Saturday, September 6, 2030 | Gerald J. Ford Stadium (Dallas, TX)
Week 2 Preview: vs #10 TCU (1-0, 0-0)
Synopsis
The Battle for the Iron Skillet is upon us, and it features a top-ten ranked matchup between #1 SMU and #10 TCU in Dallas. The Horned Frogs bring forth their strongest roster in years against the Mustangs with hopes that this is finally the year they catch the Mustangs lacking. Quarterback Kurt Eagles has historically put forward some of his best offensive outputs against a typically lacklustre SMU secondary.
The offensive line is going to make all the difference against reigning Edge Rusher of the Year Davon Kamara. Their interior offensive line is the strength, featuring All-Big !2 selections in juniors Antoine Judge and Cedric Hazelwood at the guard spots. Running back Denario Owen is hoping to pound the rock like he did in TCU's season debut - a 42-21 thrashing of Stanford where he ran for 84 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.
TCU has historically played the Mustangs close and their defense will have to come alive against true freshman quarterback Steven Bequette, who tossed four touchdowns against a stout Hurricanes' defense in his collegiate debut. Playing tight end combo Bobby Goodspeed and Lionel Davenport will be integral to keeping that electric Mustangs' offense stuck in neutral.
Wide receiver Kenyon Natson is expected to be full-go while running back Dwayne Sowells is expected out for at least a month with a dislocated ankle he suffered in Week 1 against Miami. Brian Volson is expected to get the majority of the snaps rushing the ball, with the rest being split between Cal McCalebb and Shaq Thomas.
