I certainly think we have the ability to as long as the injuries don’t pile up. One game at a time though

SIX PICKS AND A NICE SCORE
USF trample UAB as they continue to dominate the conference

Saturday September 29, 2029 | 3:30 PM | Protective Stadium | Birmingham, Alabama

Birmingham, Alabama - The scoreboard told the story, but it still didn’t quite capture the full extent of South Florida’s dominance.

Behind a surgical performance from quarterback Locklan Hewlett and a defense that forced six turnovers, USF rolled past UAB 69–7 in a game that quickly turned from competitive to overwhelming.

For a brief moment in the first quarter, it looked like UAB might have something to say. After Connor Suggs and Steven Snead each punched in early rushing touchdowns to give USF a 14–0 lead, the Blazers answered with a 30-yard touchdown run from Javon Verrett to cut the deficit to 14–7 late in the opening frame.

That was as close as it would get.

From that point forward, USF seized complete control. The Bulls added a field goal from Dom Bragg early in the second quarter before Suggs powered in his second touchdown of the night. Hewlett then began to stretch the field, finding Josh Barr for a short touchdown pass to push the lead to 31–7 heading into halftime.

Any hope of a second-half response from UAB was quickly erased.

Joshua Brantley stepped in for Hewlett with the ball on the one yard line and capped a methodical third-quarter drive with a 1-yard score, and then the fourth quarter turned into a showcase. Hewlett threw three touchdown passes in just over two minutes of game time—connecting with Gerald Camarda, Steven Snead, and Lyle Dragos in rapid succession—before George Shembo added a rushing touchdown of his own. Bragg closed the scoring with a 33-yard field goal as time expired.

Hewlett was in complete command all night, finishing 31-of-42 for 323 yards and four touchdowns without an interception. He distributed the ball efficiently, with Camarda leading the way on the outside with nine receptions for 137 yards, while Dragos and Snead each added touchdown catches.

On the ground, Suggs set the tone early and often, rushing for 143 yards and two scores on 18 carries. USF piled up 212 rushing yards and five touchdowns as a team, consistently winning at the line of scrimmage.

If the offense was sharp, the defense was suffocating.

UAB quarterbacks Mike Seder and Larry Simoneau combined to throw six interceptions, constantly pressured and rarely comfortable. Gavin Jenkins led the takeaway parade with two interceptions, while Ralph Livings added a dominant all-around performance with two sacks, two tackles for loss, and an interception. The Bulls held UAB to just 159 total yards and eight first downs, including a staggering 1-for-11 mark on third down.

The numbers underscored the imbalance. USF outgained UAB 558–159 in total offense and ran 83 plays to the Blazers’ 50. The Bulls converted 78 percent of their third downs and turned nearly every red-zone trip into points, while UAB failed to score after its lone first-quarter touchdown.

Even in the kicking game, USF maintained control. Bragg was a perfect 9-for-9 on extra points and added two field goals, while Elton York provided a spark in the return game with 90 punt return yards.

For UAB, there were few bright spots. Verrett’s early touchdown run and a steady defensive effort from Clayton Dixon (16 tackles) and Aaron Vereen (14 tackles) offered some resistance, but the offense never found rhythm against USF’s aggressive defense.

In every phase, USF dictated the pace, executed with precision, and capitalized on mistakes. By the time the fourth quarter avalanche arrived, the outcome had long been decided. The final score simply reflected how thoroughly the Bulls controlled the night.

USF POSTGAME REPORT
#15 USF 69 – UAB 7
Image

Offense
–USF delivered its most complete performance of the season, overwhelming UAB 69–7 in a game that quickly turned into a showcase of offensive firepower and efficiency.
–Quarterback Locklan Hewlett was in total command, completing 31 of 42 passes for 323 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions, carving up the Blazers’ defense with precision and poise.
–The Bulls struck early with back-to-back rushing touchdowns from Connor Suggs and Steven Snead, setting the tone for what would become a relentless offensive onslaught.
–Suggs once again led the ground attack, rushing for 143 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries, consistently breaking through the second level and controlling the tempo.
–USF’s balance was evident throughout, as five different players found the end zone, including Snead, Joshua Brantley, and George Shembo on the ground.
–The passing game was equally dominant, led by Gerald Camarda’s 9 receptions for 137 yards and a touchdown, while Lyle Dragos added 74 yards and a score. Snead and Josh Barr each contributed receiving touchdowns as well.
–USF piled up 558 yards of total offense and averaged 6.7 yards per play, converting 11 of 14 third downs and scoring touchdowns on nine of eleven red zone trips.
–“That’s the kind of execution we talk about every week,” Head Coach DJ Porter said. “Efficient, physical, and relentless from start to finish.
Defense
–The Bulls’ defense was nothing short of dominant, suffocating UAB’s offense and forcing six interceptions, including on each of UAB's first two possessions, in one of the most lopsided defensive performances of the year.
–Gavin Jenkins headlined the unit with two interceptions and four tackles, earning American Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors for his impact.
–Robert Livings delivered a standout performance up front, recording 2.0 sacks, two tackles for loss, and an interception, consistently disrupting UAB’s quarterbacks.
–USF held the Blazers to just 159 yards of total offense and a mere 3.2 yards per play, never allowing them to establish rhythm after their lone first-quarter touchdown run.
–Jamerson Harris added a sack and tackle for loss, while Armon Chambers contributed another interception as the secondary capitalized on errant throws throughout the game.
–UAB quarterbacks Mike Seder and Larry Simoneau combined to throw six interceptions, as the Bulls’ pressure and coverage forced mistakes on nearly every drive.
–“We were flying around, communicating, and finishing plays,” said Jenkins. “When we play like that, we’re hard to beat.
Special Teams
–Dom Bragg remained reliable, converting 2 of 3 field goals with a long of 33 yards while going a perfect 9-for-9 on extra points.
-DJ Porter was asked about Bragg's late kick with the game in hand and was accused of seeking a "childish" score. Porter explained that after Bragg missed a chip shot earlier the staff wanted to get him back out there to regain any confidence he may have lost.
–Elton York provided a spark in the return game, totaling 90 punt return yards including a long of 42 that flipped field position.
–Richard Boireau added a kick return, while coverage units limited UAB’s return opportunities and maintained strong field position throughout the game.
–UAB punter Bradley Kellum was one of the few bright spots for the Blazers, averaging 46.0 yards on five punts, but the volume reflected USF’s offensive control.
Quotables
We wanted to make a statement on the road, and I think we did that,” – DJ Porter
The line gave me time all night, and the receivers made plays. It felt like everything was clicking,” – Locklan Hewlett
We just kept our foot on the gas. That’s who we are,” – Connor Suggs
Six picks… that’s just trust and preparation showing up on Saturday,” – Gavin Jenkins
News
-Locklan Hewlett has broken the American Conference career record for passing touchdowns with 106.
–USF improves to 5–1 on the season and 2–0 in American Conference play, taking sole possession of first place.
–The Bulls have now scored 60+ points three times this season and continue to lead the conference in scoring margin.
–USF outgained UAB 558–159 and forced six turnovers while committing none.
–The win marks a statement road victory against a previously undefeated UAB squad.
–Gavin Jenkins was named American Conference Defensive Player of the Week following his two-interception performance.
Recruiting
–4 star CB Alton Dennis of Tampa has elected to sign with Miami.
Injury Notes
–No major injuries were reported for USF following the game.
–WR Lamar Sweet continues to rehab his broken wrist and remains sidelined. He is targeting a possible return for the Tulane game on 10/20 or the 11/3 game at Tulsa.
–TE Cam Deablo continues recovery from a hip injury. Deablo is likely not going to play this season but a return for the conference championship game has not been ruled out.
Next Up
–USF returns home to host Rice as the Bulls look to continue their dominant run through conference play.
