Kennesaw State Owls football didn't upset top-fifteen ranked Indiana,
they simply whooped them

The Kennesaw State Owls took a knee on the Indiana Hoosiers' one-yard line with two minutes left in the game. It was the defining moment on a night where the Kennesaw State Owls announced themselves to the college football world as them taking mercy on formerly ranked top-fifteen Indiana spoke more volumes than any garbage time could have.

There was no crazy finish like Appalachian State's upset of Michigan two decades ago or trick plays like when Boise State took down Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl later that year. Kennesaw State, on the whole, was the better team from the second quarter on after settling in following a 72-yard touchdown by the Hoosiers on their second play from scrimmage.

"I think guys are starting to get an understanding of the expectations," Owls head coach Bubba Mack, in his third season at the helm, said after the game, "When you have guys like Kam [Davis] or Jaxon [Howard] that have played at the highest level of the sport and they come in and they're bringing in a different mentality, a pro's mentality, it raises the standard of everyone in the room."

In the last two seasons, the Owls have brought in over forty players from the portal under Mack such as the aforementioned Davis and Howard, both one-year 'rentals' that will be looking to make their candidacy for the NFL as seniors this year. The exciting aspect for Owls fans is not only will their success this season potentially attract future former Power 4 transfers to come to KSU, they're also getting impact plays from players with eligibility remaining. Redshirt sophomore Skyler Williams threw two touchdown passes and running backs Greg Burrell and Jamarice Wilder rushed for 112 and 65 yards respectfully, all with two years of eligibility remaining. Mack called safety Tevin Cameron, a redshirt freshman, the best player on the field that night.

In his third year, the team is starting to take on the identity of their head coach, a former NFL offensive lineman. The Owls had more rushing plays (58) than the Hoosiers had rushing yards (46) to the tune of 278 rushing yards and edging the Hoosiers in first downs (25 to 12), converted 44 percent of their third downs and had the ball for nearly an entire quarter more than the Hoosiers in the time of possession battle.

They did all this with arguably their best player in Davis nursing a leg injury that Mack says the team is monitoring but expects to be "full go" for the Conference USA opener against Delaware next weekend.

‣ Granger showed promising signs in the loss to Penn State, throwing for 177 yards and a touchdown but at this point in his development, there are accuracy and consistency concerns. He completed forty-six percent of his passes against the Nittany Lions and while he'll see a decline in talent when they host KSU this week, the Owls should be able to disrupt his timing and make him have to make some magic happen on his own.

WR Denzel Hodges (R-Fr) | 6′4", 199lbs | 79 OVR, 87 SPD, 90 ACC, 91 CTH
‣ Hodges might end up being one of the breakout stars of this season after having a solid debut in the season opener with eight catches for ninety seven yards but was held to just a single catch against Penn State. He should be an interesting matchup this week for KSU's top corners who had been really good this season.

‣ Ali is one of the better corners in the conference and one of the better ones the Owls will see this year. The Owls have improved the receiver room this year with the addition of Cam'ron Lacy and Corri Milliner. The Blue Hens have some solid safeties but will likely shift their attention towards aiding their other corners, leaving Ali on an island. It'll be interesting to see if the Owls challenge Ali or look for better matchups elsewhere.
