BATTLE TESTED
USF gets tested by Tulane, survives turbulent waters

Saturday October 20, 2029 | 6:00 PM | Raymond James Stadium | Tampa, Florida
Tampa, Florida - After a three point loss against Notre Dame back in mid September USF had reeled off four straight 56+ point performances while holding those four opponents to a total of 33 points. Although a tougher test was expected with Tulane the Bulls were still expected to win comfortably. Then came the mistakes, the momentum swings, and finally, one last chance with 20 seconds left.
Locklan Hewlett made enough plays to erase the memory of his miscues, and sophomore kicker Dom Bragg delivered one of the biggest kicks of his young career as USF escaped Tulane with a dramatic 34-31 victory Saturday night in a matchup that may have been a preview of the American Conference Championship Game.
Bragg drilled a 35-yard field goal with 2 seconds left on the clock, capping a frantic final drive engineered by Hewlett after Tulane tied the game with just 19 seconds remaining.
The Bulls improved to 8-1 overall and remained unbeaten in conference play, but they were pushed to the edge by a Tulane team that refused to go away.
“This is the kind of game that tests whether you’re built for November football,” USF head coach DJ Porter said afterward. “We made mistakes, we gave them life, but our guys responded when it mattered most.”
Hewlett finished 29-of-50 for 394 yards and two touchdowns, but the stat line hardly told the full story. The junior quarterback was brilliant at times, carving up Tulane’s secondary with explosive throws to Lamar Sweet (in his first game back from injury) and Lyle Dragos, but he also threw two costly interceptions, including an 82-yard pick-six by Xavier Squires late in the third quarter that completely flipped the game.
After controlling much of the first half and leading 17-3 midway through the third quarter following Bragg’s 31-yard field goal, the Bulls suddenly found themselves in a fight.
Tulane quarterback Jershaun Newton sparked the comeback with a 2-yard touchdown pass to Devon Devey, then Squires stepped in front of a Hewlett throw and raced untouched 82 yards to the end zone to tie the game at 17.
The Green Wave seized the lead early in the fourth when Paul Lincoln powered in from a yard out, stunning the home crowd and silencing an offense that had piled up 524 yards on the night.
But Hewlett settled down.
The veteran quarterback answered with a seven-play touchdown drive, capped by a 5-yard strike to Dalton Sahara to tie the game at 24. Later, after USF’s defense forced a stop, George Shembo punched in a 2-yard touchdown run with 1:56 remaining to seemingly put the Bulls in control.
Tulane had one more punch left.
Newton, who completed 14-of-23 passes for 206 yards and two scores, found Ben Wahl down the sideline for a 42-yard touchdown with only 19 seconds left to tie the game at 31. The Green Wave sideline erupted while Raymond James Stadium sat in stunned silence.
That silence didn’t last long.
Starting at their own 25 with just 20 seconds remaining, Hewlett calmly delivered four straight completions. He hit Connor Suggs over the middle, found Sweet near the sideline, found Dragos on an out and then worked the offense into field-goal range with another strike to Dalton Sahara at the 18 yard line before USF called their final timeout with four seconds left.
That left the game in Bragg’s hands.
The sophomore kicker never blinked.
Bragg split the uprights from 35 yards despite Tulane's attempt to ice him.
“He’s got ice in his veins,” Hewlett said of Bragg. “After the way this game swung back and forth, to walk out there and hit that kick like it was routine says everything about him.”
Bragg finished the night a perfect 2-for-2 on field goals and 4-for-4 on extra points, accounting for 10 points in the win.
Tulane had one last chance with two seconds left but the defensive line collapsed the pocket and forced an errant throw from Newton, securing the Bulls win.
USF’s offense once again showcased its explosiveness despite the uneven finish. Connor Suggs ran for 92 yards and a touchdown while also catching five passes for 43 yards. Sweet led the receiving corps with 104 yards, while Dragos added 90 more as the Bulls racked up 394 passing yards.
Defensively, Armon Chambers delivered another standout performance with five tackles, two tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks. Justin Hatch added seven tackles and three tackles for loss as USF repeatedly pressured Newton despite Tulane’s efficient passing numbers.
Tulane, however, proved it belongs in the conference title conversation.
The Green Wave finished with only 296 offensive yards but capitalized on mistakes, played clean football with zero turnovers, and received huge performances from linebacker Matt Farrow and safety Xavier Squires. Farrow piled up 16 tackles and four tackles for loss, while Squires recorded 11 tackles in addition to his momentum-changing interception return touchdown.
After the game, Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall made it clear his team believes this rivalry is far from settled.
“We’ll be back,” Sumrall said. “That’s a championship-caliber football team over there, but we believe we’re one too. If we see them again in the conference championship game, the result’s going to be different.”
Saturday night’s thriller certainly made a rematch feel inevitable.
And if it happens, both teams now know exactly how thin the margin between victory and heartbreak can be.

USF RECRUITING REPORT
BULLS CONTINUE HOT STREAK WITH MORE FOUR-STAR IN-STATE TALENT

USF continued building momentum on the recruiting trail this week, adding two more major in-state commitments with the pledges of Jacksonville safety Hugh Salaam and Hollywood wide receiver Ian Jewel.
The additions give the Bulls even more high-end Florida talent in what is quickly becoming one of the strongest recruiting classes in the American Conference.
Salaam, a four-star hybrid safety from Jacksonville, committed to USF after emerging as one of the fastest defensive backs on the Bulls’ board. The 5’11”, 212-pound defensive back brings elite straight-line speed, physicality, and positional versatility to Tony White’s defense.
USF coaches were especially impressed with Salaam’s athletic profile and ability to cover ground in space. He possesses great speed and acceleration, and strong agility numbers while also showing encouraging tackling ability for a defensive back prospect. His combination of size and movement skills projects well into the Bulls’ aggressive defensive scheme, where coaches believe he can play near the line of scrimmage while still holding up in coverage.
Internally, the Bulls view Salaam as a future impact player capable of contributing early on special teams and eventually growing into a versatile every-down defender in the secondary.
USF also strengthened its offensive skill talent with the commitment of four-star receiver Ian Jewel out of Hollywood.
The 5’10”, 173-pound receiver fits perfectly into the Bulls’ offense as a polished route runner with natural ball skills and explosiveness after the catch. Jewel’s route-running ability immediately stood out during the evaluation process, as the receiver already shows advanced short, medium, and deep route skills for a high school prospect.
Jewel also brings impressive athleticism, including high speed and agility, along with strong hands and excellent body control in contested situations. Coaches believe his ability to separate quickly and create mismatches in space makes him an ideal fit for USF’s offense.
USF’s staff views Jewel as another important addition to a receiving pipeline that has become one of the program’s greatest strengths under DJ Porter.
Landing Salaam and Jewel continues an impressive recruiting run for the Bulls, who now possess multiple Top-100 national prospects while continuing to dominate inside the state of Florida.
