Maine State University finalizes 2024 recruiting class by adding seven transfers

Portland, Maine —
As the calendar turns toward the inaugural season on the field, Maine State University has quietly completed one of the most important steps in building its football program: finalizing a 2024 recruiting class that will not play a down this fall, but may ultimately define the Majestic Pines’ future.

The group, made up of high school signees and a handful of strategic transfers, will spend the next two seasons practicing, learning the system, and developing physically before becoming eligible to compete in 2026. It’s a long-term investment, one that head coach Rob Tierney and his staff believe will pay dividends when the program takes its next step.

“This group didn’t sign up for instant gratification,” Tierney said. “They signed up to build something.”

The bulk of the class comes from the high school ranks, with 15 players enrolling knowing they would spend a full year developing without game reps. That kind of commitment isn’t common in modern recruiting, and it wasn’t accidental.

“This was about identifying players who understood the vision,” Tierney said. “Guys willing to practice, lift, and compete every day without seeing the field right away.”

That group includes players across every position group, quarterback Tavion Reese, running backs Jamari Dixon and Andre Wallace, wideouts Tobias Westbrook and DeShawn Kelly, and a defensive core highlighted by linemen Tyler Branch, Erick Talbert, and Donte Willis. Several of those players already project physically closer to upperclassmen than true freshmen, giving the staff confidence that the redshirt year will accelerate, not stall, their development.

Alongside the high school signees, Maine State added key transfer pieces to anchor the locker room and raise the program’s baseline.

Former UMass left tackle Marquis Dalton brings FBS experience to a young offensive line, while Isaiah Copeland arrives from Rhode Island with multiple seasons of FCS game action in the secondary. On special teams, long snapper Cole Schmidt (Plymouth State) and kicker Cole Armstrong (Virginia Union) provide immediate reliability, a priority for a staff focused on winning the margins early.

Bridgton Academy products Xavier Delmar and Beau Landry add polish and maturity on the offensive side, while Malcolm Clay, another Virginia Union transfer, bolsters the interior defensive line with size and strength.

“These guys understand college football,” Tierney said. “They’ve been through camps, depth charts, adversity. That matters when you’re setting standards.”

By design, none of these players will see game action until 2026. Instead, they’ll spend the year immersed in the strength program, the playbook, and the culture Tierney and his staff are establishing from day one.

For Maine State, that patience is part of the plan.

“We’re not chasing shortcuts,” Tierney said. “We’re building layers. When these guys take the field in 2026, they won’t feel new. They’ll feel ready.”

As the Majestic Pines prepare for their first season under the lights, this redshirt class represents something less visible, but arguably more important than any single game result. It’s proof that Maine State isn’t just starting a team.

They’re building a program.

Majestic Pines Close Out Productive 2025 Training Season as Foundations Take Shape

Portland, Maine —
While the spotlight will shine elsewhere this fall, the most important work in Maine State football history has already been taking place quietly behind closed gates.

The Majestic Pines wrapped up their first full training season this week, completing a grueling 2023 developmental year that head coach Rob Tierney has repeatedly described as “the real beginning.” Though Maine State will not take the field until 2026, the progress made over the past several months has laid a tangible foundation for what’s to come.

“This year was about habits,” Tierney said. “You can install plays later. You can add talent later. You can’t fake work.”

Redshirt Class Shows Rapid Growth
The core of that work came from the program’s inaugural redshirt group, players who committed knowing they would practice throughout 2023 without seeing game action until next season. That decision has already begun to pay off.

Quarterback Tavion Reese has emerged as a steady presence in the film room, improving his footwork and timing while adjusting to the speed of college defenses. Running backs Jamari Dixon and Andre Wallace added noticeable strength, with Dixon becoming a consistent pass-protection option and Wallace flashing downhill burst during controlled scrimmage periods.

On the perimeter, wide receivers Tobias Westbrook and DeShawn Kelly showed significant improvement in route discipline and release technique, while tight end Beau Landry has grown into a reliable blocker capable of holding the edge against older defenders.

Defensively, the most striking gains came in the trenches. Defensive linemen Tyler Branch, Erick Talbert, and Donte Willis each added size without sacrificing mobility, giving Tierney confidence that the front will be physically ready for competition in 2024. Linebackers Marcus Talley, Reggie Polk, and Corey Langford showed early command of the defensive system, with Polk in particular earning praise for his sideline-to-sideline range.

“These guys look like college players now,” said defensive coordinator Marcus “Tank” Holley. “That wasn’t always the case in March.”

Fitzpatrick Stadium Renovations Continue
While the roster has taken shape on the practice field, visible progress has continued at Fitzpatrick Stadium.

Construction crews completed structural upgrades to the grandstand this summer, with expanded seating, improved sightlines, and modernized concourses now in place. Locker room renovations are nearing completion, including upgraded training spaces, meeting rooms, and a dedicated nutrition area for players.

University officials confirmed that additional aesthetic upgrades and expanded press accommodations are scheduled to be finalized ahead of the 2024 home opener.

“This stadium has history,” said athletic director Marc Kurto. “Our job is to respect it while preparing it for the future.”

Early 2026 Matchups Locked In
As infrastructure and development continue, Maine State has begun shaping its inaugural 2026 schedule, with several marquee matchups already finalized.

The Majestic Pines will host Delaware, providing an early measuring stick against one of the most consistent programs in the FCS ranks. A road trip to Montana State is also locked in, giving Maine State a chance to experience one of the most demanding environments in college football.

Perhaps most anticipated is the in-state showdown with the University of Maine, a matchup that instantly carries weight beyond records or classifications. University officials expect strong attendance and statewide interest for the program’s first taste of an in-state rivalry.

“These games matter,” Tierney said. “They’re not placeholders. They’re statements.”

Momentum Building on the Recruiting Trail
Behind the scenes, attention has already shifted toward the 2025 recruiting class, and early returns suggest it may surpass expectations.

The staff has focused heavily on regional talent, junior college depth, and select transfer targets who can contribute immediately while maintaining roster balance. Several early verbal commitments are already in place, with additional visits scheduled throughout the fall.

“We’re selling honesty,” Tierney said. “Come here, work, develop, and you’ll have an opportunity.”

For a program still months away from its first kickoff, Maine State is already moving with the rhythm of a seasoned operation. The wins will come later. For now, the Majestic Pines are doing exactly what they set out to do.

They’re building something real.
