Bobcats put an exclamation point on spring with a few surprise standouts at the Showcase

SAN MARCOS — Texas State's Spring Showcase is in the books, and while Brad Jackson's continued rapport with a retooled receiver room remained the headline story of the spring, a handful of lesser-known names left Saturday having made their case for a bigger role in the fall.

Here are some players who left an impression at the Showcase.

QBs Austin Carlisle, Gavin Parkhurst

Carlisle doesn't have to worry about unseating Jackson for the job but he made sure everyone remembered what he can do with the ball in his hands, scoring twice on Saturday, including a 12-yard scramble on the opening drive where he made a linebacker miss in the hole.

"You see it live and it hits different than it does on tape," offensive coordinator Jaleel Mosley said. "He's got juice. We're still figuring out exactly how much of that we want to unlock, but the ability is real."

With Jackson getting a lighter workload in the showcase, it was redshirt sophomore Gavin Parkhurst who turned in arguably the best throwing performance of the day, connecting with Lakeyleon Graves on a 22-yard back-shoulder touchdown down the sideline and finishing over 100 yards through the air.

"Gavin's had a really good camp," Mosley said. "His accuracy has taken a jump, and you saw it Saturday with that back-shoulder ball to Lakeyleon was a veteran throw. That's usually when you start to see a guy trust what he's seeing instead of just reacting."

The receiver room appeared mostly settled entering the spring, with transfers Wayne Harris, Ardell Banks and Jamaal Jordan penciled in at the three starting spots. But a pair of unheralded names made it clear the competition isn't over.

Dameon Crowe, all of 5-foot-6 and 164 pounds, turned a simple bubble screen into a 41-yard touchdown on Saturday, making two defenders miss in the open field before outrunning the secondary to the pylon.

"He's a problem in space," receivers coach DeShawn Ridley said. He changes direction like it's nothing. You saw it Saturday, we've been seeing it all spring. Just really an electric guy with the ball in his hand,"

Lakeyleon Graves, a 6-foot-2, 204-pound redshirt freshman who spent last year as an afterthought after taking a redshirt, capped his strong spring with that touchdown catch from Parkhurst. He doesn't have the track record of a veteran like Banks, a redshirt senior who caught 22 passes at Kent State a year ago and added a contested touchdown grab of his own Saturday to close out the scoring, but the tools have coaches taking notice.

"Lakeyleon's a guy that's got some juice to him too," Ridley said. "He's not there yet in terms of consistency, but the flashes are real, and this is a results league. If he keeps flashing, he's going to find a role."

LB Jordan Sample

Redshirt senior linebacker Jordan Sample has been one of the more consistent standouts of the spring, particularly in coverage, and he capped it off Saturday with the day's lone interception, which set up a short offensive touchdown on the ensuing possession.

DT Jonathan Davis

Redshirt freshman defensive tackle Jonathan Davis, a well-built 6-foot-5, 312-pounder, anchored the defensive line throughout the Showcase, collecting a pair of tackles for loss and consistently collapsing the pocket from the interior as the Bobcats look to replace significant departures up front.

"He's got a good get-off for a guy his size, and he can really convert speed to power," defensive line coach Bill Teerlinck said.

i was already offered an HC job according to the game. I don't plan on taking a HC job anytime soon as that wouldn't be realistic. in addition to the house rules, also using Ol' Claude to help me decide what are realistic jumps based on the offers
