Bulls ranked 27th in AP CFB preseason polls
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

The preseason polls are out and after winning twelve games last season, the South Florida Bulls are nowhere to be found in the top 25.

The Bulls finished 27th behind teams like UCF and UCLA despite soundly beating the Bruins last season and having a much better season than the Golden Knights albeit losing the head-to-head matchup.

The rationale is likely due to the fact that the Bulls were so dependent last season on Troy Henry and that their quarterback situation isn't much better. They also lost some firepower on defense and both their coordinators.

ESPN also picked UCF to win the South and Oklahoma to win the North. The Golden Knights, who haven't won a conference title since 2010, are the only ranked Big 12 teams.

Can Bulls Survive Early Season Gauntlet?
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

It won't take long for fans of the USF Bulls to find out just how good they are going to be this season.

The Bulls face three top ten opponents in their first give games and have a road trip to unranked Oklahoma which could turn out to be a tougher matchup than on paper. USF opens the season on the road against #10 USC before hosting games against Iowa and #3 Notre Dame and then back on the road for a tough two week stretch of at Oklahoma and at #7 Alabama.

USC is coming off an eleven win season that culminated with a Rose Bowl victory over preseason #1 Michigan. Against Iowa, they'll face off against one of the country's top running back tandems and cornerback Sonny Underwood. Underwood is an elite cornerback with eight career interceptions that was once a USF target on the recruiting trail. Oklahoma is replacing a lot of talent on offense but have some of the best corners in the Big 12 in Chad Bell and James Anderson.

Notre Dame is also undergoing a youth movement as they reload but with five-star quarterback John Daniels, they're a tough team and those around the country believe that as well with their high preseason ranking.

And then there's Alabama. Philip Griffin has had to wait his turn but many believe him to be among the best quarterbacks in the country and Neil Griffin is a tank at 262 pounds and running the way he does. He rushed for 952 yards last season but could be among the leading rushers by this season's end.

2023 USF Schedule
Sep. 2 at #10 USC
Sep. 9 vs. Iowa
Sep. 16 vs. #3 Notre Dame
Sep. 18 at Oklahoma
Sep. 30 at #7 Alabama
Oct. 2 vs. Oklahoma State
Oct. 21 at Texas Tech
Oct. 28 at Baylor
Nov. 4 vs. TCU
Nov. 11 at West Virginia
Nov. 18 vs. Texas
Nov. 24 vs. #23 UCF

Bulls Lose a 28-20 Heartbreaker to USC Trojans
USC couldn't have asked for a better start, forcing a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and returning it for a touchdown to start the game.

USF would roar back, eventually taking the lead but ultimately the game ended on another turnover as the Trojans hung out to beat the Bulls 28-20 to open their season.

Philip Bates was able to beat Jason Garcia and get behind the defense for a 27-yard touchdown to give the Trojans the 28-17 lead with 3:45 left in the game. It would turn out to be the final touchdown of the game and the game winner.

The Bulls did strike back, scoring on a field goal to make it an eight point game heading into the fourth quarter. The Trojans had another good drive going when Melvin Burke was intercepted at the one-yard line by Ray Hill. USF managed to get the football out of their endzone but failed to score.

USF's defense gave them the ball once more but on the 38-yard line, James Pittman threw his second interception of the day to seal the Bulls fate.
