Nico Augustine Walks Away from Coaching After Historic SMU Run
By Veronica Downs | ESPN Writer

DALLAS -- College football lost one of its brightest minds Tuesday, at least for now.

Former SMU head coach Nico Augustine announced he is stepping away from coaching, ending weeks of speculation about his future and closing the book on one of the most remarkable five-year runs the sport has seen in recent memory.

The announcement came through a short, carefully prepared statement posted across Augustine’s social media channels, where the 38-year-old coach cited burnout and the emotional toll of the last several years as the reason for his departure.

“The last five years have been the most rewarding of my life,” Augustine wrote. “But they’ve also demanded everything from me. Somewhere along the way - through the pressure, expectations, and constant battles - I realized I lost the spark that made me love coaching in the first place. This isn’t retirement. This is me stepping away so one day I can miss the game again.”

It was an ending few expected.

Just weeks ago, Augustine had parted ways with SMU following the conclusion of the 2031 season, a year that saw the Mustangs go 11-1 in the regular season, capture the SEC Championship in their inaugural season in the conference, and advance to the College Football Playoff before falling to Georgia in the second round.

Even in defeat, the expectation around the sport was simple: Augustine would land somewhere quickly.

For months, his name had been tied heavily to the vacant LSU. Sources around Baton Rouge believed he was the Tigers’ top target after the dismissal of their previous staff under Josh Heupel, but Augustine ultimately declined the offer. LSU would pivot and hire Shane Beamer.

At the same time, league insiders speculated Augustine could make the jump to the NFL, with the Dallas Cowboys viewed as a natural fit given his offensive pedigree and his track record of developing quarterbacks. The team, finally out from under the blanket of former quarterback Dak Prescott's contract has some of the most interesting cap flexibility in the league.

Instead, he chose neither.

In five years at SMU, Augustine transformed the Mustangs from an ascending program into a national juggernaut. He leaves Dallas with a 67-7 record, a national championship, multiple College Football Playoff appearances, conference titles in both the ACC and SEC, and the distinction of building one of the most explosive offenses of the modern era.

His crowning achievement came with the development of Alonzo Cheeseman, the Heisman-winning quarterback who became the face of SMU’s rise and one of the most decorated players in school history.

But Augustine’s tenure wasn’t without turbulence.

The last two seasons in particular were marred by controversy, from NCAA investigations into recruiting and NIL practices to public speculation about internal fractures within the athletic department. While none of the most severe allegations were ever formally substantiated, the constant scrutiny weighed heavily on Augustine and the program.

By the end, those close to the situation said the grind had caught up to him.

Now, SMU turns the page.

The Mustangs have already elevated former offensive coordinator Jeff Traylor to head coach, entrusting him with sustaining the machine Augustine built. Traylor, who helped reshape SMU’s offense into a more balanced power-spread attack in 2031, now inherits one of the most stable and talent-rich rosters in college football.

Still, replacing Augustine won’t be simple.

Because what he built in Dallas wasn’t just a winning program - it was an identity.

He brought swagger. Innovation. Ruthlessness. And above all, belief.

At a school long trying to reclaim its place among the sport’s elite, Augustine didn’t just restore relevance.

He delivered greatness.

Really considered thugging out another season or even moving this onto Madden, but simming and creating a semi-realistic NFL 5 years in before July was just too big of an undertaking.
