Game Summary

"I'm glad this Texas game came when it did because I fear we've become a little too used to winning," said head coach Nico Augustine after SMU managed to win on a walk-off field goal to defeat the Texas Longhorns 27-24. "We let them back in the game time and time again with bad angles of pursuit and leaving our food on the table. If this doesn't wake us up, I don't know what will."

The Mustangs spurted out to an early 10-0 lead over the Longhorns on the road thanks to running back Cal McCalebb scoring late in the opening quarter, but the offense would shutter for most of the first half afterwards. Texas would get in the end zone and on the scoreboard late in the second quarter, making Texas getting the ball in the second half feel like an ingenious move by head coach Kenny Dillingham.

The Longhorns would receive the ball and take the lead mere moments later when Longhorns quarterback Soma Hunt caught the Mustangs' defense asleep at the whee, scampering for a 78-yard run to the house, bringing the stadium to an utter eruption.

Defensive coordinator Trent McCauley takes the brunt for that decision due to play-calling. "We wanted to come out in the second half as aggressive as possible - make the quarterback feel uncomfortable. We sized up a blitz and he read it to perfect. We slid the safety over to a position that there was no way he was going to be able to track him down. That's on all of us."

All of a sudden, the Mustangs were in a bar fight, finding themselves in one of their tightest matchups in recent history. Wide receiver Kenyon Natson would get them the lead back with an impressive downfield catch into the end zone. But the Longhorns would tie things up a few moments later with a field goal.

The teams would trade touchdowns before it was the Longhorns' turn for their offense to dry up at inopportune times. SMU would get the ball in the dying moments of the game, with freshman quarterback Steven Bequette driving the team down the field just close enough for kicker Diego Rucci to close them out with a 35-yard field goal to win the game.

The Mustangs will continue their road trip next week against the Tennessee Volunteers next week before reaching a much-needed Bye week.

honestly, my biggest regret about Coastal is not taking them to the SEC instead of the ACC. May have been able to keep that bihh running with some real competition. Instead, we had Vaughn snatching Mario's chain every year
