Ruthless Aggression | A WWE Universe

September 2003 | Week 1 | Lousiville KY

Vince McMahon had a major announcement to make following Summerslam and invited the current top superstars on RAW and Smackdown! respectively, Edge and The Rock, to join him in the ring. WWE was going to go back to just having one flagship show, Monday Night RAW. And that meant some titles needed to be unified. The World Heavyweight Championship held by Edge was set to become the primary championship for the show as were the WWE Tag Team Championships owned by American Alpha. Both titles would be getting minor redesigns as well. The WWE Champion, The Rock, and World Tag Team Champions, The Hardy Boyz, would be forced to vacate their titles. They wouldn't be left empty handed though. Both would be elevated to instant #1 contender status and take on their rivals at the next pay-per-view, Backlash. This prompted Edge and The Rock to get right up in each other's faces, realizing that they were just four weeks away from a major clash to see who the true king of WWE is.
Match #1: Hardy Boyz vs. Golden Truth | Tornado Tag
Matt Hardy focused on Goldust while Jeff took on R-Truth in this Tornado Tag match. Matt was able to win his individual matchup with Goldust, leaving him knocked out outside the ring. This allowed him to get back inside and help his brother by hitting a Twist of Fate on R-Truth before Jeff landed a Swanton Bomb on him to pick up the convincing victory. After the match, American Alpha's Chad Gable and Shelton Benjamin came out to the stage with their new look WWE Tag Team Champions around their waist. They motioned to the titles and then stared down the Hardyz as both teams acknowledged they were set to have a tough fight on their hands at Backlash.
► Show Spoiler
Randy Orton came out sporting a brand new, white-strapped Intercontinental Title belt. He didn't take Nakamura lightly and came at him aggressively right out of the gate. A Rope Hanging DDT followed by an RKO looked to have the match one, but Nakamura managed to get his feet on the ropes to break up the pin. It was then his turn to go on the offensive, eventually hitting Randy with the Kinshasa, but the Viper was able to get his limbs to the ropes as well to force a break up. Nakamura got frustrated by this, and that split second of lost focus cost him, as when he returned to attack Orton, the Viper was already coiled, and hit him with an RKO out of nowhere to grab the win.

Each of these four men were competing against each other for a spot as the #1 contender for Rey Mysterio's Cruiserweight Championship. The debuting superstar, Ricochet hit a 450 Splash on Mike Kanellis at the same time as Finn Balor hit the Coup de Grace on Daniel Bryan. Ricochet was quicker to go for the cover though and impressively became the #1 contender on his first night as a WWE superstar.
► Show Spoiler
John Cena came out to the ring looking for his next challenge after regaining the United States Championship at Summerslam. It wasn't long until his call was answered. Mr. Money in the Bank, Big Show, who Cena had several clashes with last year, was eager for a shot at the belt. Cena told him to get to the back of the line though and focus on cashing in that Money in the Bank briefcase if he wants a title shot.

WWE Acquires BCW, moves to Three Brand Format

WWE has acquired the rights to upstart promotion BCW, run by Barron Blade. Several members of the BCW roster were previously released by the WWE, and in addition to their re-signing, a few others will also be joining the company. BCW is currently in the midst of a tournament to crown its inaugural BCW Champion, but those plans have been altered slightly. BCW will play out the semi-finals on its final episode before joining the WWE as a reformed version of ECW, the former popular hardcore wrestling brand. The finals of the BCW championship tournament will be played out on the first episode of ECW on Wednesday Night, with the winner being awarded the ECW Championship. ECW will also be home to the Hardcore Championship, Women's Championship and ECW World Tag Team Championships.
On Monday nights, WCW makes its long awaited return to television under the WWE banner. Monday Nitro will once again rule the start of the week with the World Heavyweight Championship currently held by Edge being restored to its status as the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. The WCW United States, Cruiserweight and World Tag Team Championships will also replace the WWE versions of those belts held by John Cena, Rey Mysterio and... nobody, respectively. On the first episode of Nitro, because Edge was not selected to be part of the WCW roster, he will defend his belt against Steve Austin as the latter attempts to bring it exclusively to his new show, Nitro.
Lastly on Friday Nights, Smackdown! will take place, featuring WWE's flagship championships the WWE Championship, Intercontinental Championship and WWE Tag Team Championships held by The Rock, Randy Orton and the Hardy Boyz. Stephanie McMahon has also reintroduced the WWE Divas Championship and named herself the champion of the newly founded Divas Division on the Smackdown! roster.
One pay-per-view will take place each month, but only two shows will participate in each respective one. Starting with Fall Brawl at the end of September, which will be hosted by the WCW Monday Nitro and ECW Hardcore Television brands.

September 2003 | Week 1 | Memphis, TN

In his company, BCW''s, last ever episode, Barron Blade wasn't interested in letting anyone else steal the show from him. Blade attacked Sun Moon Chen from behind with a kendo stick during his entrance, dirty, but perfectly legal under the Falls Count Anywhere rules. Chen was at a huge disadvantage from the onset because of this and it was all Barron Blade as he continued to abuse Chen with the Kendo Stick before eventually hitting him with a Float Over DDT and then Backbreaker to book his spot in the finals on ECW next Wednesday to challenge for the ECW Championship (renamed from BCW).

Mr. Amazing looked to continue his impressive underdog run in the tournament. After slaying the giant Omos last week, he had another large superstar in front of him in the form of King Shaw. Amazing's strategy of speed and all-out offense seemed to work again, particularly when he hit the King with a Superman Punch. But that only earned him a two count. After that, Shaw got back into things, and caught Amazing out of mid-air on one of his diving attack attempts. Then he slammed him thunderously with a Military Press, knocking out Mr. Amazing and ending his cinderella run in the semi-finals. King Shaw will face Barron Blade in the finals next week.
