Oklahoma Bullies Tulsa In Rain Soaked Affair
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: November 10th, 2029

On a dreary rain-drenched afternoon at Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, the Oklahoma Sooners shook off the rust of a late bye week to pummel the visiting Tulsa Hurricanes 45-7 behind a steady rushing attack, led by Heisman favorite Oscar Robledo, and a suffocating defensive front that notched six sacks and 20 tackles for loss, limiting the Hurricanes to just 231 total yards.

It wasn't the dominant start the Sooners faithful had in mind, as the contest entered halftime at 21-7 after Enrique Dahl led a spirited two-minute drill before finding senior receiver Josh Smith for the 21-yard score. However, it would be the last time the Hurricane's reached the end zone as the Sooners rattled off 24 straight points after the half to completely pull away.

Oscar Robledo finished the contest with 138 rushing yards, another 66 receiving yards, and one touchdown as he sat out most of the third and all of the fourth quarters in the contest.

In his postgame press conference Coach Leon acknowledged the impact the weather had on his offense while continuing to praise his defense's effort.

•••

Question One - James McDavid (OU Daily): "Coach, despite the lopsided final score your offense struggled mightily in the first half as Cole Welliver entered the tunnel with just 11 completions against 22 attempts. What had more of an impact on the rust the offense showed, the Hurricanes defensive scheme, or the weather?"

Armando Leon: "No slight to the Hurricanes, they came out and competed and never quit. I don't think anyone expected a 14-point game at the half. But I also can't sit here and dismiss the impact the weather had. We're predicated on speed and flow, two things the weather slowed down. Before anyone says it, I know—the Tulsa offense played in the same conditions. This is more a lesson for us that we need to be prepared to execute regardless of the weather. We can't have seven drops, period. The JUGGS machine is going to be getting some extra reps this week, that's for sure."

Question Two - Jason Neilhouse (The Collegian): "Enrique Dahl had a quiet night in the midst of a spectacular season. What was your defensive game plan to slow down one of the best quarterbacks in the American?"

Armando Leon: "Enrique is a great quarterback and I made sure to seek him out after the game and let him know that. He's got a ton of talent and I wouldn't be surprised at all to see him at the next level after this season. It's hard to stay in rhythm and make plays when you're being constantly hit, and that's what Enrique was dealing with tonight. We sent pressure from everywhere and never let him get comfortable. The one drive where we were passive and dropped coverage, he punished us in the two-minute drill."

Question Three - Meg Semental (SEC Network): "With the final non-conference game out of the way, your team will now prepare for the final two conference games of the season, Senior Night against LSU then on the road against the Texas A&M Aggies. If you win, you're in the championship game. Did you think when you took this job that you'd be in a position to give the Sooners their first SEC Championship in year one?"

Armando Leon: "The only expectation I had coming here was to continue doing what I've done at every stop in my career. Build a culture that demands excellence, prepares the right way, and gives it their all on the field. If you do that and compete the right way, the wins are going to come. I didn't have a number of trophies, or conference championships in mind taking the job. I knew that if I won, those would come in time. So am I surprised? No. We expected to win from Day 1 and we're going to keep expecting to win until someone proves us wrong."

There isn't much to say about this one folks. Tulsa, meet frying pan.

I will say, the rust and lack of execution in the passing game is concerning. You can tell Robledo didn't have the same burst he was showing earlier this season—could have been the field conditions, could be he's running on empty. You have to assume at some point one of our upcoming SEC opponents is going to stack the box and dare Cole to beat them.

I've seen Cole sling it with the best of them, but based on the showing we saw today, it would be hard to bet on him beating LSU or A&M on his own if Robledo is really running on empty.

For now, we move. Cautiously optimistic that the rust is merely rust, and not a foreshadowing of a bigger issue.

2029 Week Twelve Preview - #25 LSU (7-4) @ #7 Oklahoma (9-1)
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: November 16th, 2029

The Oklahoma Sooners will welcome the 25th-ranked LSU Tigers to Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium for the final home game of the 2029 regular season as they hope to send off their graduating seniors in style with a "Senior Night" victory.

Before we get to the game coverage, I want to take this time to congratulate all 20 seniors who are set to graduate after this season. No matter if you were a starter, special teams ace, or simply a veteran locker room presence, your impact on the Oklahoma Sooners program will be missed. We wish all of the graduating seniors the best and hopefully, football Gods willing, we'll be sending them out the right way.

That being said, let's see how we measure up to the LSU Tigers before we dive right into the wagon for another "Schooner Scoop."

Schooner Scoop

BT: "Senior Night, Coach Leon. How much does it mean to you, and the program, to send the senior class out of here with a win tonight?"

AL: "It means a lot to me, our staff, our leadership group, but most importantly, the guys on our roster. Most of the graduating class was here in 2026 when Mateer won the Heisman and the Sooners had an undefeated regular season, just to lose to Texas in the SEC Championship, then again in the Playoff as they watched the Longhorns march to a championship. They fell on some pretty hard times after that, so I'm glad we could give them one more positive season and hopefully, keep the good times rolling with another victory."

BT: "With this being the last home game of the season-"

AL: "Not so fast, Boone. We haven't secured anything yet. We very well could be here hosting a playoff game if we slip up, or even worse, sitting at home watching. We aren't going to project ahead just yet. This is our last regular season game, for sure, however we may get one more chance for the fans to see our seniors."

BT: "Fair enough, Coach. What I was going to ask, is this potentially the last time the fans could see Oscar Robledo on the field as well? The redshirt junior is considered the runaway favorite to win the Heisman with many speculating he'll parlay that success into a Day One draft pick this spring."

AL: "We haven't had those conversations with Oscar yet, there's still plenty of season ahead of us. If he decides he needs to use this season as a springboard to the NFL, no one here will fault him. Selfishly, I'd love to have him back. But at the end of the day, these young men have to do what is best for their careers. Like I said though, still a lot of season left, anything could happen. For the fans wondering, I'd tell them to enjoy every minute he's here."

BT: "The pressure is still on to keep winning to secure your spot in the SEC Championship Game. With that, do you find yourself secretly rooting for Tennessee or Arkansas this week, to help clear a path for you to the championship game?"

AL: "Are you trying to get me run out of town, Boone? I damn sure am not going to admit to rooting for the Vols or the Razorbacks. I will say, if they were able to give us some help by knocking off Georgia or South Carolina, it would be much appreciated."

•••

This is a huge game for a number of reasons for the Oklahoma Sooners and their playoff hopes going into the final two games of the 2029 campaign. They have to win, point blank, or risk being on the outside looking in of not only the conference championship, but the playoffs.

Add in the fact that I'm sure he'll have the seniors raring to go in quite possibly their final game in Norman, and I doubt this game will get out of hand.

These Tigers are explosive, led by a surgical passer in Karle Lacey Jr. but much like Texas, they lack defense. I think Robledo has the type of performance you look at during Heisman voting and say 'that's the moment it was decided' and the defense does just enough to keep the Tigers from marching up and down the field.

It'll be close, but give me our boys. 24 LSU, 35 Oklahoma.

Sooners Stack 32-Straight Points For Senior Night W
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: November 17th, 2029

With 7 minutes left in the 2nd half, it looked like the LSU Tigers simply wanted to win more than the seventh-ranked Oklahoma Sooners did. Then, the eruption came. Oklahoma rattled off 32 straight points after falling into an early 14-6 hole to leave the Tigers whimpering out of Norman with a 38-14 defeat.

On the opening drive, Armando Leon stayed aggressive as ever going for it on 4th-and-2 from midfield. The bold strategy backfired, with Oscar Robledo being stuffed for a four-yard loss. To add insult to injury, LSU's halfback Brian Quitoriano turned in a pair of runs to quickly put the Tigers in the end zone.

Oklahoma would rally on consecutive drives deep into Tiger territory, only to stall out and settle for field goals. It wasn't long after Brian Rowe's second field goal that Quitoriano struck again, slashing through the Sooners defense for a 79-yard run, putting the senior over 100 yards before half.

Coach Leon and defensive coordinator Kirk Ferentz were both visibly upset on the sideline, laying into every Sooner starter as they came off the field following the run. Whatever the message was, it inspired the Sooners' defense. Of the 190 total yards the Tigers gained in the contest, 121 of them came before Quitoriano's touchdown as they completely shut out the Tigers for the remainder of the game, leaving Karle Lacey Jr. battered, bruised, and humiliated by the final whistle.

Cole Welliver would rally the Sooners for back-to-back touchdowns after Quitoriano's run to give the Sooners a 20-14 lead at the half before the Sooners added 18 more points after the halftime break to finish off the Tigers, whose last three drives all ended with interceptions.

•••

Question One - James McDavid (OU Daily): "Coach, Brian Quitoriano ran for 103 yards on just four carries after his 79-yard explosion in the second quarter. Puzzlingly, the Tigers offense only handed the ball to him two more times the remainder of the contest, resulting in -1 yards. How surprised were you not only about Quitoriano's early success, but the Tiger's decision not to keep giving him the ball after his early success?"

Armando Leon: "LSU has thrown the ball over 65% of the time this season, so their early utilization of Quitoriano caught us off guard to be sure. But that's nothing compared to our surprise when he barely saw the ball after the touchdown run. I mean, they did swing it to him out of the backfield a bunch, but the lack of carries between the tackles had both Kirk and I scratching our heads. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they did it. They went completely one-dimensional and we generated six sacks, four of them after the half, and three interceptions thanks to that. Just a curious decision and one I don't think Kenny is going to live down anytime soon, James."

Question Two - Caine Lafitte (The Reveille): "Despite having the Heisman favorite in Oscar Robledo, your team came out with an emphasis on the passing game and Cole Welliver delivered with a pair of first-half touchdowns and 240 yards through the first half. Obviously, Oscar got his in the end, but what about the Tigers' defense made you utilize the passing game to set up Robledo down the stretch?"

Armando Leon: "They got me on the opening drive, not gonna lie. We thought we could muscle them off the line on 4th-and-short and they stuffed it. So, we decided to pivot, get their big guys in space and pick 'em apart. Hats off to Cole, he put on a heckuva performance. I mean, before he threw that late Hail Mary interception, he only had two incompletions. His efficiency backed up the Tigers' defense, and Oscar ate from there. I know all the talk this year has been about Oscar, but if Cole isn't keeping the defense honest, I think Oscar is facing a lot more filled boxes than he has."

Question Three - Meg Semental (SEC Network): "With South Carolina's win earlier today, they've clinched their spot in the SEC Championship Game. However, if you lose to A&M next week it opens the door on a potential chaotic chain of events with as many as four teams potentially at 6-2 in conference play. I know you always preach one game at a time, but how do you manage that with the obvious acknowledgement that if you lose, you could find yourself not only out of the Championship Game, but the Playoff as well?"

Armando Leon: "Focusing on one game at a time doesn't mean ignoring the gravity of our situation. We always know what is on the line, we just make sure that we're prioritizing the right things. If we're focusing on what the win can do for our season, and not what we can do to win the game, our head isn't in the right spot. And when you do that, you can't be surprised when someone kicks the door in on you. We're well aware of our standing for both the conference Championship Game, and the Playoff. We'll be ready."

This was the type of game I needed to see out of Cole to really believe this team can make a run. You saw nearly eight men in the box at one point early in this game, daring Welliver to beat them. Once he did, the Tigers were scrambling and they never recovered.

If Cole can bring that same moxie to College Station, I like our chances of finishing 11-1 and punching our ticket to Atlanta.

The seniors went out on top, the Sooners took care of business, and now we're one win away from potentially competing for the first SEC Championship in Oklahoma history.

Boomer Sooner, baby.

2029 Week Thirteen Preview - #5 Oklahoma (10-1) @ #6 Texas A&M (9-2)
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: November 23rd, 2029

It's Week 13 folks, and the Oklahoma Sooners find themselves in the position every team hopes for with one game left in the season: win, and you're in.

With the Georgia Bulldogs' loss to the Tennessee Volunteers last week, along with a South Carolina victory, there is only one spot left in the SEC Championship Game, a spot that will be the Sooners should they finish 7-1 in conference play, tied with the Gamecocks and a game up on the rest of the competition.

Standing in their way is a 9-2 Texas A&M Aggies squad that will be looking to play spoiler, with their own Conference Championship hopes already dashed and a spot in the College Football Playoff almost guaranteed with their current ranking of sixth. Even with a loss to the Sooners, who are ranked higher, it's hard to imagine the Aggies falling completely out of the playoff with a week to go.

We'll see how we stack up with our rivals down south before getting to the final regular season edition of "Schooner Scoop!"

Schooner Scoop

BT: "Quite possibly one of the most enviable positions in all of sports, Coach Leon. Win and you're in. What would it mean to take the Oklahoma Sooners to the SEC Championship Game in your first year, especially after all of the criticism you had to overcome?"

AL: "It would mean we're doing what I set out to do, Boone. I was brought here to build this program back into the powerhouse its name carried. You can agree or disagree with my hiring, but I think the numbers speak for themselves. I understand the criticism that was leveled against me by those who bleed Crimson and Cream. I don't hold any of it against anyone, even you, Boone. At the end of the day, this fanbase wanted someone to restore them to their glory. Winning heals all, period. And, we certainly plan on doing more winning."

BT: "As Oscar Robledo puts the finishing touches on what appears to be a Heisman-worthy campaign, what do you say to those who question the balance of the team? Of the Sooners' 5,432 yards on the season, Oscar has 2,230 of them, a jarring 41%. Additionally, do you have any worries that should Oscar get hurt, or if a defense successfully limits his impact, the offense will falter as a result?"

AL: "It's kind of a no-win situation for Jerry Mack and me now, Boone. If we try and go away from relying on his playmaking abilities, and we lose, everyone is going to question why we stopped feeding our bell cow. If we continue to utilize him and he gets hurt, suddenly we should have rested him more. We're going to execute the game plan we feel gives us the best chance to win and adjust from there. If something happens to Oscar, whether injury or a team taking him away, we have the full confidence that Cole and the guys can get it done when push comes to shove."

BT: "Obviously, Robledo is up for a number of awards in addition to the Heisman and he's not the only Sooner who may bring home some hardware. Currently Karlos Vigil, Kyle Brink, and DeMarco Slayton are in the top three for their respective awards as well. However, despite a 10-1 record and the fifth overall ranking, you aren't among the 12 projected finalists for the Bear Bryant Coach of the Year award. Is that a slight, or simply the fact that there are so many quality coaching efforts this year?"

AL: "Awards are great, Boone, but I couldn't care less if I never win a Bear Bryant award. I doubt anyone is going to say at my funeral "And he won X number of Bear Bryant's." So I don't care. Some of these awards are about politics, and that's one of them. They don't want only the best coach, he has to be in the right program, with the right media personality. My style doesn't mesh with everyone, and that's alright. They can keep the award and I'll take the trophies instead."

If I need to say anything else to get y'all ready for this game, you don't bleed Crimson and Cream. I think even with a loss, we're a shoo-in for the playoffs.

But we don't want to just make the playoffs, we've done that. We want to go in and get that bye week, get a major bowl game, and really put the Sooners back on the map.

I think we get it done. A&M has talent, but there's nothing about them that screams dominant. More so, they reek of "really good."

Oklahoma 35, Texas A&M 17.

Let LSU think they had a chance and then you went and smoked their ass.

This might be the year, which is impressive to do off rip.

The James Bowl comment by Chill made me laugh.

I was glad I was able to win a Natty with Tulsa in CFB25.

You continuing to beat asses. Is this the season of destiny?

ground em down then took over.

Kinda conflicted on the Title chances this year. Doing it off rip is impressive, but also sets it up to have anything less after this be a let down. We ain't throwing any games round here, but if we don't make it I won't be completely heartbroken

Tulsa actually gave me a decent game too lol I don't think anyone would have expected only 45 points.

Like I said above, conflicted on the season of destiny. It would be cool, but then also sets up every year to be championship or bust. I wouldn't mind a gradual build up :curtain:

Next Stop, Atlanta! Sooners Pull Away In Second Half To Clinch SEC Championship Berth
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: November 24th, 2029

For the first two quarters of the heavyweight bout between the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas A&M Aggies, neither side looked ready to yield as they battled to a 10-6 halftime score with physical defense and limited opportunities. The second half, however, became the game the Heisman voters will point to when announcing Oscar Robledo's name in New York, as he completely took over to bury his former teammates with 123 yards and two touchdowns after the half to carry the Sooners to a 34-13 victory and clinch their spot in the SEC Championship Game.

While Robledo finally provided the spark the Sooners needed, it was the relentless defense of Armando Leon that kept the Aggies at bay long enough for Robledo's engine to warm up. Aggies QB Brady Hart opened the game a dazzling 9/10 as they parlayed an early interception by Cole Welliver into the first points of the contest with a chip-shot 30-yard field goal.

But once the Sooners' defense started getting home, Hart was rattled and everything fell apart for A&M. An explosive run from Deondrae Riden, compiling 40 of his eventual 50 yards in the contest, set up the second A&M field goal in the half, but the thread was already unraveling on A&M.

Hart absorbed 10 sacks over the final three quarters, turning what was a sparkling afternoon to that point into a horror show as Hart finished a meager 21/32, with much of his later work coming in the fourth quarter as the Sooners were content to give the Aggies underneath routes for the sake of draining clock.

The Aggies would finally reach the end zone early in the fourth quarter, with Hart shaking off the cobwebs of his ninth absorbed sack at the time to find Tristian Norman in the end zone, but the contest would not end on a high note for the A&M squad.

After the Sooners milked over six-minutes of clock before kicking a meaningless field goal, Hart had one more opportunity in what would be his final home game at College Station. Facing 4th-and-3 from midfield, Brady Hart's three-year A&M career ended with Karlos Vigil's third sack of the contest and 14.5 on the year, moving him past Martin Chase to set the Oklahoma Sooners' single-season sack record.

•••

Question One - Johnny Mooreland (The Battalion): "Oscar Robledo's homecoming went exactly as planned for the former A&M Aggie recruit, which I don't think is a surprise for anyone who watched him put up 1,100 yards and 15 touchdowns for us last year. Despite the final gaudy numbers, Robledo was somewhat pedestrian in the first half. Was that a result of him pressing to make big plays in his return to College Station, or the defense simply keying on him?"

AL: "I think it's fair to say a little of both, Johnny. You could see it in the first half, plays he's usually a little more calculated and patient on, he was rushing, looking for the opportunity to bounce it wide and get his legs churning. We talked a little at the half, just told him to relax. He had a touchdown, the plays would come. And they did, he broke off that 31-yard scamper midway through the third and it was 'GGs' from there as the boys say."

Question Two - James McDavid (OU Daily): "Brady Hart was slicing up this defense like a Christmas prime rib before the pass rush started to get home. Were there any adjustments you made going into the second quarter to jump-start the group, or was it just a matter of time they started rattling Hart?"

Armando Leon: "They held up well in protection early, but the message to the team was clear. We're going to wear them down and erode their energy. They were active and able to keep our boys at bay in the first quarter on pure adrenaline, and that gave Brady enough time to find some minuscule windows. Once they got tired, our boys buried them, and things got really hairy for Brady in a hurry. Before we lose sight of it, shout-out to Karlos. He broke an almost 30-year Sooner record tonight after some questioned his decision to come back for his senior season. That right there shows what we're doing in Norman now: building legacies."

Question Three - Meg Semental (SEC Network): "Speaking of breaking records, Oscar Robledo is now just 285 yards away from breaking Adrian Peterson's record of 1,925 single-season rushing yards set back in 2004. With at least two games ahead of you, is it inevitable Robledo is going to find himself in the OU record book after this season?"

Armando Leon: "Well for one, Meg, he already is. He broke Joe Mixon's all-purpose yardage record with today's performance, and is one away from Billy Sims' record of 23 rushing touchdowns. We're not going to chase records, but I think it's a fair assumption he will get plenty of opportunities to continue to leave his mark in Norman."

•••

The biggest worry for the Sooners' SEC Championship hopes, playoff hopes, and beyond is the ability for the offense to keep moving the chains as all eyes continue to be on Oscar Robledo. The offense may not have been a well-oiled machine while Robledo searched for space in the Aggies' defense—which to their credit kept Robledo working well into the second half before he finally wiggled free—but they did enough to give us a lead that the defense could hold.

Oscar Robledo continues to be the man that moves the cart for the Sooners, but with a defense that takes pride in burying quarterbacks and an offense that is continuing to prove they can survive for spurts without Robledo's signature impact, they have the versatility to overcome.

I'm not buying my Oklahoma Sooners 2029 National Championship Gear just yet, but I am starting to look at hotels in Pasadena and New Orleans. With this win we're in the playoffs, even with an SEC Championship Game loss, but I fully expect this team to be the first Sooner iteration to win a playoff game, and anything less than a semiFinal berth in the Rose Bowl or Sugar Bowl will be a complete and utter disappointment.

Before we get too ahead of ourselves, however, let's focus on the next task.

On to Atlanta.
