No. 15 Miami upsets No. 4 Stanford as Cardinal unable to finish drives
No connection has been as reliable as Earl Nienhuis to Rodney Cookus in the last two seasons.

In the final minute of the first half, the Stanford duo had a chance to take the lead heading into the half as Cookus was wide open for a touchdown but Nienhuis overthrew him which would be the perfect encapsulation for Stanford on Saturday afternoon, unable to make the plays that were to be made while Miami took care of their business, beating Stanford 32-20.

Miami would extend their lead at the half with another field goal to make it 23-14, buoyed by an earlier pick six from Nienhuis. The third quarter started positively for the Cardinal with a three-and-out by the Hurricanes but on fourth and four from the Miami 40-yard line, the reliable connection of Nienhuis to Cookus failed again with Cookus being unable to survive contact as he went to the ground, turning the ball over on downs.

Miami's Angelo Worthy would, leaping over a defender and hanging on to the ball for a 37-yard completion to set up Tyrone Dailey's scramble three plays later to make it 30-14.

Even when Stanford would find success, it would be short lived. They scored late in the third quarter on a completion to Shawn Butler but on the two point conversion with a chance to make it a one possession game, Nienhuis would be stripped of the football and returned for a touchdown, extending the lead to twelve.

"We just didn't play, didn't compete to the level that we are capable of competing at," Stanford coach Bubba Mack said after the game, "We had a chance before the half, didn't do anything with it. We get a stop early in the second, didn't do anything with it. They made plays, we didn't. I think the guys are going to be very disappointed in themselves when they watch the tape because the game was there to be had but we just didn't want it or maybe they wanted it more than we did."

They have several chances in the fourth quarter as the Stanford defense held but the offense was unable to capitalize, most notably at the six minute mark where Stanford was driving with the ball on Miami's 18-yard line when Malik Marshall tried to leap over his own teammate that had fallen down and the ball was jarred loose from him for a fumble which was recovered in the endzone by Miami, ending all hopes of a comeback.
