Mustangs lose Bequette, but defense holds on in tight victory over Fighting Irish

Score

FINAL 1 2 3 4 T
#1 SMU 3 7 7 3 20
#3 Notre Dame 0 7 0 7 14

Game Summary

The SMU Mustangs managed to escape South Bend with a narrow loss that came at a seismic price, defeating the number three ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish 20-14 but lost starting quarterback Steven Bequette and running back Shaq Thomas to injury.

Thomas went down first, not long after providing the game's first touchdown in the second quarter with what is being described as a lower-body injury. The team has further leaned on running back Brian Volson, who has gotten the majority of the carries since last year's leading rusher, Dwayne Sowells, went down in the first week in their season opener against Miami.

Bequette initially struggled, throwing his second interception is as many games before going down with a lower body injury. Bequette initially attempted to return to the game, but an awkward throw landed him back on the sideline. Bequette initially went into the locker room but returned later, only to be seen without his helmet on the sideline. Backup quarterback, redshirt freshman Zack Wilkins, entered the game and performed admirably.

"We didn't ask him to do too much," said offensive Jeff Traylor. "It's hard to just get thrown into situations where you're not sure if you're going to see the field, but Zack was the ultimate professional and raised his level of performance right where we needed him to."

The defense played a key role in clinching the win for the Mustangs while their offense still adjusts to all of their moving parts. The pass rush forced three turnovers, staring off with Cole Crews taking an under thrown ball from Notre Dame quarterback Kevin Momah for an interception. Speaking of Momah, the Irish also had to turn to their backup, Diondre Soroh, after the veteran was knocked out of the game early.

"We haven't played our best game yet," said head coach Nico Augustine. "Our offense is still trying to connect the dots on a lot of fronts, and our defense is still figuring some things out. We need to put it all together sooner rather than later before one of our very capable opponents catches us asleep at the wheel."

The Mustangs will take their undefeated 3-0 record into Austin, Texas to take on the also-undefeated #21 Texas Longhorns on the road next week.

closer than I would have thought, but tracks with the QB injury. Just a W&T thing, or longer issue?

Just a W&T thing thankfully. We really hasn't taken off offensively like we're prone to. I figure half of it is because of the new offense and the other half is the tough schedule.

Can't be mad. Missed some horrific throws, but he made them the good ones count.

Saturday, September 20, 2030 | Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium (Austin, TX)

Week 4 Preview: at #21 Texas (3-0, 0-0)

Synopsis
The SMU Mustangs are taking on the Texas Longhorns in a Battle for the State, risking their undefeated record in their first SEC conference game after dominating the ACC all throughout the Nico Augustine era. The Longhorns present with one of the most dominant offenses the Mustangs will encounter all season long, featuring their senior quarterback, Soma Hunt. Hunt's ability to run the offense with his incredible rocket launcher of an arm will no doubt stretch the Mustangs' secondary thin. Dwayne Harris is on the Biletnikoff shortlist as one of the most talented wide receivers in the nation, and will no doubt draw SMU's Cole Crews in frequent man-on-man situations.

What Homa won't be able to accomplish with his arm, he will be able to do with his legs. Head coach Kenny Dillingham has featured a ton of power run plays with Hunt, as he is potentially the fastest running quarterback in the SEC. He has powered Texas to the best offense in the nation three weeks into the season, while the typically lethal SMU offense is still getting its feet wet.

The name of the game for SMU success is no doubt taking advantage of their moments on offense. While Texas' offense is the talk of the town, their defense is susceptible to an elite run game - one that SMU has been trying to promote early in the season behind the stout running of Brian Volson and Shaq Thomas. SMU will need their offense executing and playing mistake-free football to keep up and potentially outperform Texas in their Week 4 matchup.
