Wells, Bulls zeroing on Armwood quarterback Antonio Whitehead
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

With just two scholarship quarterbacks on its roster, USF is one injury away from being in a tough situation and two injuries away from being in dire straits. Needless to say, the Bulls cannot afford to swing and miss in this cycle when t comes to the quarterback position and they've identified their man.

Elite 11 quarterbacks Antonio Whitehead (Tampa, Florida) and Ryan Cooper (Mesquite, TX) have been the top two quarterbacks that the Bulls have been linked to but in a recent interview, Cooper did not mention USF as one of the schools that's been contacting him the most, listing Ole Miss, Iowa, Tennessee and Wisconsin. This may come to a surprise as it was widely reported that Cooper tried to verbally commit to the Bulls last year during Junior Day but the coaching staff advised him otherwise.

In speaking to those within the program, the consensus is that local Armwood quarterback Antonio Whitehead has been tabbed as the guy to land in the class for the Bulls. Both quarterbacks have similar playing style with their ability to make things happen with their arm and their legs but Whitehead is shorter and stockier.

Whitehead is teammates with fellow top 55 recruit and receiver Paul Wilson. USF is considered the leader for both of their recruitments with Georgia Tech and Clemson also on the prowl.

As expected, Bulls QB White named starter heading into fall camp
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

After losing the starting quarterback battle with eventual third round pick Nick Williams last fall, sophomore quarterback Jed White has been named the South Florida Bulls starting quarterback.

White, who rushed for eleven touchdowns last season, won the job over redshirt sophomore Jay Jackson who rushed for 86 yards last season, often lining up at running back in packages with White.

Head coach Malcolm Francois announced the decision on the first day of media availability for fall practices. Francois was complimentary of both White and Jackson, noting White's experience as one of the decisive factors.

"[White] has played a bit of football at this level," Francois said, "There's a ton of factors that you have to take into account and with our schedule and how we start the season, we felt like that was the best decision for our football team."

Jackson did not attempt a pass last season while White did, completing 21 of 31 passes for 223 yards and four touchdowns with one interception. The Bulls tough schedule as an Independent did not afford White a ton of opportunities to get extended playing time. When Williams left the Miami game with injury, White had his most extensive performance, throwing for 107 yards and 3 touchdowns but threw a costly interception that ended the game.

The biggest questions facing the Bulls as they head into fall camp
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

With Notre Dame in just a few weeks, the South Florida Bulls will have the chance to respond to critics of their number three ranking. After an Orange Bowl victory last season, the Bulls saw a ton of talent depart for the draft with several big questions all over their team. Here are the biggest ones:

  1. Can Diaz replace The Bermuda Triangle?
When you have as dominant of a linebacker trio as Travis Hughes, Dallas Gross and John Reed, it can sometimes be a disservice as the gap between them and the rest of the linebackers on your roster limits the opportunities to find out what exactly you have at the position outside of those three.

Hughes and Gross are in the NFL now and Reed graduated, leaving new defensive coordinator Manny Diaz with three huge question marks in the middle of its defense. In Diaz's 4-3 defense compared to Dave Doeren's 3-3-5, there isn't as much pressure on the three linebackers but nevertheless, answers will need to be provided.

Redshirt senior Matt Collins is a near lock at Sam due to his size and speed at 242 pounds and good length at six-foot-five. At Mike, it's a three-man race between juniors Danny Love and Dan Miller along with true freshman Marcus Rhoden. Rhoden didn't get on campus until the summer and was already going to be behind the ball as a true freshman but his late arrival does damper his chances. While Love wasn't the five-star recruit that Rhoden was, he was pretty highly touted himself and fans have been waiting to see the Tampa product take the field on a regular basis.

At Will linebacker, it's a couple of athletic freaks in seniors Alex Miller and Calvin Franz. Miller started in the bowl game when Hughes sat out and while he's not Hughes, he's pretty close in terms of athleticism. It remains to be seen if he can put it together and start having Hughes-like production.
    -
  2. Another shuffle along the offensive line, will this one work?
USF's offensive line wasn't bad last season, perhaps even an improvement from 2024 from a pass blocking standpoint but they struggled to find any consistencies in the ground game. David Fuller's yard per carry nearly dipped a full-yard while Green, despite posting career best numbers, saw his drop half a point as well.

Darryl Williams has swung from left tackle to right tackle, finally giving redshirt senior Tanner Patton his shot at left tackle. Patton started in the bowl game at right guard, replacing Chris Simpson and looked dominant in the run game. They're pairing him with another road grader in Bobby Davis on the left side, a former four-star that is in his fourth year in the program and finally getting his shot. At center, it's another first-year starter in Craig Williams who is making his first appearance after winning the job over redshirt freshman Jason Harrington.

The right side are the only returning starters with Simpson back at right guard. While Williams is another returning starter, Simpson is the only one returning at the position he played last season. Will this reshuffle be the magic trick and the one that returns USF to its glory days as a dominant offensive line?
    -
  3. Can Diaz manufacture pressure with no true dominant edge rusher?
If people had questions about USF's pass rushers last season, those have only been raised this year. While Dale Bolen and Mark Robinson weren't 10+ sack artists, they were both extremely tough against the run and could muscle their way to the quarterback. The Bulls potential starters on the edge are sophomores Kyle Swain, Marcus Smith and true freshman Greg White. Between the three, zero career tackles yet alone sacks at the college level.

Diaz is known for his man-heavy looks that bring in pressure from the secondary and the linebacker position as well as twists and stunts. It worked in his first and only season as the Bulls defensive coordinator back in 2020 but he had Chuck Sanders, arguably the Bulls best pass rusher of all time. Sanders would have 22 sacks the next season and finish his career with 43.
    -
  4. Will White's accuracy issues follow him into the season?
Sophomore quarterback Jed White showed flashes of his brilliance as a passer last season, especially when he was able to sell a hard play fake and roll out to his right before making throws to the middle on the field after sucking in the defense with the threat of his legs. Those were in certain packages, however, and with the defense primarily focusing in on White as primarily a runner. Defenses will be more prepared now and most likely, more fundamentally sound.

If you extrapolate White's yard per carry averages last season as a backup (10.3) and give him the 169 carries that Michael Harrel had as a sophomore, he'd have over 1,700 yards on the ground. While there are no doubts that White will be extremely effective as a runner, it remains to be seen how good he'll be throwing the football.

He struggled at times during the spring and it was evident in the spring game that there is a big drop off in arm talent between White and last year starter Nick Williams. Even Jay Jackson is a better thrower of the football at this point in their development. Can White take that next step and can he do it quickly as the Bulls open the season against Notre Dame.

USF Bulls update roster, jersey number and release depth chart for Notre Dame game
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

In what has become a yearly tradition, the South Florida Bulls released a hype video featuring wide receiver Darius Downs sporting the number one jersey. Downs, who had over 1,000 yards as a freshman, wore #11 in his first two seasons in Tampa. A former five-star recruit, he was one of five Bulls players to be named to the preseason first-team All-SEC along with defensive backs Sid Robinson, Corey Johnson, Jay Jacobs and Kevin Justice.

The team typically announces the decision on who will wear the number one during the spring game with rumored finalists being Downs, fellow receiver Jason Barbour and running back David Fuller. The decision was delayed this season with head coach Malcolm Francois citing Downs work ethic during the summer workouts as one of the decisive factors.

The video came the same day that the Bulls depth chart was leaked. Within hours, the school officially released the depth chart which provided little to no surprises outside of Fuller and Derrick Green being listed as co-starters. Previously, Fuller was the starter with Green as his backup.

It also featured some number changes, including Jacobs overtaking the #2 jersey following Jake Lott's departure to the draft.

Team looks very good on paper, could make a quiet run. Don't know how I feel about your pick at quarterback :curtain:

yeah i try to factor in other things when making roster decisions, the same way head coaches have to as far as seniority, development, recruiting, etc...
