UTSA's De'Corian Clark secures a 53 yard TD pass from Cam Fitzpatrick with 1:22 left in the game.

After struggling on offense for much of the game UTSA's freshman QB Cam Fitzpatrick threw a pair of deep touchdown passes in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter to lead the Roadrunners to a 21-16 win over Texas State in the I35 Showdown.

Fitzpatrick, who also threw a touchdown pass in the second quarter, struggled throughout the game due mostly to poor pass protection and dropped passes. The lack of a running game didn't help matters either.

"Cam really stepped up and made plays for us." Head coach Jeff Traylor said after the game. "Didn't have a lot of time in the pocket. Got rid of the ball and didn't take sacks. Got out of there a couple times and probably was our most effective runner even."

Fitzpatrick avoided taking any sacks despite being hurried on nearly half of his 44 pass attempts. He did scramble twice, picking up 20 yards, just one shy of Robert Henry's 21 yards rushing.

Trailing 10-0 late in the second quarter Fitzpatrick connected with Willie McCoy for a six yard touchdown pass to put the Roadrunners on the board.

Texas State led 16-7 when UTSA got the ball back with 2:24 left in the game following a missed field goal by Texas State.

After completing a pass to David Amador II Fitzpatrick found McCoy deep down the left sideline for a 64 yard touchdown.

Following a quick three and out by Texas State Fitzpatrick and the Roadrunner offense took over near midfield. On the second play of the possession Fitzpatrick nearly mirrored the previous touchdown when he connected with Clark for a 53 yard score down the left sideline.

Fitzpatrick went 6 for 8 for 159 yards and two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. He was 21 of 44 for 272 yards and three touchdowns for the game.

"Things just kind of all clicked for at the end there. Had a nice clean pocket and guys made plays downfield." Fitzpatrick said after the win.

UTSA improves to 2-0 with the win. They will travel to Austin to take on Texas next Saturday night.
