SMU's Nico Augustine in hot water after comments after Texas A&M game
By Veronica Downs | SMU Daily

DALLAS -- SMU head coach Nico Augustine is facing a significant amount of backlash after comments during the post-game press conference of the Mustangs' 56-28 victory over the Texas A&M, pushing their undefeated record to 6-0.

The Aggies roared to a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter thanks to three passing touchdowns from quarterback Tyrique President before the relentless Mustangs' offense began chewing into a lead that would ultimately give in the second half. The Aggies' offense dried up significantly after President went out with a lower body injury that knocked him out for the remainder of the game. The Mustangs would take advantage of the Aggies having to pivot to backup quarterback, Tyler Wilkins, who would throw three interceptions and fumble the ball, which would be picked up by Mustangs linebacker Craig Marvin and ran back for a touchdown.

When asked by reporters whether Augustine felt as though his team would have won if President hadn't been hurt, Augustine was more blunt than his typically poised self. "I don't know why you guys are asking me such a ridiculous question," he said. "I don't really enjoy answering questions about guys who couldn't even finish the [expletive] game."

Augustine was pressed further by another reporter on whether he had any empathy for the Aggies quarterback going down with an injury and he responded with a scoff. "He didn't have much sympathy when he was talking trash to our sideline when he thought he was going to be on ESPN, knocking off the best team in the country. It wasn't a dirty hit, and you never want to see guys get injured. But, you take a shot at the King, you best not miss."

Pundits and analysts throughout the college football world were less than thrilled to hear about Coach Augustine's comments, regarding the statement as "classless and crude".

"What kind of grown man dances on an injury to a kid?" a college analyst commented. "Regardless of SEC rivalries, or what may have prompted the comments, at some point, you need to remember that you're an adult. You're supposed to be a professional. There's a line, and he crossed it."

Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko was less than thrilled to hear about Augustine's remarks regarding Tyrique President and his injury.

"'Rique is a classy, high-character individual that we're proud to have as our quarterback," he said. "He was dominant against the Mustangs, and we all knew that if he hadn't gone down, we would have pulled everything together and won. And men with such low character like Nico [Augustine] can't stomach that."

"Certain men, when faced with such consistent success, forget the sentiment of humility. They can't handle the burden and turn rotten. And then we're surprised when he's faced with allegation after allegation. Coordinators leaving. Players leaving, and having nothing good to say about their time here."

SMU, Coach Nico Augustine, or any of the players for the Mustangs have yet to respond concerning these remarks made by Aggies coach Elko.

Didn't Coach Lawson tell his quarterback that his girlfriend's miscarriage was a convenience?

Saturday, October 18, 2030 | Gerald J. Ford Stadium (Dallas, TX)

Week 8 Preview: vs #1 Georgia (5-0, 2-0)

Synopsis
The Game of the Year pits the top two teams in the country against one another in #1 Georgia and #2 SMU. Top to bottom, this will be the best team the Mustangs will faceoff against since playing Clemson last season. This is one of the best teams Georgia has fielded in recent years under head coach Kirby Smart, and they are looking better than a semi-final knockout in the College Football Playoffs.

It begins and ends with the quarterback performance of senior T.J. Monty and his absolute cannon of an arm. He may not be getting Heisman acknowledgement quite yet in the early season, but he easily has the best arm in the country. His ability to stretch the field and keep safety play honest is certainly going to push the Mustangs' impressive secondary. SMU typically trots out the combination of Elijah Trewyn at free safety and Taylor Stick at strong safety, but it is entirely possible the team shifts to the speedier Alex Longoria over Stick with Monty's ability to launch the deep ball.

SMU's pass rush has picked up over the last few weeks behind the play of Jameson Beckner and blitz packages bringing Eric Vizcaino and Eli Nall into the fold, which will be necessary against a stout Georgia offensive line, led predominantly by All-American tackle Ryan Devoe. Getting to Monty won't be enough. He can still hit his throws while running. Edge rusher Davon Kamara will be paramount for the Mustangs success.

Another matchup to look out for will be SMU leading wide receiver Kenyon Natson against Moses Newcomb. The cornerback can mirror the best receivers in the game and is expected to be the first corner off the board in the upcoming NFL draft (not if SMU's Cole Crews has anything to say about that). Natson has been SMU's homerun threat all season long, but against the speedy Newcomb? The performance of Eric DeLuca and Mustafa Agude will be huge for SMU to get their offense going.
