While Coastal Continues To Roll On the Field; Tensions Continue To Rise Behind the Scenes

Conway, SC. - The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers are rolling in their title defense, sitting at a perfect 9–0 entering their late Week 10 bye. But while everything looks pristine between the lines, seven straight wins by 20 or more since their 20–10 nail-biter against Clemson; things appear to be unraveling quickly behind the scenes in Conway.

Although no official statement has been released, multiple sources indicate that the relationship between head coach Kade Vaughn and newly appointed athletic director Mike Buddie is deteriorating fast. The tension reportedly began after Coastal’s 79–6 dismantling of Georgia Tech, when Buddie issued Vaughn an undisclosed fine for “conduct unbecoming of an Atlantic Coast Conference head coach.” The letter accompanying the fine was described as strongly worded, instructing Vaughn to “begin playing nice with his contemporaries” and reminding him that, while they compete on the field, ACC programs remain partners in building the conference brand.

Vaughn’s response was pure defiance. He pre-wrote a check for triple the original fine and had it sent first class to Buddie’s home, timed to arrive the morning of Coastal’s Week 8 showdown with Wake Forest. The Chanticleers then proceeded to thrash the Demon Deacons 65–20, keeping their starters in for the entire contest.

Buddie’s follow-up was equally emphatic: another fine; double the amount of the check Vaughn sent, and a private meeting with Buddie and university president James Winebreak. According to sources, Vaughn was standoffish during the meeting, openly questioning Buddie’s motives in front of Winebreak. Vaughn reportedly accused Buddie of using his expiring contract as leverage, framing the disciplinary actions as a message to “play ball, or be replaced.”

Earlier in the season, Vaughn had attempted to bypass Buddie altogether, approaching Coastal’s senior leadership directly to discuss a long-term extension. Vaughn, sources said, wanted to negotiate midseason to prevent contract speculation from becoming a distraction during another potential championship run. Leadership instead informed Buddie of the meeting and reaffirmed that only he would oversee negotiations. On his timeline.

Following that meeting, Vaughn and the Chanticleers responded in their trademark fashion: by hanging 66 points on LSU in Death Valley. His postgame remarks didn’t do much to cool tensions either.

“No one can accuse us of running up the score now,” Vaughn quipped, after playing true freshman quarterback Anthony Prude for the entire fourth quarter to give last year’s No. 1 QB recruit live reps.

With Coastal entering their bye week, the drama has momentarily subsided, but not for long. Buddie has reportedly issued Vaughn an ultimatum ahead of the Chanticleers’ highly anticipated Week 11 return to Hard Rock Stadium, home of the Miami Hurricanes.

It was in that same stadium last season that Vaughn and Miami head coach Mario Cristobal engaged in a now-infamous pregame and postgame feud, capped by Vaughn wearing a replica of the Hurricanes’ Turnover Chain to midfield after Coastal’s 45–13 win — sparking a heated confrontation that required coaches and officials to intervene. That incident ultimately led to an ACC-issued fine and, sources believe, played a key role in former AD Chance Miller’s reassignment, paving the way for Buddie’s hiring.

“Coastal wants to look and feel like a legitimate ACC institution,” one insider said. “That includes professionalism from the top down. They didn’t think Chance was enforcing that, so Buddie was brought in to clean it up.”

Now, the two figures steering the most polarizing program in college football are at another crossroads. According to multiple reports, Buddie’s latest directive to Vaughn was simple:

“The turnover chain stays home. Or you do.”

Miami, FL. - Last year’s meeting between Kade Vaughn and Mario Cristobal needed no introduction; their back and forth jabs in the media and a postgame midfield scuffle after Coastal’s dominant win made sure of that. So when No. 3 Coastal Carolina and No. 5 Miami squared off again this season, no extra motivation was necessary. Both teams knew exactly what was at stake. Miami’s social team had been teasing the rematch all year, ending each victory post with a single phrase: “Expect us.”

The game lived up to every bit of the hype. Both sides traded blows through a tense, high-level first half that ended in a 14–14 deadlock after Miami quarterback Alfonso Kamara completed 16 of 17 passes, capped by a dart to Ben Ellington to set up a Lorenzo Harris touchdown before the break.

“You get the feeling whoever forces the first turnover is going to win this game,” predicted Kirk Herbstreit on the ESPN broadcast. Coastal took that as a challenge and then made good on it.

After both teams opened the second half with touchdowns, Coastal finally broke the cycle. Fredrick Meredith hit Tyler Hagg on a 43-yard post to make it 28–21, and on the ensuing Hurricanes drive, free safety Keke Allotey jumped a Kamara post route intended for Ellington to grab the first turnover of the night. On the very next play, reserve running back Fredrick McCallum sliced through the Hurricanes defense for a 79-yard touchdown, blowing the game open.

Miami answered immediately with a 79-yard strike from Kamara to Ellington, part of an electric 289-yard, two-touchdown night for the sophomore, but Coastal refused to blink. On the ensuing possession, the Chanticleers milked more than six minutes off the fourth quarter clock before Cornell Jennings found the end zone for his fourth touchdown, extending the lead to 42–28 with just over two minutes remaining.

The Hurricanes mounted one last push. Kamara connected again with Ellington on a 90-yard bomb, setting up Harris’ second score to close within a touchdown. A failed onside kick gave Coastal the ball back, but Miami’s defense forced a 4th-and-6 near midfield; setting up a crucial decision for Vaughn.

Rather than punt or try a long field goal, Vaughn put his trust in his veteran quarterback. Meredith, now 40–1 as a starter, rewarded that faith by finding Tavares Tinker on a 36-yard go route against press coverage, sealing the win and silencing Hard Rock Stadium. Kamara’s desperation heave on the next drive was intercepted, ending Miami’s hopes for revenge.

After the game, Vaughn and Cristobal exchanged a brief, businesslike handshake; a far cry from last year’s theatrics. Reports had surfaced earlier in the week that Coastal AD Mike Buddie personally instructed Vaughn to “play nice” and leave the infamous turnover chain in Conway. Vaughn complied, though a sea of roughly 5,000 visiting Chanticleer fans filled the visitors’ section wearing replica teal turnover chains featuring the school’s mascot in place of Miami’s “U.”

When asked if he had any part in that, Vaughn smirked. “I can’t say I know anything about that. I followed the rule. Heck, I even gave my own replica to Mike before we boarded the plane,” he said before leaving the podium.

The 49–35 victory locked up Coastal’s return to the ACC Championship Game, improving to 7–0 in conference play. Miami, meanwhile, now trails Syracuse in the standings — but with a trip to the JMA Dome looming, their showdown next week has turned into a “winner-goes-to-Charlotte” matchup.

Jennings continued his historic Heisman campaign, rushing for 192 yards and four touchdowns, his seventh straight multi-score game. He now holds both the ACC and Coastal Carolina single-season rushing touchdown records with 29 and counting.

Next up, Coastal travels to face Pittsburgh in their final conference contest before returning home for Senior Night against archrival Liberty.

Jennings continued to build an impressive Heisman resume with 192 yards amid his 7th straight game with multiple touchdowns.

Ben Ellington was a one man wrecking crew for the Canes, hauling in 11 receptions for 298 yards and a pair of scores.

While Miami was able to push the ball deep, they still were stifled for 7 sacks by the Teal Wall that took their toll on QB Alfonso Kamara.
