Bulls land rising senior WR Wagner out of Miami; will they keep loading at the position?
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider
Four-star wide receiver Ryan Wagner out of Northwestern High School in Miami, Florida has committed to the USF Bulls.
Wagner, a six-foot-three receiver, transferred to Northwestern after being an overlooked prospect out of Coral Springs for his senior season. An impressive summer in the camp and 7v7 circuit saw Wagner grab that elusive fourth star and he's backed it up with his play this season.
The Bulls were one of the few to jump in on this top 160 player and it's unsure why. Wagner is a legitimate six-three receiver with verified sub 4.33 time at the forty. He's somewhat raw as a receiver, having only caught twenty five passes in his high school career but he has a ton of long touchdowns on gadget plays and jet sweeps.
USF doesn't appear to be done at the position. They're still the favorite to land five-star receiver Darius Downs and Texas' James Harper is also another likely commit. Downs is too talented to turn down and Harper, at six-foot-five, brings the team something they lost in Benj Bright's transfer which is a big body receiver. With now two receivers signed in the class and potentially two more on the way, nearly 1/3rd or at worst 1/4th of the class might end up being receivers.

Tampa is Buzzing Following a 45-31 Win over West Virginia
Don't look now but there just might be a quarterback controversy brewing in Tampa, again.
Mike McFarland replaced the injured Jason Pittman and threw for four touchdowns as USF was able to pull away from West Virginia and leave Morgantown with a 45-31 victory.
Pittman left the game in the first drive with a back injury, hampering the Bulls running game which allowed West Virginia to enter the second half with a 24-21 lead. The Mountaineers scored on their first drive of the second half to make it 31-21 but wouldn't score for the rest of the game.
Returner Malcolm Francois Jr., the son of Bulls head coach Malcolm Francois, returned a kick and a punt for a touchdown, including a 67-yarder in the fourth quarter which helped turn the tide and the momentum.
After a stop by the Bulls defense, Joel Bass was able to get behind the defense for a 44-yard bomb.

Five-star WR Darius Downs commits to USF; gives Bulls two five-star WRs in one class
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider
The last time USF had two five star receivers in one class, it was Andrew Vincent and William Stone. If Jason Barbour and Darius Downs end up being a similar tandem, the folks in Temple Terrace won't mind it at all.
Downs committed to USF over the weekend, giving them their 12th commitment of the class, their third wide receiver and their second five-star. Downs isn't as highly touted as Barbour, who is both the number two player in the class and at his position according to 247. Downs is the fifth ranked receiver and the eleventh ranked player and while he isn't as fast or explosive, he's a bit bigger at six-foot-four and 215 pounds.
Florida State and Miami made a late push for Downs but it wasn't enough as he remained solid with the Bulls.
USF's receiving corps could look very different next season if both Stone and Vincent, as expected, declare for the draft. Shane Peterson and Steve Townsend have shown flashes as true freshman but both weigh under 185 pounds and are not the physical athletes that Downs and Barbour are. Outside of Joel Bass, they might be the most physical ready receivers on the roster by next spring.
USF did strike out on tight end Tony Hurst who committed to Oregon. The Bulls had been trying to get the west coast tight end to come visit Tampa but that never materialized. With Auburn and Florida making a late run at five-star tight end Vincent Everett, striking out on Hurst could loom large. It's too late in the process to really look at other options as there simply aren't a ton of available players at the position. Spots are also going to be tight in this class and the Bulls wouldn't want to spend a spot just to spend it.

Former Bulls and Falcons' QB Harrell: 'I would have won the Heisman in this offense'
Johnny Murray -- The Tampa Bay Times Sports Columnist
Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Harrell was an electric player in college, throwing for over 6,000 yards and rushing for nearly 3,000 while at USF in Doc Holiday's offense. The Bulls single-season passing touchdown leader feels there was some meat left on the bone however.
"I would have thrown for 4,000 yards in that offense," Harrell says, "We had a good offense with Doc [Holiday], Troy [Henry] and [William Stone and Andrew Vincent] but the scheme they're running now? I would have won the Heisman in this offense."
USF has one of the best offenses in the country, the best when it comes to total offense. The difference between the current offense and the one Harrell ran is the balance. Even at his apex, Harrell never threw for more than 3,000 yards in a season and instead almost had three 1,000-yard rushers, an impressive feat in of itself. The Bulls offense is currently ranked fourth in passing offense and 27th in rushing offense. James Pittman, once considered a limited passer that would never work at the P5 level, has thrown for 2,182 yards. Mike McFarland, in just a few appearances, had thrown for 733 with five touchdowns and no interceptions.
Part of it has been injuries at running back but another has been head coach Malcolm Francois being more comfortable in his second time around as a play caller. He's prioritized getting the ball in the hands of his playmakers in Stone and Vincent as well as the Bass cousins, Erik and Joel.
Francois picking up the play calling duties was seen as a stop gap due to Holiday's late retirement into the coaching cycle. If the Bulls finish the season strong, extend their home-game winning streak to 29 and end their season with a few hardware, will Francois' new found role become a more permanent one?
