Bulls Torch Notre Dame's Defense to a Tune of 56 Points on Opening Day
A fumble on their drive of the season, an interception on the second. Both resulted in touchdowns and Notre Dame jumping out to a fourteen point lead before the starting lineups were announced.
While USF's season couldn't have gotten to a worse start, Notre Dame's first game of the season couldn't have finished any worse.
The Fighting Irish were outscored 56-10 for the rest of the game, including being shutout for nearly two quarters in the Bulls 56-24 win over Notre Dame in Honolulu on Saturday.
After the early mistakes, quarterback Jed White was able to lead three straight scoring drives, tossing two passes for touchdowns to Darius Downs and Andrew Rivas as well as keeping it himself for a eight-yard scamper.
True freshman tight end Jean-Jacques Francois did his best Jed White impersonation to finish the Bulls' second drive in the third quarter, lining up as a wildcat quarterback and powering his way through the endzone from the one-yard line. His brother Malcolm Francois Jr. would get in on the action too, scoring on a corner route that left the defense dizzy and confused.
Notre Dame quarterback John Daniels was concussed near the end of the fourth quarter and replaced by sophomore Adam Malone who scored a touchdown on his first drive. The Fighting Irish lost running back Jasper McDonald one of their first plays as McDonald was tackled following a 26-yard screen.
Bulls head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. downplayed the Bulls' touchdown with 9 seconds left, faking the handoff before going up top to receiver Jason Barbour despite the game already being well in hand.
"The offense has goals each game," said Francois Sr, "They still had time left to accomplish one of those goals and they went for it, simple as that."
Notre Dame beat USF last season en route to their national championship.

Overreaction Sundays: Biggest takeaways from USF's drubbing of Notre Dame
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles
After many doubted why USF was ranked so highly in preseason polls after losing so much talent from the year before, including their starting quarterback, the Bulls quickly put those doubts to rest after overcoming an early 14-0 hole to beat defending national champion Notre Dame soundly.
Jed White threw for 336 yards, the most by any quarterback in the country that week and now the Bulls get to return home from Hawaii, enjoy a bye week and some extra days of preparation for LSU.
It was only one game but Bulls fans might have noticed a few things already:
- The running game eventually busted but touch and go in the beginning
The Bulls ended up rushing for over two hundred yards and their top three rushes -- David Fuller, Derrick Green and Jed White -- all averaged over five yards per carry with Green coming in at exactly nine-yards per carry. Green had a couple big runs, including one for 28-yards and White had a 39-yarder himself, scoring on the QB keeper.
Fuller was a bit more consistent but if you take away some of those bigger runs, the Bulls numbers are a bit more pedestrian and within the flow of the game, especially early on, the Bulls did struggle to get that running game going. It's early in the season and some more seasoning on that offensive line which includes three first-year starters should result in better play down the line.
-
- The defense is going to be fun to watch -- until it isn't
Manny Diaz's aggressive style of play calling was evident with the defensive coordinator dialing up a ton of blitz on third downs and practically the entire fourth quarter, especially when John Daniels left the game.
They ended the game with seven sacks and two interceptions with both of them coming on plays where Daniels was forced to throw the ball away before he wanted to. Despite this pressure look, the Bulls did not give him up a ton of bust coverages. Most of the longer completions where on plays where Daniels was able to keep the play alive with his legs and find a receiver open on a scramble drill.
It remains to be seen if Diaz's aggressive play calling will continue to be effective but for now, the Bulls defense was electric.
-
- While not Nick Williams, Jed White is a capable passer
QB Jed White did not have the cleanest of spring practices, struggling throwing the football at times when asked to be accurate and on time as well as pushing the ball down the field.
Outside of the last offensive play of the game and a deep pass to Malcolm Francois Jr, White did not push his luck with the down the field passing attack. He also didn't attack the seams with tight ends Vincent Everett and Tariq Smith, something Nick Williams did early and often last season. Smith had two catches for seven yards while Everett was a bit busier with eight catches but averaged just 6.6 yards per reception. By comparison, Everett averaged 16.6 yards per reception in 2025 and 9.3 in 2024 while Smith averaged 13.3 last season as a freshman.
It's only one game and he might get more confident as the season goes on but it'll be interesting to keep an eye on to see if crossing routes and the flats are where White continues to butter his bread.

LSU is Unhappy With Their Poor Showing Against USF
Many wondered how USF would fare in the SEC after dominating conferences such as the American Athletic and the Big 12 for the past decade.
If LSU was their first hurdle, they've cleared it with room to spare.
The game was never in doubt as the Bulls pounced on the Tigers, punting just once as they skedaddled their way to a 52-17 victory on Saturday afternoon in Tampa.
The win not only gave the team their first ever SEC win as a member of the conference but also extended their home winning streak to 43, placing them within reach of the all-time record of 52 games set by the Miami Hurricanes in the early 2000s.
The Bulls looked like the old school Hurricanes with their display of speed, attacking the Tigers secondary in certain weak spots with receiver Jason Barbour averaging nearly 23 yards per reception. Tight end Vincent Everett wasn't too far behind at eighteen yards, catching six passes for 108 yards and the score.
USF emptied the bench in the fourth quarter but did not stop their pursuit of the fifty burger, kicking in a field goal on the final play of the game.
