BRANDON WILSON SCORES ON A PICK SIX FOR LOUISIANA
“We've got to take care of the football. Period. You're going to lose more often than not if you consistently give the ball away that much.” Louisiana head coach Porter Davis said following the Cajuns narrow win over Louisiana-Monroe in which quarterback Jordan McAlary once again threw four interceptions, including a pick six.

Both offenses struggled in the first quarter, putting up just three points each. Jeffrey Yatkowski hit a 28 yard field goal for the Ragin' Cajuns and Cedric Bailey connected from 25 yards out for the Warhawks.

After another Yatkowski field goal in the second quarter the game's first touchdown was scored when ULL linebacker Brandon Wilson picked off a Chris Montgomery pass and took it 785 yards to the house, giving the home team a 13-3 lead with just under four minutes left in the first half.

Louisiana-Monroe scored their first touchdown of the game on the ensuing possession with Montgomery connecting with runningback Troy Smith for a six yard score. A Yatkowski field goal at the end of the half made it 16-10 Louisiana-Lafayette at the break.

The lone score of the third quarter came on a 92 yard pick six by Louisiana-Monroe CB Jonathan Tyler. It was one of two interceptions that McAlary threw on deep sideline passes intended for receiver Mikey Porter Sr.

“Maybe just trying to a bit too much, trying to give Mikey a chance to make a play and making a bad decision there. Got to be better.” McAlary answered when asked about those two plays specifically.

McAlary was picked off in the endzone early in the the fourth quarter which was otherwise quiet until late when Louisiana-Lafayette put together a long drive and capped it with a short touchdown run by fullback Ryheem Beach their two point conversion made it 24-17 Cajuns with just a few minutes left to play.

Confusion on coverage assignments by the Cajuns defense led to a quick, easy Louisiana-Monroe score about 30 seconds later when Montgomery found a wide open Nick McClain for an 83 yard score, tying things up with 2:29 left in the game.

McAlary threw his fourth pick of the game, setting up a makeable field goal for ULM but Bailey's miss kept ULL's hopes alive.

McAlary was surgical on the ensuing drive, leading the offense down the field and setting up a game winning four yard touchdown run by Joeseph Hollins III with ten seconds left to play that gave Louisiana-Lafayette a 31-24 win over rivals Louisiana-Monroe.

Courtney Miggins sacked Montgomery on the first play and ULM stopped the clock with one second left. Montgomery threw a prayer into a crowd and the Cajuns secondary was there to knock it down.

“Jordan delivered when it mattered the most.” Offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield said when asked if there was any discussion on making a change at quarterback. “We'll work on those reads that led to the picks and we'll all try to learn from it and get better.”

McAlary has thrown eight interceptions in the last two games.

Louisiana will have a week off before hosting Connecticut in their American Conference opener.

MIKEY PORTER JR OUTRUNS A UCONN DEFENDER EN ROUTE TO A 71 YARD TD
Louisiana opened their American Conference schedule yesterday, hosting a winless Connecticut team that was better than their record would indicate.

Once again turnovers were an issue for the Cajuns with McAlary tossing a trio of interceptions that allowed UConn to keep the game closer than it should have been. A lost fumble brought Louisiana’s turnover total to four.

“I’ve talked about it seems like 1,000 times.” Coach Porter Davis said when asked about the turnovers.” It’s gonna bite us in the *** at some point. It did against LSU. We’ve got to figure it out.”

Davis was also asked about making a change at quarterback. “Jordan is our quarterback.” He replied curtly before refusing to answer further questions.

Louisiana led 21-14 at halftime with scores coming on a six yard McAlary to Darren Guerrero pass in the first quarter, a 71 yard catch and run by Mikey Porter Sr. and McAlary’s first rushing touchdown, a one yard run with 11 seconds left in the first half.

UConn’s first half scores came via a four yard run by Ryan Finley and a five yard pass by Tim Boyle to Robert Rice.

Louisiana scored the only points of the third quarter when D’Eriq Robinette, who took snaps at QB, ran for an 11 yard score on a red option keeper.

McAlary’s five yard TD pass to Porter Sr. early in the fourth quarter gave the Cajuns a 35-14 lead.

A little over a minute later Boyle and Rice connected again, this time for a 13 yard score. McAlary answered with a 15 yard TD toss to Guerrero. It took UConn 74 seconds to answer with Boyle connecting with Ron Rogers for a ten yard score that made it 42-28 Louisiana with 44 seconds left. Troy McCollum botched the onside kick recovery and UConn recovered.

McCollum fully redeemed himself a few second later by interception Boyle in the endzone as time expired. Instead of kneeling in the endzone McCollum returned it and after making a UConn player miss near the goalline he was off for a 107 yard pick six. The score broke the NCAA record set previously by ULL’s Trevance Patt in 2014.

“I knew it was close to over but I saw an opportunity to make a play and we’re told not to let any of those go so that’s what I did.”

“Great play, the right play there. I loved it. No problem with it.” Davis said when asked if he would have preferred a kneel by McCollum to end the game. “They called a timeout with one second left so apparently they still wanted to play more football so Troy did.”

Louisiana’s Jordan McAlary finished with 374 yards and four scores on 29/42 passing with three interceptions. He also had the rushing touchdown. Things were much more productive on the ground for Louisiana with a number of runners combining for a season best 104 yards and two scores.

Louisiana will travel to Cincinnati next week.
