The Final Stampede - Is this Nico Augustine's last run with the Mustangs?

DALLAS -- After dropping their first regular season game in the last few seasons, it feels like the writing on the wall is that SMU and their superstar head coach Nico Augustine is rocketing towards a messy divorce.

Despite Augustine having two more years remaining on his five-year contract that he signed just after leading SMU to a National Championship, the last few seasons have proven to be tumultuous in Dallas, with the relationship between the head coach and the Mustangs proving to be more strained than one though;. After the NCAA levied an investigation into the internal affairs of the head coach and his regime, the relationship between Augustine and the executive brass of the team and the university has dissolved into passing jabs and a rumored divide between football ops and the university.

The investigation is reported to be wrapping up at the culmination of this current season, with widespread expectations being that Augustine will be cleared of malpractice. Despite this, the overarching truth is that the former Coordinator of the Year with Arkansas State has resented the university's response to the allegations in the first place, citing that their lack of transparency affected the team's ability to recruit and recoup talent over the last few seasons. The most notable loss was recruiting loss of last year's number one quarterback Alex Keyton, who opted to join Arkansas when he was widely expected to be signing with SMU.

"Whether he's willing to publicly admit it or not, that was the ignition to the dissolving of Nico [Augustine's] relationship with SMU," said an insider close to the situation. "It's one thing to put smut on his jacket - he can handle that - but when it affects the team's ability to win and sustain this winning culture that he's built tirelessly since he got hired years ago - that's what hurt him. They didn't have his back when he needed them."

Now that the team suffered the unprecedented loss to Stanford the other night in overtime, it feels like SMU ship is taking on water at an all time high. Coach Augustine has been fairly non-comital to his ongoing involvement with the team going forward, choosing instead to remain focused on finishing out this season, where the team is fairly locked into a berth in the SEC championship game in their inaugural season in the conference and presumably, a place in the College Football Playoffs.

What comes from Nico Augustine if he were to leave SMU? The presumption is that he would want to remain in the SEC after battling and advocating so vehemently for SMU to get the invite they did last year. But escalating from a team that has been amongst the final four the last three seasons seems like a tough situation for Augustine. After Texas opted to go with Kenny Dillingham over Augustine in the last coaching carousel, it feels as though the remaining blue blood schools won't be looking to upgrade or shakeup their current coaching situations.

A marriage that might be viable could be LSU, as the team has suffered yet another disappointing season under the Josh Heupel regime and may be looking to shake things up. Could we see Augustine usher in a new age of competition down at Death Valley? That remains to be seen.

Until further notice, as Coach Augustine would say himself, he is the coach of SMU and will be looking to finish the season strong in a top-tier matchup against the Oklahoma Sooners.
