Mustangs get their guy in quarterback Mixon, suffer numerous other losses
By Cheryl Smith

DALLAS -- If you recall, SMU is notorious for getting their star quarterbacks later in the cycle.

Alonzo Cheeseman originally committed to TCU before flipping at the last possible second to come and star at SMU (even if the move may have caused some controversy in the form of an NCAA investigation that has yet to be completed). Current quarterback Steven Bequette was a late season target after two other quarterback targets for SMU decided to opt for other schools.

Not this time, as the number one quarterback in the nation in Woodinville High's five-star quarterback Zach Mixon has announced his verbal commitment to SMU, closing up his recruiting process by choosing the Mustangs over Washington, USC, and Wisconsin. Mixon was targeted by the Mustangs along with fellow five-star quarterbacks in Morgan Keenan and David Ebiketie, who opted for USC and Ohio State respectively.

Joining Nixon in Dallas next year the number one runningback in the country is Earl Worthy from Virginia. The Mustangs continue to cycle in top running backs, picking up a top three running back in the position for the third consecutive season after getting Shaq Thomas last year and former running back Avery Knowles and current star Dwayne Sowells two seasons ago. The Pony Express is churning out thoroughbreds once again.

However, the news isn't all good as SMU didn't only lose out on two quarterback targets so far this season. The number one player in the country, safety Alex Teamer, opted to join Glenn Schumann and the Alabama Crimson Tide and the second-ranked prospect, offensive tackle Dominique Nailor, deciding to join Ebiketie at Ohio State. Four top-tier offensive tackle prospects have opted for greener pastures, causing SMU to have to do a late-season pivot to shore up the position.
