Synopsis
Both Miami and SMU have made their way to new conferences, but after so many tilts in the ACC - mostly in the ACC Championship game - it felt like the powers that be had to start the NCAA season with another tilt between the Hurricanes and the Mustangs. The Hurricanes bring forward one of the strongest rosters in College Football, with all five of their offensive line starters featured in the Pre-season All-American teams. That's pressure. Senior quarterback Braylon Burnette has made his way to the NFL after last season, leaving behind junior Tavares Bieniemy. His athleticism and ability to extend plays outside of the pocket will have to pay off against this relentless SMU pass rush.

One of the strengths of this SMU team is going to have to be their speedy secondary full of ball hawks, namely Cole Crews. After getting dominated by Clemson in last year's National Championship game through the air, the Mustangs made it a priority to reinforce their secondary and they did just that despite losing captain and strong safety Larry Tu'ikolovatu to the portal. Quarterback Steven Bequette, named the starter for SMU as a true freshman, will have to pace this new offense under Jeff Traylor to keep up with this high-firing Miami offense.

Game Summary

A new season, a new quarterback, and the same message from SMU: they're not going anywhere.

The number four ranked SMU Mustangs opened their 2031 campaign with a commanding 35-14 victory over the number six ranked Miami Hurricanes at Hard Rock Stadium, fuelled by a breakout performance from true freshman quarterback Steve Bequette.

In his first career star, Bequette looked anything but inexperienced. The freshman phenom threw for 371 passing yards and four touchdowns, confidently leading SMU's offense in a hostile road environment and answering questions about life after Alonzo Cheeseman in emphatic fashion.

"He showed poise, touch, and command," said offensive coordinator Jeff Traylor. "He just kept pushing the ball downfield and did exactly what we asked for in our gameplan."

One of Bequette's favorite targets was a familiar name in a new role. Bobby Goodyear, who is currently making the transition from wide receiver to tight, delivered a standout performance with 102 receiving yards and two touchdowns, proving to be a mismatch all night.

The only blemish for SMU came with the loss of star wide receiver Kenyon Natson, who exited the game at halftime with an injury. His status moving forward remains unclear, casting some uncertainty over an otherwise dominant opening performance.

Miami quarterback Tavares Bieniemy did everything he could to keep the Hurricanes competitive, throwing for 371 passing yards while completing 72% of his passes. But despite his efficiency, Miami struggled to convert drives into points and couldn't keep pace with SMU's explosive scoring bursts.
