Doeren tabbed as next USF DC to keep run of success going
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer
The South Florida Bulls have hired head coach Dave Doeren to be their defensive coordinator following Mike MacIntyre's hire at Indiana.
Doeren was the head coach at NC State since 2013 before being fired following a four win season. The Wolfpack won twelve games in 2013 and eleven in 2016 but haven't won more than eight games since and have had a losing record four times since that Peach Bowl victory in 2016.
Doeren was last a coordinator in 2010 with Wisconsin and has typically implemented a 3-3-5 defense. Under MacIntyre, the Bulls ran a 3-4 front after being a primarily 4-3 defense under the last three defensive coordinators.

Heisman winner Henry declares for draft along with Peterson, Smith and13 seniors
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer
One of the greatest players to ever put on the green and gold officially called it quits.
Heisman winner and USF career leader in all rushing stats Troy Henry declared for the NFL draft, as expected. The Alabama product rushed for over 4,000 yards and had nearly sixty total touchdowns during his three-year career with the Bulls, rushing for at least 1,000 yards in each season and doubling that as a junior.
Henry did not play in the bowl game and neither did safety Sam Peterson in the second half who also declared for the draft.
USF also lost three-year starter offensive lineman Brian Smith. They will return, however, the rest of their offensive line.

USF OC Doc Holliday announces retirement; Francois to return as play caller
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles
USF offensive coordinator Doc Holliday announced his retirement on Tuesday as the Bulls play-caller after spending the past three seasons in that role.
Holliday took over the offensive coordinator job in 2020 following a 2019 season that saw three different coaches in Justin Fuente, Marcel Smith and ultimately head coach Malcolm Francois call plays for the offense.
Francois is expected to resume his play-calling duties for the 2023 season, at least until a long-term replacement is found.
In the three seasons, Holliday coached two Heisman finalists in Michael Harrell and Troy Henry with Henry winning the award.

Can Francois, Bulls hang on to top recruiting class following NSD?
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider
Heading into National Signing Day week, USF has the top recruiting class in the country. Can they keep that status once the dust has been settled?
Unlike last February where there were really no big fish left on the board for the Bulls, there are two this time around in cornerback Sid Robinson and Corey Johnson. Both in-state four star prospects, USF is considered the favorite to land both recruits but will be battling it out with some other marquee programs for their services. Robinson's larger frame has attracted some Big 10 schools in Pittsburgh and Penn State while Johnson is also considering Indiana and Michigan.
The Bulls have had varying success with recruiting defensive backs in their home state and have surprisingly had to rely on out of state players like Dan Johnson (Georgia), Trey Davis (Texas) and Jason Garcia (Georgia).
Landing those two players alone won't remediate their lack of success in the state at the position but it will help change the narrative and in recruiting, that's key.
USF is also in play for three-star receiver Steve Townsend and kicker Kevin Justice.

Bulls slide in recruiting rankings but go fo' fo' fo' on National Signing Day
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider
USF might have finished second in the rankings but they'll take it.
All four prospects on the board signed with the Bulls with CB Sid Robinson being the first one to send his NLI to the Bulls early in the morning over Pennsylvania schools Pitt and Penn State. The next to come in was three-star Texas receiver Steve Townsend and then the ball got rolling with 4-tar CB Corey Johnson and kicker Kevin Justice.
Four-star athlete Troy Bell ultimately did have the Bulls hat on the table after not including them in his top two schools. Bell signed with Temple,
The Bulls entered National Signing Day with the top recruiting class but with Michigan having one more four-star, they got the nod. USF finished one stop over Texas and was one of just four schools to sign three five-star recruits along with Michigan, USC and Texas.
UCF finished 36th.

‣ QB competition thins out as Thomas enters transfer portal
The most talented arm, according to some, in the quarterback room has exited stage left.
Georgia native Jeremy Thomas (85 ovr, 69 spd, 84 thp, 89 tha), who graduated this past spring, has entered the transfer portal and will play out his final two seasons of eligibility elsewhere as a grad transfer.
The six-foot-one, 246 pound has had to deal with weight issues and has struggled at times on the field, throwing seven interceptions in limited playing time. With Malcolm Francois back as OC and play caller, Thomas lacks the athleticism needed to play in the offense that Francois had previously ran with Michael Harrell.
Being a graduate transfer, Thomas will be eligible to play immediately. Georgia State is the front runner to land his services.
‣ Bulls shaking up the offensive line to find the perfect combination
Despite returning four of it's starters from last season, don't expect the Bulls offensive line to look the same as last season. Former Georgia Tech offensive lineman Bernard Livingston (79 ovr, 92 acc, 82 pbk, 88 rbk) has been running with the first team in place of junior Brad Jones (72 ovr, 83 acc, 84 pbk, 80 rbk) who started twelve games last season and there have been some movement as far as positions.
Left tackle Frank Lucas (80 ovr, 95 acc, 75 pbk, 93 rbk) has played some guard. Charles Joseph (69 ovr, 83 acc, 73 pbk, 85 rbk) has also been in the rotation during practices at both left and right tackle and his stock has risen the most since spring practices among the offensive linemen.
‣ Defense quickly adjusting to Doeren, 3-3-5 defense
Four seasons, four different defensive coordinators.
The Bulls defense has gone from a base 4-3 defense with Pete Retskis to a more nickel approach under Manny Diaz to an aggressive zone blitzing scheme out of the 4-3 under Brent Venables to a 3-4 front with Mike MacIntyre.
Dave Doeren will be the sixth defensive coordinator in as many years when he calls his first play in the fall. Doeren is implementing a 3-3-5 defense which has some odd man front principles that will carry over from MacIntyre's 3-4 defense and some cover schemes with five defensive backs that Diaz also used. The early feedback has been one of optimism from the players, especially the defensive ends.
Stephen Hill has converted from a stand up pass rusher to a defensive end and he's enjoying it.
"I like getting after the quarterbacks and making plays on the other side of the field," says Hill, who has 29 career tackles for loss, "A little bit less thinking for me as defensive end in this scheme and I can just ball."
Outside linebacker Derrick Farris has also seen his roster listing go from linebacker to defensive end. Farris came to USF as a defensive end before being moved in Mac's scheme.

Andrew Lake -- 247 Sports Staff Writer
‣ LB Nate Clark dismissed from program amid armed robbery charges
USF linebacker Nate Clark (74 ovr, 87 spd, 90 acc, 78 tkl) has been dismissed from the program according to an official statement from USF head coach Malcolm Francois.
In the statement, Francois did not go into details on why Clark was released but that he simply "did not live up to the standards of being a USF Bull" and violated team rules. The statement came just a week after Clark was arrested in Temple Terrace, Florida on early Saturday morning.
According to the police report, Clark and two others robbed six people at gun point in at an apartment complex. The report alleges that Clark and the two other identified suspects were at a party Friday night, left and returned with each individual carrying a firearm. According to one witness, Clark was "the leader of the bunch" and demanded that they gave him their wallets and jewelry.
Clark was released on bond Monday morning.
A fifth-year senior, Clark led the team with 92 tackles last season and was an All-American in his first season as a starter. After opting to return for his senior season, it doesn't seem that Clark will be playing football any time soon.
‣ WR Stone to be more involved in offense as a runner
William Stone (86 ovr, 96 spd, 93 acc, 75 cth, 73 car) was one of the top running backs in high school but his performance at 7-on-7 camps led recruiting services to list him as an athlete. The Bulls coaching staff also saw him as more of a receiver and as a true freshman, he broke school records with 1158 receiving yards and had sixteen touchdowns.
His numbers dipped in 2022 due to the shaky QB situation, catching just 52 passes and two touchdowns. In 2023, it doesn't matter whose at quarterback, Malcolm Francois is going to get him the ball.
"Sometimes the flow of a game can take a receiver out of it," says Francois, "We want to get [Stone] the ball at least ten times a game and you can't guarantee that with him at receiver. He has the skillset to be a ball carrier, come out of the backfield and with Troy [Henry] not here anymore, we can certainly use his speed."
‣ Gross, Hughes and Lott running with the first team defense
With a new defense being implemented, everyone is sort of on the same level playing field and it can serve as an equalizer for freshmen when their upperclassmen counterparts are also learning a new defense.
Five-star linebacker Travis Hughes (79 ovr, 84 spd, 98 acc, 75 tkl) and four-star linebacker Dallas Gross (79 ovr, 80 spd, 82 acc, 84 tkl) have been rotating with sophomore linebacker John Reed (75 ovr, 80 spd, 77 acc, 84 tkl) and redshirt junior Montrell Jennings (77 ovr, 84 spd, 92 acc, 77 tkl) as the two linebackers besides Nate Clark.
With Clark's legal troubles, the door is now even wider for Gross or Hughes -- perhaps even both -- to get on the field as true freshman.
Safety Jake Lott, on the other hand, hasn't just been rotating as a starter, he's been the starter. Lott (80 ovr, 90 spd, 89 acc, 84 mcv, 82 zcv, 75 tkl) has taken the bulk of the first team rep at free safety with Malcolm Francois Jr. (64 ovr, 91 spd, 88 acc, 74 zcv, 50 tkl) serving as his backup. Four-star cornerback Corey Johnson (72 ovr, 93 spd, 91 acc, 59 tkl) has also played some free safety for the Bulls in Dave Doeren's defense which deploys a lone single high safety quite often.
Lott has been one of the biggest surprises since his arrival after many assumed that Francois Jr. would be the starter given his performance at the bowl game.
‣ QB Shaw, WR Burns and Bright latest to enter transfer portal
Redshirt junior QB Eugene Shaw and wide receivers Brandon Burns and Benji Bright are the newest names in the transfer portal.
Shaw (80 ovr, 57 spd, 86 thp, 85 tha) and Burns (85 ovr, 86 spd, 99 acc, 80 cth) will immediately be eligible to play as they both graduated this past summer while Bright is only a junior and will need to sit out for a season.
Bright (79 ovr, 91 spd, 83 acc, 81 cth) has played the most out of the bunch, using his 6'6" frame to catch four touchdowns passes as a true freshman. He saw his playing time reduced last season with the arrival of Joel Bass, a similar big body receiver. Bright caught just three passes last season compared to 29 and was likely going to be a backup receiver once more behind Bass who is a sophomore.
For Burns, this is likely the right decision as he's caught just seven passes as a Bull after making the switch from defensive back to receiver as a sophomore. The California native is likely headed back west.
Shaw's departure leaves the Bulls with just three scholarship quarterbacks.
