No. 2 Bulls get favorable schedule in 2027, avoid Alabama and don't leave confines of Raymond James in November
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles
Perhaps the most impressive part of the South Florida Bulls' success the past decade is that they've done it with one of the toughest non-conference schedules year in and year out. This season is no different with a road trip to Columbus on October 9th but compared to year's past, opening the season at Boise State and closing it at home against a struggling UCF program is a bit of a reprieve.
The Bulls open their season with four unranked opponents, albeit three road games before things ratchet up with a home stand against #18 Ole Miss, perhaps the toughest test of the Bulls 46-game home winning streak which they will look to extend. If the Bulls pass that test, they'll end the season with four straight home games and the opportunity to extend the streak to 52, matching the record set by the Miami Hurricanes.
The only team ranked higher than the Bulls in the initial AP polls that were released is Alabama who the Bulls won't face in 2027 with their cross-divisional matchups being Ole Miss, LSU and Auburn.
2027 USF Schedule

After sitting out last year, USF transfer trio ready to make impact felt
Johnny Murray -- The Tampa Bay Times Sports Columnist
Summer workouts are in full swing at USF and if you need any proof, just set foot inside the recently renovated multi-million dollar athletic complex at the crack of dawn. Amidst the quiet campus will be the sound of weights clanging, banging and shouting. While the weights aren't the culprit for the latter, redshirt sophomore offensive tackle James King often is.
"Big James [King] is a natural born leader," says USF quarterback Jed White, "He's been working hard since he got here and he's a special talent, I think he'll be a big piece in what we do this season."
King was part of a three-man transfer class, a rarity for South Florida as they tend to focus on developing their in-program guys but with three-years of eligibility left for King, the Bulls took a flyer on an Alabama kid that just didn't feel at home at the University of Georgia after redshirting as a freshman.
"I started reaching out to different people that I had met during my recruitment," said King on his decision to come to USF, "Kyle [Swain] and I had played together in a few different all-star games and when I reached out to him, it didn't take long for the coaching staff to let it be known that they wanted me."
USF, wanting to rebuilt its offensive line, didn't hesitate to pull the trigger on King, a former four-star recruit. They weren't done yet.
Andrew Smart's freshman season at UAB couldn't have gotten off to a worse start. His position coach that recruited him left the job just three days after the early signing day period. The Dragons weren't keen on releasing Smart out of his NLI and Smart's parents insisted the Boca Grande native at least give it a shot.
He tore the meniscus in his right knee in his second spring practice and was in the transfer portal by the summer. Head coach Charlie Strong convinced Smart to come back but the relationship never repaired and Smart found himself back in the portal once more.
"It felt like a wasted year," says Smart, who speaks highly of Strong and UAB but says it wasn't the right for him, "I heard USF wanted offensive lineman and I just showed up on campus one day and asked to talk to the coaches."
While King and Smart fell into the Bulls' lap, the final member of the trio was more of a process. When USF beat Minnesota in the BCS National Championship Game, Miami native B.J. Patton was in the stands and one of the legion of people rocking the burgundy and gold in support of the Gophers that night. Patton, a four-star recruit as well, was part of a three top recruits from the state of Florida that committed to the University of Minnesota along with receivers Josh Curry and George Ostrander. They all redshirted with Patton spending just one season before leaving Minnesota. Patton declined to go into details on why he chose to leave Minnesota but when he did, plenty of schools came calling. But USF's call was different.
"Coach Francois didn't really sell me anything," Patton says, "He just offered me the opportunity to compete and to look at the track record of pass rushers at the University of South Florida."
Patton also credits his cousin, former USF offensive tackle Tanner Patton, in his recruitment as well as the ability to be closer to his daughter who resides in his hometown of Kendall, Florida.
With all three forced to sit out a season with the NCAA's transfer rules, it allowed them to get 'indoctrinated' according to USF head coach Malcolm Francois. They learned the ropes, how things are done, and most importantly, how to compete.
All three will compete for starting jobs this fall with King being the favorite to win the left tackle spot left empty by All-SEC Tanner Patton and B.J. Patton starting at rush linebacker during the spring.
Smart has played both offensive tackle and guard, with the coaching staff hinting that he could be in the mix for the job at right guard along with incumbent starter Chris Simpson and Robbie Wade.
The Bulls will begin fall camp on August 4th, just a week away.

The biggest positional battles heading into fall camp at USF
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles
Development is done in the spring, toughness is built in the summer and in the fall, jobs are won.
The University of South Florida began fall camp last Friday with all players reporting for camp in what was a light, fun day by all accounts. The program also hosted several recruits on unofficial visits on Friday night, including Texas native Nigel Medley who made the trip out of his own pocket in order to be in attendance.
With Friday's light practice in the rearview mirror and the intensity expected to ratchet up, here are the positional battles that Bulls fans should be keeping an eye on as the opener is nearing:
Feature Running Back
Projected Depth Chart
#9 Jason Finley, Sr. | 6'0", 207lbs | 85 ovr, 91 spd, 88 acc, 90 btk, 72 car, 85 trk, 93 elu OR
#22 Dion Rogers, Rs Fr. | 5'11", 213lbs | 72 ovr, 93 spd, 91 acc, 67 btk, 65 car, 66 trk, 86 elu OR
#32 Ronnie Smith, Rs So. | 6'0", 199lbs | 77 ovr, 90 spd, 91 acc, 79 btk, 71 car, 51 trk, 84 elu
Finley is quietly a senior now and if seniority wins out, he should be the top guy for the Bulls who, by all accounts, intend to have a running back by committee. Rogers got a ton of burn in the spring and while it may have been in order to preserve the legs of Finley, it does show that he's at least leapfrogged Smith after redshirting last season and being a practice All-American according to reports.
Z Receiver
Project Depth Chart
#85 Andrew Rivas, So. | 6'6", 219lbs | 79 ovr, 89 spd, 94 acc, 77 cth, 79 jmp OR
#80 James Harper, Rs Jr. | 6'5", 234lbs | 82 ovr, 95 spd, 98 acc, 85 cth, 75 jmp OR
#81 Derrick Byrd, Fr. | 6'4", 211lbs | 81 ovr, 89 spd, 94 acc, 81 cth, 77 jmp
Rivas operated primarily out of the slot last season and as a jump-ball receiver at the goal-line, catching one of his touchdown passes that way. It was his position to lose in the spring with Byrd not getting on campus until June but Harper, who some fans might have already written off, certainly closed the gap and at times outplayed Rivas. It's going to be interesting to watch in camp who is able to separate from the pack and if this bleeds into the season.
Y Receiver
Project Depth Chart
#4 Corey Montgomery, Fr. | 6'1", 199lbs | 81 ovr, 97 spd, 92 acc, 78 cth, 65 cit
#12 Jimmy Ingram, Rs Fr. | 5'10", 190lbs | 76 ovr, 89 spd, 90 acc, 68 cth, 80 cit
Montgomery with the starting slot receiver being his job to lose, he was that impressive in the spring. Ingram might be the best route runner on the team but he's had issues with drops in practice which kept him off the field entirely as a true freshman. He's a bit improved this time around and had a solid spring but nothing compared to Montgomery who at times was the Bulls best offensive player during the spring.
The receivers and corners had a fade challenge after every spring practice where it'd be one-on-one, simple fade route from the 50-yard line. The Bulls top corner Pierre Francois was exceptional in this drill according to the players I spoke to but the only player that consistently beat Francois? Montgomery.
Starting Right Guard
Project Depth Chart
#75 Chris Simpson, Jr. | 6'3", 314lbs | 84 ovr, 93 acc, 90 str, 93 pbk, 83 rbk, 85 impact blocking
#67 Robbie Wade, Rs Jr. | 6'0", 314lbs | 84 ovr, 87 acc, 81 str, 80 pbk, 94 rbk, 75 impact blocking
#62 Andrew Smart, Rs So. | 6'3", 313lbs | 75 ovr, 93 acc, 85 str, 73 pbk, 90 rbk, 81 impact blocking
A two-year starter, Simpson has yet to take that next jump and lacks some of the nastiness that the Bulls like in their pulling guards. The coaching staff has been very open about their being competition at right guard which is unusual for coaches to say about a position with a returning starter of two years. Simpson is still one of the better athletes along the front five and should win this battle but Wade and Smart could make it interesting.
Starting Right Defensive End
Project Depth Chart
#97 Marcus Smith, Rs Jr. | 6'1", 271lbs | 80 ovr, 74 spd, 84 acc, 80 str, 83 pmv, 96 fmv, 81 bsh OR
#15 Nate Stewart, Fr. | 6'4", 264lbs | 81 ovr, 80 spd, 84 acc, 82 str, 84 pmv, 69 fmv, 79 bsh OR
#98 James Faulk, Sr. | 6'4", 286lbs | 77 ovr, 72 spd, 82 acc, 86 str, 79 pmv, 78 fmv, 78 bsh OR
#90 Justin Young, Fr. | 6'4", 246lbs | 75 ovr, 71 spd, 72 acc, 78 str, 81 pmv, 80 fmv, 78 bsh
USF can go a few different ways here. Faulk switched from defensive tackle to defensive end in the new 3-4 front and would be a bigger body up front to free up the linebackers, who have had issues in the past. Smith is the most experienced with two sacks to his name last season as part of the rotation at defensive end. But the real potential superstar is true freshman Nate Stewart who is a cut above in terms of athleticism from the rest.
He's a bit raw as a pass rusher but against the run, he should be able to own his ground and eventually grow into a more well rounded player.
Nickel Corner
Project Depth Chart
#25 Marcus Hodge, So. | 5'11", 182lbs | 76 ovr, 93 spd, 83 acc, 86 mcv, 87 zcv, 76 press OR
#28 Jay Burke, Fr. | 5'11", 191lbs | 75 ovr, 93 spd, 90 acc, 80 mcv, 84 zcv, 79 press OR
#27 Sam Harris, Rs Fr. | 5'11", 198lbs | 73 ovr, 92 spd, 86 acc, 81 mcv, 82 zcv, 78 press
Injuries last season pressed Hodge into a more active role than many expected as the team's dime back. With Jonathan Mirvil healthy, he seems entrenched into his position opposite of Pierre Francois.
Athletically, Burke is the more intriguing options and he showed flashes throughout the spring, more than Hodge or Harris showed as a true freshman. There's no debating he has the highest upside down the line but right now, for the 2027 season, is he the right option in the nickel?

Five-star running back Nigel Medley commits to Bulls along with four-star CB Wright
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider
The University of South Florida had an impromptu, informal cookout on Friday as they broke for fall camp. Several high school juniors and seniors were in attendance, mostly local prospects except for five-star Nigel Medley who made the trek from Coppell, Texas. We now know why.
Medley committed on Sunday to the Bulls, joining four-star cornerback Andrew Wright who announced his commitment early Saturday morning to be the first two members of USF's recruiting class.
A high school quarterback, Medley has been recruited exclusively as a running back to the Bulls while Oklahoma and Texas were open to the option of him playing quarterback. We'll see if things change as he was originally recruited by Walt Wells but in Rhett Lashlee's offense, Medley might be a more natural fit at quarterback. Lashlee was part of the staff at Auburn that had Nick Marshall, a converted corner, at quarterback.
If Medley does end up at running back, Bulls fans can turn on his freshman and sophomore tape at Coppell High School where he had over 500 yards both rushing and receiving as a gadget player before taking over as a quarterback last season. Medley threw for 4,380 yards last season along with 981 yards on the ground and through three seasons at CHS, the five-star athlete has amassed 61 touchdowns.
In Wright, the Bulls are getting a technically sound corner that might not pass the athleticism sniff test that the Bulls typically like at corner. A move to safety is not out of the picture for Wright who does not mind helping out in run support. A good comp for Wright might be Francois as a physically tough, technically sound corner that lacked the ideal size or speed but has grown into an SEC caliber corner that will get his shot at playing boundary this season.

His final masterpiece: More to come from USF's Jed White with Rhett Lashlee lurking in the shadows
Sean Caesar -- The Athletic Writer
It was a seemingly routine play in what was a very vanilla showing from the USF Bulls offense during their televised spring game.
USF QB Jed White had come up to the line of scrimmage before the snap of the ball, barking orders before retracing his steps back into the offensive backfield. The ball was snapped, White looked left, looked right and fired a pass to the sidelines for a six-yard gain before the punting unit came out onto the field.
White jogged off the field and before his gold cleats even touched the whites of the sidelines, new USF offensive coordinator had his left hand on White's chest plate and his right hand was drawing into the air what seemed like route concepts.
"We have a great bond," says White of his relationship with Lashlee, "I feel like I've known him forever and we just talk about football, all the time. Not just our offense but football in general, things we like about the game, don't like. The guys we like watching, don't like watching. Ideas, concepts, everything. I can talk football for hours with that guy [Lashlee]."
If the spring game was an indication, Lashlee and White will be doing a ton of talking this season. After every drive, Lashlee would rush over to speak to White coming off the field. And when Lashlee was too busy lighting up a running back for a failed block or a receiver for not getting enough depth on his route five plays ago, White would be the one navigating through the sidelines to find his offensive coordinator.
Last year, Walt Wells was in the coaches box and left a lot of the sideline tutoring to quarterback coach Grant Oliver and head coach Malcolm Francois Sr.. With Oliver now in Michigan with Wells, that responsibility now falls on Lashlee who is a more active and energetic coach.
They say if it's not broke, don't fix it. For Lashlee, he's inheriting a Heisman winning quarterback that even with a ton of talent lost to the draft, can put the team on his back. So the offseason hasn't been about fixing but just fine tuning, adding a few brushes here and there to paint the final picture of what many think can be a repeat Heisman performance.
White is down to 242 pounds after playing the second half of last season closer to 255 pounds and his body fat percentage is under 10 percent for the first time. The leaner White wants to focus on his throwing motion and getting rid of what he calls quirks in his mechanics which impact his accuracy.
"I tend to power the ball a lot," White says, "I've always known it, coaches have known it in the past since I was in high school and it'd be a thing the first day or two of practice but after a while, it was sort of like 'okay, that's who he is' and that'd be that. With coach Lashlee, it's everyday that he calls me out on it and other little quirks in my throwing motion, footwork, mechanics, all of it. He wants it done right every single time and at first, it's frustrating because I'm a rhythm thrower and I'm trying to think of all these things but over time, it's starting to pay off."
White completed 73.6 percent of his passes last season. He wants to hit 75 this season. He also wants to bring his interceptions down to single digits from 12 and split his sacks in half with quicker decision makings.
The touchdowns, the yards? Those will come, says White. He's a focused on being a better version of himself as a passer -- not a thrower or a football player -- and as a result, he'll be better.
Those are scary words if you're a defense with USF on its schedule.

Francois earns pre-season All-American honors as he continues to dominate fall camp
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles
It's only right that the biggest and baddest dude on USF's defense is five-foot-nine Pierre Francois, who several college coaches passed on once he got to their camps and they sized him up.
Francois, who had a terrific sophomore campaign, was named a preseason All-American along with quarterback Jed White, as expected, and defensive backs Jay Jacobs and Paul Williams.
The junior cornerback has been turning heads during fall camp, even when going up against some of the bigger receivers. Francois will look to make the jump from playing almost exclusively in the slot last season to now being the Bulls' top corner and he's been holding his own out there.
Stock Up
1. RS Freshman RB Dion Rogers. It remains to be seen how involved Rogers actually is in the offense once the games start counting but he was a standout in the spring and continued that momentum into the fall and seems entrenched, at worst, to be the team's RB2 and he could creep up into RB1 status by end of season.
2. CB Pierre Francois. It bears repeating again just how good Francois has been in fall camp after an okay to good spring. He's been the Bulls best player on defense and his physicality against some of the bigger receivers has folks wondering if he can potentially play at the next level.
3. DB Jeremiah McCullough. You can't help but wonder if Jeremiah 'Mac Daddy' McCullough was here in the spring, if he could potentially be in the mix for that spot at corner. The Bulls have been cross training him at both safety and corner, mainly because it's going to be tough to get him on the field as a safety with All-Americans Jay Jacobs and Paul Williams. There's some opportunities at corner, especially if injuries start to occur.
Stock Down
1. RS Junior G Robbie Wade. It can take offensive lineman a while to get going with Tanner Patton being an example of a fifth-year player that took the long road to develop but once he did, he was an all-SEC tackle. For Wade, it won't happen this year as his pass blocking continues to be a pain point according to reports out of camp.
2. Freshman P Spencer Quinn. Even when punting with no rush, Quinn struggled in the spring game and the leg strength just isn't there for him. Walk-on Kyle Concepcion has looked better at times which isn't great news for the Bulls who spent a roster spot and scholarship counter on Quinn. He needs to turn things around quick or it could get ugly, especially after the Bulls have had exceptional punter play for the past few seasons.
2. RS Senior LB Dan Miller. None of the linebackers have looked great when speaking to speaking to those within the program. Even outside of the spring game, the Bulls kept it relatively 'tamed' in terms of offensive complexity in the spring before starting to turn things on in the fall and the linebackers have been lost, especially Miller when considering he's a fifth-year player. Marcus Rhoden and Greg Booth haven't been impactful either so Miller's spot is safe for now but the Bulls might have an issue at Will linebacker this season.

Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer
The University of South Florida has released its first official depth chart of the season ahead of it's season opener on the road against Boise State.

#2 USF (1-0, 0-0) | 0 | 14 | 28 | 7 || 49
BOISE (0-1, 0-0) | 7 | 3 | 7 | 0 || 17
-----------------------------------------------
Broncos are No Match for USF as Bulls Pull Away in Second Half
Missed tackles, dropped passes and errant throws.
With Jed White completing just as many passes as interceptions in his first six attempts, Boise State found themselves up a touchdown with the ball in USF's redzone and the chance to go up two scores. They would be held to just a field goal and score just once for the next two and a half quarter while USF proceeded to score forty nine points, including 35 in the second half, as they ran away with a 49-17 win to open the season.
White bounced back from his early struggles to finish the game with five touchdowns, including two to true freshman Corey Montgomery who did most of the work on the long touchdowns.
Under new offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee, the Bulls relied more on their running game and less on the Heisman winner with 220 yards rushing and just one turnover while the Bulls defense forced four in Justin Wilcox's debut at USF.
