With a Ton of Cap Space and a Treasure Chest of Picks, Chargers Prime for Quick Turnaround
Los Angeles general manager Stephon White sounded hopeful during his exit interview with the media on Monday.

He congratulated kicker Michael Badgley for not missing a field goal all season and was effusive in praise for defensive end Joey Bosa in reaching 22.5 sacks, the second most in NFL history. He commended quarterback Rashaud Wheaton's maturity and resolve, along with the entire team.

If you didn't know any better, you'd think the Chargers were a competitive team and not a team that finished with the worst record in the league.

The reasoning for Whites upbeat tone could be resonated with the fact that finishing last in the league might have been exactly what the doctors ordered. They were able to play a lot of young players such as Felix Whittaker and Tyron Pope as opposed to going after some mid level veterans. They traded away starting QB Hal Sams and S Nasir Adderley for two second round picks. They were able to find some draft gems in DT Cedric Darius and WR Jaron Medlock while playing defensive end Vincent Zellner and defensive back Samuel Fleming a ton, with Fleming leading all rookies in snaps played.

The team must now decide what to do at quarterback, especially with the #1 pick now in hand. Oklahoma's Will Castonzo is clearly the best QB in the class but he might not be in the top half of this draft as far as overall talent. Wheaton also showed some flashes so if the Chargers do rebuild that offensive line in a tackle laden draft, do they give him another season?

Project Number One Overall Pick QB Will Castonzo Arrested During Super Bowl Week
Oklahoma quarterback Will Castonzo was arrested for fighting with police outside a nightclub.

Castonzo, the Big 12 Player of the Year, was arrested early Saturday along with senior defensive tackle Will Whitfield, police said Monday.

According to the police report, Whitfield got into an argument outside the club. After police told him to leave, Whitfield stopped in the middle of the street, held up traffic and yelled at another man.

When police finally caught up to Whitfield, he refused to put his hands behind his back when they tried to handcuff him. Castonzo interfered with officers, the report said.

Whitfield was charged with disorderly conduct, and Castonzo was charged with resisting or obstructing without violence.

Following a strong senior season, many projected Castonzo to be the first QB taken in the draft and possibly go number one in the draft to the Los Angeles Chargers. It remains to be seen the impact this has on his draft stock.

Chargers Looking to Extend Pro Bowl S Derwin James, Target CB Ramsey
The Los Angeles Chargers are 'locking in' on extending pro bowl safety Derwin James and sign free agent cornerback Jalen Ramsey as reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter.

According to Schefter's report, a deal is expected to be done as soon as free agency opens with the team having nearly $90 million in cap space. Former Seahawks WR D.K. Metcalf is another name that the Chargers are looking to sign in the early hours of free agency.

The Rams have a pending tampering charge against the Chargers and Ramsey signing this quickly with the Chargers would give credence to their claim that Chargers GM Stephon White met with Ramsey last season.

Dream Team? Chargers Win Opening Hours of Free Agency with Resigning of James, Childs and McKivitz; Signings of Ramsey, Metcalf and Griggs
It only took a few hours -- if that -- but the Los Angeles Chargers have won free agency.

The team announced on their social media that they had re-signed safety Derwin James and defensive end Christian Childs. Within a few minutes, news of Jalen Ramsey's four year deal with the team became official only for the ink on D.K. Metcalf's contract to finish up drying long enough for that announcement.

Childs, just 25, received the biggest deal despite arguably being the smallest name. His deal was for five years, $87.3 million with Ramsey and Metcalf coming in second at four years, $71.8 million. James, meanwhile, reportedly took a hometown discount at four years, $51.8 million to help free up some money for his former college teammate in Ramsey.

The signings at the skill positions overshadowed that the team had also re-signed last year's starting left tackle Colton McKivitz to a two year, $2.54 million extension and signed center Austin Griggs to a three year, $29.9 million deal to replace retired center Travis Frederick.

Chargers release T Tristan Wirfs to free up cap space, bring back kicking unit
The Los Angeles Chargers have released offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs and re-signed kick Michael Badgley and punter Johnny Townsend.

Wirfs, 29, was to make over $8 million this season and releasing him frees up $5 million in cap space.

The team is currently in negotiations with receiver Justin Jefferson in an effort to re-sign him. The Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Rams have also taken interest in Jefferson who almost had a 1,000 yards last season despite shaky quarterback play.

Both Badgley and Townsend signed one-year extensions after both were pro bowlers last season.
