being promoted to the offensive coordinator before Augustine was let go from the team.

Upon Augustine's hiring as the offensive coordinator at Arkansas State under former head coach Butch Jones, Aguyei was brought along as the wide receiver's coach, proving integral in the development of Arkansas State receivers such as Corey Rucker and J.J. Harrell. Two years later when Augustine was tapped as the head coach at SMU, Aguyei came along as the wide receiver's coach once again, this time under offensive coordinator Tony Sanchez.

Sanchez headed to San Jose State after a few years leading one of the hottest offenses in recent history. Aguyei finally got his shot as a Division I coordinator, leading the SMU back to one of the most electric offenses in the country and right back to the College Football Playoffs and another ACC Championship.

This comes after shockwaves of improper actions was levied against SMU, Coach Augustine, and both former and current coordinators, amongst other staff. Whether Aguyei is included in that group has yet to be seen. Aguyei has yet to comment about the matters, nor his hiring to Florida State, apart from a social media post confirming his move.

Former Ole Miss head coach Kane Pryor is expected to be tapped as Sarkisian's defensive coordinator for the Seminoles in the coming days.

This comes after rumors of Nico Augustine leaving SMU at the end of their playoff run after a reported divide between him and management, replacing Sarkisian at Texas.

The Longhorns have publicly announced interviews with former Arizona State boss Kenny Dilligham and Georgia offensive coordinator Willie Scruggs. No contact with Augustine has been confirmed by the team yet.

Same plays, wouldn't make sense to completely flip the playbook a few days before the game. Playcalling itself might change up a bit since its a different philosophical approach between Augustine and Aguyei.

SMU's relentless run game, defense slides past Penn State in Peach Bowl

Image
‣ SMU tight end Dwayne Kasay proved why he's a top five talent in the upcoming NFL draft with this highlight reel touchdown

Score

FINAL 1 2 3 4 T
#1 SMU 14 0 14 10 38
#9 Penn State 0 7 3 9 19

Game Summary

#1 SMU quickly made #9 Penn State realize why you cannot - under any circumstances - start slow against the Mustangs. Their offense is relentless and once it gets going, it smothers you and washes you away until there is nothing left. This is exactly what happened the the Nittany Lions in the Peach Bowl, after SMU scored two quick touchdowns in the first quarter that ended in a triumphant 38-19 victory.

Quarterback Alonzo Cheeseman started things off quickly, taking a read option to the house on a 24-yard run that allowed him to showcase his athleticism off the bat. Penn State quarterback Tony O'Malley had the opportunity to match Cheesemen punch for punch when he didn't see SMU edge rusher Davon Kamara - typically breathing down his neck - dropping into coverage. He dropped right underneath star wide receiver Addison Kirksey. With a full head of steam and no one able to catch him, Kamara scored a pick-six.

"It's not often I get the opportunity to get a catch in a game," said Kamara, who finished the game with only half a sack - a far cry from his 4.5 sacks he got against Miami in the ACC Championship Game. "Hopefully this will make Coach [Nico Augustine] draw up some plays for me on offense."

The Nittany Lions would eventually get back in the game, scoring the lone points in the second quarter thanks to John Okoye beating cornerback Kaseem Boykins to the back of the end zone for a touchdown. But a strong effort from SMU's top two pass catchers - wide receiver Marquis Avant and now three-time Mackey Trophy winning tight end Dwayne Kasay - quickly spelled an end to any comeback attempts from Penn State.

This was head coach Nico Augustine's first time calling plays for the Mustangs. having left the job to former offensive coordinators Tony Sanchez and Kwame Aguyei, and he made sure to stick to the gameplan that was left by Aguyei after he promptly left SMU for Florida State.

"I'm not going to get into the weeds about about happened with him, but I give a lot of credit to our guys for turning the page that quickly," said Coach Augustine. "It's hard when someone you trust decides to do something blatantly against you, but the guys are resilient and they proved that tonight."

SMU will await the rest of the results of the College Football Quarterfinals to see who they face next.

College Football Playoffs: Quarterfinals Review
ESPN Writer

20 19

Player of the Game: SAM Louis Boothe - 7 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks

Summary
Could you ask for any more fireworks from the Rose Bowl? Oklahoma felt dead in the water after a scoreless third quarter that had Oklahoma State up 13-10. They couldn't buy a third down conversion if they begged and pleaded. But the Cowboys couldn't buy a knockout punch themselves, and eventually, the dam had to break. The Sooners managed to pull ahead at the most opportunistic time, proving just enough time for the better team to pull ahead. It didn't help that Oklahoma State quarterback Dallas Stock was their most productive rusher with 20 yards on the ground ... on 23 attempts.

19 38

Player of the Game: MIKE Keke Madden - 10 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, forced fumble

Summary
SMU was efficient and struck exactly when they needed to in their beatdown of the Penn State Nittany Lions. The Mustangs are a tough team to keep up with offensively, and there is nothing worse that Penn State could have done than spotting them points. Edge rusher Davon Kamara scoring a touchdown in the first quarter felt almost like a fate worse than death. The Lions scored in spurts, but the Mustangs really never stopped rolling all game long.

The Nittany Lions, the only underdog seed to win their first round matchup, will take on the number one SMU Mustangs in the Peach Bowl.

40 13

Player of the Game: CB Kareem Nwachukwu - 6 tackles, 2 interceptions

Summary
It feels as though the only team the Miami Hurricanes thought could punch them in the face like this was SMU, like they did in the ACC Championship Game. Guess they didn't think it through until Clemson was up 27-13 going into the fourth quarter that maybe these Tigers are for real and they have no answer for their offense? Ben Baity is probably the third best quarterback in the playoffs behind Alonzo Cheeseman and Ben Brown and he proved it, throwing for 255 passing yards and 2 touchdowns on good efficiency, not to mention his eight-yard scamper in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach for Clemson. Quarterback Braylon Burnette is going to want his last game of his collegiate career back, with two costly interceptions thrown.

48 34

Player of the Game: CB Trevon Blunt - 10 tackles, interception, 2 pass breakups, forced fumble, 2 fumble recoveries

Summary
The Sugar Bowl was truly the tale of two halves, as Alabama fought hard to enter the second half on top. They scored where they needed to, and their defense held as strong against a tough Oregon as it could. However, the blame game has a clear name for the Crimson Tide as to why they lost: turnovers. Three of them to be exact. Branden Tapp, the quarterback that took over for Keelon Russell, threw two interceptions on his 48 pass attempts, and it deflated Alabama's offense every time they lost a key possession. Meanwhile Oregon QB Ben Brown continues to be the MVP of the College Football Playoffs, throwing four more touchdowns as well as 332 passing yards
