Mustangs go Big Game Hunting, Augustine not fearful of "slow start" to 2032 recruitment class
By Cheryl Smith

DALLAS -- Death, taxes, and the SMU Mustangs having a notoriously slow start to building insane recruiting classes.

Despite spending the last few seasons building one of the strongest programs in college football, the SMU Mustangs have not been bathing in the riches of strong recruitment classes to open the seasons. Mostly due to the fact that they typically are targeting the cream of the crop - their recruitment boards typically just darts thrown at 247Sports Top 100 recruits - the Mustangs have gotten through the first third of this season with not a single commitment.

Typically, this would have a school panicking. Not SMU, though. This is all par for the course. It is not completely unusual for them to go through the first few weeks of the season without a commitment because of the aforementioned reasons. They target star-studded recruits whose commitments shake the landscape of college football entirely. For example, the Mustangs are targeting three of the top ten quarterbacks in the country in Washington's Zach Mixon (1st), Texas' own Morgan Keenan (3rd), and New Jersey's David Ebiketie (5th). After striking out last year on Alex Keyton and J.J. Rattay and having to pivot to current starter Steven Bequette, the Mustangs are going for broke once again.

The team is expected to hear from top-ranked offensive guard Lamar Sills of Macon, MS soon, as the 6-foot-1, 293-pound guard recently announced his top three teams, featuring SMU prominently. Five-star cornerback Devon Story is also preparing to make his decision soon.

The Mustangs have suffered their first loss of the season, seeing four-star outside linebacker Baraka Ogbonna announce his verbal commitment to Texas A&M. The in-state linebacker from Pasadena, Texas, was the sixth-ranked outside linebacker in the country and is expected to be game-changer for the Aggies.
