Dallas, TX. - While this year’s Red River Rivalry didn’t carry the same top-two billing as last season’s #1 vs. #2 clash, the intensity between Texas and Oklahoma was as fierce as ever. And under the afternoon sun in Dallas, the Longhorns delivered a statement performance, pulling away late for a 41–21 win.

Oklahoma entered with momentum after snapping a four-game losing streak with a stunning upset over then-#2 Georgia. Texas, undefeated and looking to avoid last year’s near-collapse in this very matchup, struck first with a bruising 14-play opening drive capped by a nine-yard touchdown pass from Maurice “Mo” Uwazurike to Santiago DeCastro.

The Longhorns defense set the tone immediately. Linebacker Miguel Giuliano helped shut down Oklahoma’s first possession with back-to-back sacks, and the nation’s leading sack unit finished with five on the day. A field goal midway through the second quarter stretched Texas’ lead to 10–0, while Oklahoma had just one first down.

But the Sooners answered, stringing together an impressive 13-play, 82-yard drive. Relying on a rare balanced approach, freshman quarterback Angel Bryant hit Javon Stacy on a swing pass to cut the deficit to 10–7.

Texas’ lone sore spot this season—Uwazurike’s turnovers—resurfaced just when momentum began to swing. Trying to force a third-down pass between two linebackers, “Mo” was picked off by Oklahoma’s MLB Max Naanee. The Sooners capitalized with an eight-yard touchdown strike to tight end Marshall Murray, taking a sudden 14–10 lead with just 1:18 left in the half.

But “Mo” didn’t flinch. He bounced back immediately, finding DeCastro for a quick eight-yard gain before recognizing a mismatch outside. Uwazurike audibled at the line and lobbed a perfect deep ball to Prince Oluokon, who coasted in for a 72-yard score to reclaim the lead, 17–14.

Then came a bold decision with nine seconds left in the half.

“BBQ chicken,” head coach Nash Savage said with a grin when asked what Uwazurike said to him before heading back out.

Tight end Tyler Biggs torched the safety on a wheel route, and Uwazurike found him for a 59-yard touchdown. Texas entered halftime up 24–14—just as they had in last year’s showdown.

Unlike last season, though, there would be no Sooner comeback.

Texas smothered Oklahoma’s first second-half possession, then punched in a five-yard score by Alex McDonald to extend the lead to 31–14. A field goal by Edward Jaimes pushed it to 34–14, seemingly putting the game out of reach.

But Uwazurike couldn’t resist hunting the kill shot—and he got burned. A deep post intended for Miguel Jerman was intercepted by Carl Tarvas, setting up a spark of life for the Sooners. Rashaad Fanene capitalized with a 48-yard touchdown, slicing the lead to 34–21 and stirring echoes of last year’s near-miracle comeback.

This time, though, Uwazurike slammed the door.

On the next drive, “Mo” delivered his fourth touchdown of the afternoon—again to Biggs, who split the safeties and strutted into the end zone, flashing the Horns as he crossed the goal line.

“We talked all week about not getting in our own way,” said offensive coordinator Colt McCoy. “Mo made a couple mistakes, but he does what he always does—keeps his head and makes the plays to win it.”

Despite the continued absence of star RB Lee Vela—who still leads the country in rushing yards—Texas’ ground game hummed along. Earl Petty racked up 159 yards on 24 carries. Uwazurike finished with 369 passing yards, four touchdowns, and completions to six different receivers. Biggs led the way with 125 yards and two scores, while Oluokon and Jerman combined for 170 yards and a touchdown.

For Oklahoma, the loss all but ends their SEC title and playoff hopes. Now 2–5 overall and 1–3 in SEC play, it’s a down year—but there’s optimism for the future.

“There’s still football left in Norman,” said Kirk Herbstreit during the broadcast. “But their playoff chances are gone. That said, Angel Bryant’s got star potential. If this is the worst he ever looks, the rest of the country better be on alert.”

In the Big Ten, Ball State avoided a scare in Iowa City, edging the Hawkeyes 24–21 behind a last-minute touchdown pass from Manny Livings to freshman Karlos Farris. The Cardinals remain unbeaten in conference play as they rebound from their Week 1 loss to Georgia.

Texas Lands Prized Cornerback William Montez

Image

Austin, TX. - He may not be a perfect schematic fit, but that didn’t stop the Texas Longhorns from landing the biggest prize of the 2037 recruiting cycle: #1 overall prospect William Montez.

The 6’3” cornerback from Las Vegas committed to Texas over the weekend, choosing the Longhorns over USC and San Jose State despite questions about how his zone-heavy skillset aligns with HC Nash Savage and DC Quincey Lincoln’s aggressive, man-coverage-based defense.

“I trust the coaching staff to put me in a position to make plays,” Montez said when asked about the fit. “It’s not about one style—it’s about development and opportunity.”

Savage, never one to pass on a chance to joke, had a quick response when pressed on Montez’s role: “Defensive tackle.”

Scheme fit or not, Montez will be joining a defense with no shortage of front-seven firepower after Texas also secured a commitment from 5-star linebacker Tyree Winbush—the #4 overall player in the country—from Rio Rancho, New Mexico.

“All Emilio’s done since he got there is talk about the culture, the community, and the consistency of the staff,” Winbush said, referencing current Texas freshman and former top recruit Emilio Delgado, who attended the same high school as Winbush. “That only got stronger during my visit, especially watching how the team handled the Oklahoma game. I can’t wait to make my own mark in the Red River Showdown next year.”

Lost in the spotlight of the two top-five commitments were a pair of important additions for depth and development: 4-star linebacker Robert Kouandjio and 3-star athlete Dominick Draughn also announced their pledges to the Longhorns.

Kouandjio adds speed and versatility to an already loaded defense. Draughn, meanwhile, is a wildcard. A high school quarterback from Friendswood, Texas, most scouts believe he lacks the arm strength to play under center in college. But his elite athleticism has many wondering where Savage sees him fitting in.

“Savage doesn’t make signings like this without a plan,” said one rival analyst. “He’s always got a gadget guy or two in the class. Sometimes they hit, sometimes they don’t. But you better believe he sees something.”

That sentiment echoes the rise of Karlos Farris at Ball State—a 5-star athlete who was projected to be a quarterback but is now one of the most electric weapons in college football under Kadin Semonza’s up-tempo attack. As a true freshman, Farris ranks top five nationally in receptions, yards, and touchdowns.

Savage himself has found success in retooling athletic quarterbacks before—most notably Timmy Vernon, a former Syracuse QB who became a two-time Doak Walker Award winner and Heisman runner-up as a hybrid WR/HB. Vernon’s final season featured over 100 receptions, 1,000 receiving yards, 500 rushing yards, and 30 total touchdowns.

If Draughn can carve out even half the impact Vernon or Farris have had, Texas may have just landed the ultimate steal—proof once again that in Savage’s system, raw tools can be just as valuable as stars.

Texas HC Nash Savage Joins "The Pat McAfee Show"

Pat McAfee: Ladies and gentlemen, joining us today is the man, the myth, the damn Nitro legend himself — Coach Nash Savage! Coach, how the hell are ya!? We haven’t had you on solo since the Syracuse days — what gives, huh?

Nash Savage: Always good to be here, Pat. And hey — that intro never misses. You’re right, it’s been a minute. I was on last year with Kadin before the Orange Bowl, but yeah, it’s been a while one-on-one. Honestly, that first season at Georgia, I was locked in. Year two, after some brutal losses to Florida, I felt like I had to grind harder — play it straight. But trying to “fit in” isn’t who I am. That mindset led to the move to Texas. Now we’re back to doing it the old-fashioned way — loose, confident, with swagger… and most importantly, we’re back to winning.

McAfee: I mean, even with that rough Orange Bowl loss to Ball State, it’s been a hell of a turnaround. You went 9-0 to start last year, and even with three losses in your last six to close it out, it was the best Texas has looked in a long time. Now you’re sitting at 6-0 again — do you think you’ve shut the door on the doubters?

Savage: Let’s just say that SEC Championship loss to Georgia didn’t exactly help quiet the critics, Pat.

McAfee: [laughs] I wasn’t gonna twist the knife, Coach, but yeah… the boo birds were out heavy after that one. Is there a little rivalry brewing between you and the Georgia faithful?

Savage: Not from my end. Despite how it’s spun, I’ve got nothing but respect for Athens and the Georgia program. I just wasn’t in the right headspace when I was there — that’s on me. But listen, Georgia fans are passionate as hell. If I gotta take a little heat to take pressure off my players and keep them focused? I’ll be the villain. No problem.

McAfee: You heard it here first, folks — Coach Savage ain’t duckin’ NO smoke, especially if it’s coming from barking Bulldog fans.

Now let’s talk about this offense. You said in the offseason the Nitro offense was coming back, and so far? Whew. Mo’s been cookin’. He’s also leading the nation in both touchdowns and interceptions. Is that something you’ve gotta rein in? Or are you looking at the bigger picture?

Savage: It’s all about context, Pat. If it’s a deep shot with five seconds left in the half? That’s a calculated risk. But if we’re trying to protect a lead or shift momentum, that’s where we’ve gotta be smarter — as a team. Mo’s responded well when we’ve needed him most. But as we gear up for the postseason push, we’ve gotta recognize when a punt is better than a turnover. That’s not just on Mo or Colt — that’s on me too. I’m aggressive by nature. Sometimes we all need to check ourselves.

McAfee: Speaking of Colt — Colt McCoy is in year two as your OC, and despite losing guys like Sharga and Pettis, this offense hasn’t missed a beat. You’ve had great success with former QBs on your staff — cough Kadin Semonza cough — is Colt built from the same cloth?

Savage: Colt’s got a unique perspective. He was a top recruit, a record-setter at Texas, even if folks held the lack of a title over his head. Then he found success as both a starter and a reliable backup in the league — and that requires a deep understanding of the game. Coaching was a natural fit. He’s sharp, he’s detailed, and he’s a hell of a motivator. If he gets a shot at running his own program someday? I won’t be surprised if he hits the ground running.

McAfee: Alright Coach, gotta hit you with some recruiting talk. You guys are on fire — landing the No. 1 overall recruit William Montez. But folks are saying he might not fit your man-heavy scheme?

Savage: That’s still to be determined, Pat. On paper, maybe he’s not your prototypical man corner. But we’re not in the business of wasting talent. Just look at Jayden Singleton — he moved from corner to safety and is having a great year. Montez is a baller. If he makes plays, we’ll find a spot. That was our message to him all year, and it stuck.

And if you look back at my recruiting history, it’s not just talk. I’ve always stocked the linebacker and secondary rooms with top talent — and we’ve never had a player transfer out. The expectation is simple: you make plays, we’ll put you in the right position to keep making them.

McAfee: Alright… last question, and this one ain’t from me. This dude “Soapy” has @’d me all week and even called the show, made me promise to ask you this. His words, not mine…
Where’s the pigment in the secondary, loc?
Savage: [laughs] Oh, man… here we go. It’s the return of the white corner! Cooper DeJean opened the door, and we’re just keepin’ the train rollin’.

And Soap, if you’re listening — Emilio Samuel is Latino, my man. So there goes that theory.

McAfee: [laughing] You heard it here first! Coach Savage is revolutionizing the DB room one ethnically ambiguous lockdown corner at a time!

Savage: Alright Pat, let’s wrap this before you get canceled.

McAfee: Probably a good call, Coach. Appreciate you — and here’s hoping we get Savage vs. Semonza: Part Two come playoff time!
