NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Miami Gardens, Florida - History was never going to remember how pretty it looked. It will remember who was left standing.

On a night when sheets of rain turned Hard Rock Stadium into a swamp and every snap felt like it could decide the national championship, No. 5 USF abandoned the explosive offensive identity that carried it through much of the 2029 season and instead won with patience, discipline and an overwhelming display of complementary football. Behind sustained offensive drives, a suffocating defensive effort and one final statement from a battered Connor Suggs, the Bulls defeated No. 3 Oregon 20-10 on Monday night to capture the first national championship in school history.

As the final seconds ticked away and Joshua Brantley plunged into the end zone with three seconds remaining, the celebration that followed represented far more than one remarkable season.

It marked the completion of one of college football's fastest and most improbable rebuilds.

Just a few years ago, DJ Porter arrived in Tampa with little national fanfare. Now, after an astonishing rise that saw USF transform from an ambitious program into the sport's ultimate champion, Porter stood on the podium holding the national championship trophy while green-and-gold confetti covered the soaked field.

"This wasn't the kind of game we've played very often this year," Porter said afterward, smiling through rainwater dripping from the brim of his cap. "The weather took a lot away from both offenses. You had to protect the football, you had to trust your defense, and you had to be willing to win ugly. Our guys embraced that. They never complained about the conditions. They just found a way."

The conditions bordered on a monsoon for much of the evening.

Passing windows disappeared behind curtains of rain. Footing became increasingly treacherous with every possession. Long completions were replaced by methodical marches and field position battles. For perhaps the first time all season, the Bulls had to win a championship with patience rather than fireworks.

No player embodied that mindset better than senior quarterback Locklan Hewlett.

Hewlett never forced the ball despite the weather and Oregon's disciplined secondary. Instead, he calmly took what the defense surrendered, delivering one accurate throw after another while directing long, clock-draining possessions that slowly exhausted one of the nation's most talented defenses.

The veteran finished 22-of-27 for 216 yards without a touchdown, but the stat line hardly captured his influence.

Nearly every throw extended drives. Nearly every decision was the correct one.

His precision allowed USF to convert 9-of-14 third downs and both fourth-down attempts while possessing the football for well over twice as long as Oregon.

Against one of the country's most explosive offenses, that was the game.

Every minute the Bulls held the football was another minute Jamie Bail and the Ducks watched from the sideline.

"They're so explosive," Porter said. "You don't beat a team like Oregon by giving them extra possessions. Locklan was unbelievable tonight. Maybe it won't be remembered as one of his biggest statistical games, but I thought it was one of the smartest games he's ever played."

The defense took care of everything else.

Oregon entered the championship averaging well over 40 points per game and fresh off dominant postseason victories over Duke and Miami.

USF reduced that attack to almost nothing.

The Ducks managed just 174 total yards and only nine first downs. Bail completed eight of his ten passes, but those completions produced only 81 passing yards as the Bulls refused to surrender anything downfield. Oregon reached the end zone only once, a five-yard touchdown pass to Tyree Dozier midway through the fourth quarter after spending most of the night searching unsuccessfully for rhythm.

Safeties Tracy Bennett and Jathan Hatch repeatedly cleaned up underneath routes, while the front consistently collapsed the pocket without allowing Oregon's running game to establish any consistency. Greg DeMorat's sack halted one promising drive, and Hatch finished with six tackles and three tackles for loss in one of the finest performances of his career.

The Ducks' longest offensive surge came only after trailing 13-3 entering the fourth quarter. Even then, USF never blinked. The Bulls simply went back to work.

No one worked harder than Connor Suggs. The junior tailback clearly wasn't himself. Every carry seemed to end with him slowly climbing off the turf, laboring back toward the huddle while favoring his lower body after absorbing another hit. His trademark burst rarely appeared, and he averaged only three yards per carry against Oregon's physical front.

Yet no statistic measured what Suggs meant Monday night. He kept taking the football. He kept lowering his shoulder. He kept finding difficult yards.

And with the championship hanging in the balance after Oregon cut the deficit to three points, Suggs delivered perhaps the two most important runs in USF football history.

Inside the final two minutes, he ripped off consecutive chunk gains that allowed the Bulls to bleed nearly the remainder of the clock before Brantley's quarterback sneak finally ended Oregon's hopes.

Those runs won't stand out on a box score. They may become part of program folklore.

"Connor was hurting," Porter admitted. "Everybody could see it. But he kept telling us he wanted the football. That's who he is. Toughness isn't always about breaking an eighty-yard run. Sometimes it's carrying the ball when every step hurts and helping your team finish a championship."

George Shembo opened the scoring with a one-yard touchdown plunge late in the first quarter before Dom Bragg added field goals from 26 and 34 yards to build a 13-3 advantage.

After Oregon answered with its lone touchdown early in the fourth quarter, Hewlett calmly orchestrated one final drive that consumed precious time before Suggs' punishing late runs set up Brantley's championship-clinching score with three seconds remaining. It was fitting. The Bulls didn't need a spectacular finish. They simply suffocated the game.

As Porter accepted congratulations from coaches across the field and embraced members of his staff one by one, his postgame comments carried an unmistakably reflective tone.

"I've been blessed to coach incredible young men," Porter said. "This locker room is special because of the people inside it. Our assistant coaches pour everything they have into these players every single day, and these players believed in something bigger than themselves. They trusted each other from the beginning."

He paused before continuing.

"I couldn't be more proud of what this group has accomplished. However long people remember this season, I hope they remember the kind of teammates these guys were and the kind of people our coaches are. They've made this one of the great experiences of my life."

He never hinted that Monday night might represent the end of anything. He didn't need to. The emotion in his voice suggested he understood just how rare seasons like this truly are. For one unforgettable night in South Florida, the rain washed away every storyline except one. The Bulls climbed college football's highest mountain.

And at the center of it all stood DJ Porter, a coach whose meteoric rise culminated in delivering the first national championship in USF history.

USF POSTGAME REPORT
#5 USF 20 – #3 Oregon 10
Image

Offense
–USF captured the first national championship in school history with a gritty 20-10 victory over Oregon in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.
–Despite torrential rain and near-monsoon conditions, the Bulls controlled the game by sustaining long drives and dominating time of possession.
–USF finished with 324 offensive yards and 21 first downs while running 60 plays compared to just 28 for Oregon.
–Locklan Hewlett delivered another masterful performance, completing 22-of-27 passes for 216 yards without a turnover while consistently taking what the defense allowed.
–Connor Suggs battled through an apparent injury, carrying 19 times for 57 hard-earned yards while adding four receptions for 52 yards.
–Suggs helped seal the championship with consecutive physical runs inside the final two minutes that allowed the Bulls to run nearly the remainder of the clock.
–Lyle Dragos led all receivers with nine catches for 86 yards while Suggs, Lamar Sweet and Gerald Camarda all played key roles in extending drives.
–USF converted 9-of-14 third downs, both fourth-down attempts and scored on all four red zone opportunities.
–The Bulls never punted, controlling possession from start to finish against one of the nation's most explosive defenses.
That wasn't the game we've played most of the year, but championship football isn't always pretty. We stayed patient, protected the football and trusted each other to make the next play,” Head Coach DJ Porter said.
Defense
–Tony White's defense delivered perhaps its finest performance of the season, holding Oregon to just 10 points and only 174 total yards.
–The Ducks managed just nine first downs while running only 28 offensive plays all night.
–Oregon completed just 8-of-10 passes for only 81 yards as the Bulls eliminated explosive plays through the air.
–The Ducks were held without a touchdown until a fourth-quarter touchdown after trailing 13-3 entering the final period.

–Armon Chambers added five tackles and Greg DeMorat contributed a sack in another dominant defensive effort.
–USF held one of college football's highest-scoring offenses well below its season averages while allowing only one touchdown.
That's one of the best offensive football teams in the country. To hold them under 200 yards and only 81 through the air says everything about our preparation and our players. Tony White and that defensive staff were unbelievable tonight,” Porter said.
Special Teams
–Dom Bragg connected on field goals from 26 and 34 yards while converting both extra-point attempts. He narrowly missed a 46 yard attempt before halftime.
–Bragg accounted for eight points and provided critical scoring in a defensive battle where every possession mattered.
–Elton York averaged 17.0 yards on two kickoff returns and added a 10-yard punt return.
–USF committed zero turnovers, zero penalties and never punted throughout the championship game.
–The Bulls won the field-position battle despite challenging weather conditions.
Quotables
Sometimes you have to win a game that doesn't look anything like the games you've won all season. Tonight was about toughness, discipline and believing in each other. That's exactly what these players did,” – DJ Porter

Connor was hurting, but he kept asking for the football. Those last couple runs might not show up as highlights, but they won us a national championship,” – DJ Porter

I've been fortunate to coach an incredible group of players and work alongside an unbelievable staff. I'll always be grateful for what they've poured into this program. This team will always be special,” – DJ Porter
News
–USF finishes the season 16-1 and wins the first national championship in school history.

that natty was intense!
i said it in the article but playing a close game with a team with dudes all over the offense really made it feel like one slip up was going to be the ball game for them
we held on
Suggs was on life support from wear and tear on game 17, we were the only team in the nation to play 17 games. in hindsight i should have subbed him out more in big wins but he got the hardware and we gt the team hardware so alls well that ends well
appreciate your support all season
