Los Angeles Lakers sign center Deandre Ayton
The Los Angeles Lakers have signed center Deandre Ayton.
Ayton (7’0”, 252) appeared in 40 games (all starts) for the Portland Trail Blazers in 2024-25, averaging 14.4 points, 10.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.0 blocks in 30.2 minutes. The 26-year-old has played in 398 career NBA games (391 starts) across seven seasons with Portland (2023-25) and the Phoenix Suns (2018-23), averaging 16.4 points on 59.0 percent shooting from the field and 75.5 percent from the foul line to go with 10.5 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.0 blocks in 30.8 minutes. Ayton is one of four players to average at least 10 points and 10 rebounds in each of the past seven seasons, along with Giannis Antetokounmpo, Rudy Gobert and Nikola Vučević.
“Acquiring a starting-caliber center was the top priority for us this offseason, and we believe Deandre is an amazing solution to that objective and is an ideal player to add to our current core,” Lakers President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Rob Pelinka said. “DeAndre’s size, mobility and athleticism will allow both paint scoring and paint protection. Deandre’s playoff experience as a starter on an NBA Finals team also aligns well with our ultimate Lakers championship aspirations.”'
In three trips to the NBA Playoffs (2021-23), Ayton has appeared in 45 games (all starts) and averaged 15.9 points, 10.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 33.7 minutes. Ayton played a key role leading Phoenix to the 2021 NBA Finals and remains the only player in league history to average at least 15 points while shooting 60 percent or better in postseason play.
Born in Nassau, Bahamas, Ayton was selected with the first overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft by Phoenix and went on to earn NBA All-Rookie First Team honors. Collegiately, he played one season at the University of Arizona (2017-18), where he was named Pac-12 Player of the Year and earned consensus First Team All-America honors.
Ayton will wear jersey No. 5 for the Purple and Gold.

“Jake is a very high IQ two-way player with the ideal skills for a JJ Redick basketball system,” Lakers President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Rob Pelinka said. “He’s a feisty and disruptive defender who uses his size and physicality to create turnovers. Offensively, he can score at all three levels and has a knack for creating space for himself and his teammates. Being just 23 year old, we think Jake has significant basketball upside, which will be honed nicely in our Lakers basketball development program.”
Born in Pasadena, Calif., LaRavia was selected 19th overall in the 2022 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves before having his draft rights traded to Memphis. Collegiately, he spent one season at Wake Forest (2021-22) following two campaigns at Indiana State (2019-21).
LaRavia will wear jersey No. 12 for the Purple and Gold.
