Davis Hits 37 Yard Game Winning Field Goal To Beat Ohio State in Columbus
Even Superman sometimes needs the Justice League and on Saturday, they came through for Heisman winner Jed White.

USF true freshman kicker Sheldon Davis was unfazed by the moment, kicking in the 37-yard game winner through the uprights at time expired to beat Ohio State 31-28 on Saturday afternoon.

Davis, who had only attempted and made just one field goal prior to the game, got the opportunity after USF's defense was able to hold off Ohio State for nearly an entire half, surrendering just field goals and forcing a stop in the fourth quarter to give USF the ball back with less than two minutes left with a chance to win the game.

White and the Bulls offense did just that, marching down the field and putting White's previous three interceptions -- all in the second half -- in the past. White finished with 250 yards passing and 110 yards rushing with three total touchdowns but it was his three interceptions that almost became the story.

After starting the game with eleven straight completions, White opened the second half with an interception on an attempted deep ball to Corey Montgomery down the middle of the field but White didn't have the arm strength to get it there. White's second interception would come two series later when the Ohio State defense was able to jam tight end Jean-Jacques Francois, throwing the time off on the out route as Cornelius Tyler jumped the route.

USF's defense was able to stop Ohio State not only from capitalizing on the turnover but USF would force a turnover of themselves two possessions later with Mirvil returning a pick six for the score and extend their lead to eight.

Ohio State's offense, who entered the game in the top five in both total and scoring offense, finished with 279 yards rushing and just 96 yards passing. They converted just three third downs and quarterback John Bryant, who many predicted a big game from, had a largely pedestrian outing.

Wilcox continues impressive streak with five-star commitment from Ocoee's Jason Hamilton
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

Many wondered if new defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox would be able to recruit in the Deep South and the state of Florida after spending almost two decades out west. He's certainly answering those questions.

Five-star defensive end Jason Hamilton committed to the Bulls last week, setting the stage for four-star defensive tackle Kevin Simon and three-star quarterback Todd Woods to join him.

Wilcox, who was Hamilton's primary recruiter, was able to beat out Alabama and Notre Dame for the coveted prospect.

The seventh ranked athlete in the country, the Bulls have exclusively recruited Hamilton at defensive end. He has ways to go as a pass rusher as his pass rush moves are a bit raw and he relies heavily on his ability to bull rush opposing offensive lineman, something he won't be able to get away with at the next level at 248 pounds. Hamilton projects to fit right in Wilcox's defense where defensive ends don't need to be world class athletes and their pass rush responsibilities are limited.

Staying on the defensive line, Hamilton's partner in crime on the inside might end up being Simon at nose tackle. Simon's most impressive trait is his ability to track down ball carriers beyond the line of scrimmage despite not having the most elite of first steps. He'll need to continue to get stronger as he's a bit of tweener in the Bulls 3-4 scheme with not enough athleticism to play the five-technique but perhaps a little light -- both on the scale and in his strength measurables -- to be a true nose tackle.

With USF potentially losing quarterback Jed White to the draft and already having only three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster, Woods is a needed addition just from a numbers standpoint. He has some developing to do both from an athlete standpoint as well as a thrower.

Bulls fans better not get too attached to DC Justin Wilcox following his showcase vs. Ohio State
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

It's become ordinary now that coordinators are only in Tampa for a cup of coffee before bolting for a head coaching job to be named later after one or two seasons with the University of South Florida.

Any hope that things would be different with defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox, who was a Group of Five reject, quickly evaporated as the Ohio State Buckeyes was held to just 20 points and 279 yards of total offense.

Wilcox's stock has risen this season, guiding the Bulls to the 20th ranked scoring defense in the nation and fifth in the SEC. They haven't had to go up against the toughest of offenses, outside of Ohio State, but nevertheless, it's been an impressive start for the defense under Wilcox.

They'll face some tough challenges and offenses in Auburn's 22nd ranked passing offense, Tennessee's 9th ranked scoring offense, Miami's 18th ranked rushing offense and Florida State's 13th ranked total offense.

Other things to watch in the second half of the season as the Bulls enjoy a bye this week;

  • Getting QB Jed White back on track
Through six games, White already has nine interceptions on the season after throwing twelve all of last season. His yardage numbers are way down, which was expected in Rhett Lashlee's offense, and his completion percentage is at a career high 74.3 percent.

If he can limit those interceptions and keep that number under fifteen for the season, White could be on his way to New York once more.
    -
  • The impact true freshmen
Linebacker Greg Booth is third on the team in tackles. Cornerback Jay Burke is fourth and tied for second in interceptions with one. Defensive end Nate Stewart is tied for sixth on the team in tackles for loss. Wide receiver Derrick Byrd is second in receiving touchdowns and fourth in receptions while Corey Montgomery leads the team in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns.

They're all true freshman and they've all been key pieces in the Bulls starter. Burke has had to deal with penalty issues while Stewart can sometimes disappear from games in terms of impact but overall, this is shaping up to be a really good class with the trajectory of all these players.

With six games under their belt, including trips to hostile Georgia and Ohio State, the home stand to end the season should allow these young players to continue to make plays.
    -
  • Can RB Dion Rogers make claim to RB1?
One of the bright spots from the off-season that has translated into the regular season has been running back Dion Rogers.

After redshirting last season, Rogers turned heads both in the spring as well as in the fall, leapfrogging redshirt sophomore Ronnie Smith who rushed for 202 yards last season on 4.5 yards per carry.

Rogers has already bested those numbers with 369 yards on the season along with a team leading 7.4 yards per carry among running backs. Senior Jason Finley has been able to keep him at bay with both his seniority and his improved play this season. His YPC is up nearly a yard and a half from last season to 6.5 and he's averaging twenty more yards per game and leads the team at 67.3.

It was a tall task for Rogers to come in and replace Finley, sight unseen but with meaningful snaps now on his resume, it's hard to argue that Finley is still the better running back. Will the carries reflect that by the end of the season?
    -
  • Who can break from the pack at wide receiver?
Corey Montgomery and Jean-Jacques Francois account for nearly 40 percent of the team's receptions this season and nearly 50 percent of their receiving yards.

Only one other receiver on the roster, Ryan Wagner, is averaging over 10 yards per reception but Wagner also leads the team in drops with three. It's been a jumbled crew at wide receiver with Derrick Byrd (14 receptions, 133 yards, 3 touchdowns) seemingly leading the best of the rest followed by Wagner (16 receptions, 181 yards, touchdown), Andrew Rivas (13 receptions, 107 yards) and James Harper (10 receptions, 76 yards).

Harper hasn't been able to get a ton of targets with the Bulls passing offense shrinking compared to year's past and instead dealing in the short to medium area throws. This favors receivers like Montgomery who are able to do their damage after the catch. Again, only Montgomery, Francois and Wagner are averaging more than five yards after the catch with Montgomery being at 8.9 while Francois and Wagner are at 5.1 with Byrd at two yards, Rivas at 4.9 and Harper at 2.9.

Four-star Jacksonville tight end Fields commits to the Bulls
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

University of South Florida has received their seventh commitment of the 2028 recruiting cycle from four-star tight end Lance Fields.

Fields, listed at six-foot-four and 242 pounds, held offers from Florida Atlantic, Florida State and FIU but was primarily being recruited by USF and Florida Atlantic.

Other schools, such as Clemson and West Virginia, dropped their interest from Fields after what was described by many as an underwhelming performance in both camps and 7ON7 tournaments.

A limited athlete, Fields figured to be a potential H-back in the Bulls offense under Rhett Lashlee with more blocking duties than being asked to be a receiver. His testing numbers are similar to Jacob Dickson who was a very effective blocking tight end and eventual fullback in the Bulls offense under offensive coordinator Walt Wells.

The Bulls are looking to pair Fields with four-star tight end Josh Smith out of Connecticut who is a more well rounded athlete capable of being both a receiver and a blocker with a similar build as Fields. Smith recently took a surprise official visit to UCONN and has visits planned to Virginia Tech, Minnesota and Oklahoma State along with the Bulls.

Auburn Hands the #1 Bulls Their First Loss Since 2025
With Rutgers upsetting #7 Ohio State earlier in the day and Tennessee having a ten point lead on #2 Alabama at one point, upsets were in the air and on the menu.

Even after being down two scores with less than two minutes left in the game, the Auburn Tigers didn't let the moment get away from them or too big, pulling off the comeback upset victory over USF in overtime to beat the previously unbeaten Bulls 38-35.

USF had taken a 35-25 lead with 3:47 left in the game when Jed White connected with Derrick Byrd, an Alabama native, for a 55-yard touchdown to seemingly put the game away. Both teams swapped punts before Auburn was finally able to get into the endzone on a 31-yard touchdown pass from Eric Dunn to Jeremy McIntire.

Dunn, replacing the injured William Higdon, threw for a career high and school 436 yards on 55 attempts.

USF's James Harper failed to field the ensuing onside kick, allowing Auburn to recover the ball with 47 seconds left in the game. They used 43 of those seconds to get into scoring range and kick in the game-tying field goal to force overtime.

USF got the ball first in overtime and were seemingly ready to score with the ball on the eight yard line when White tried to connect with Byrd again after a dropped touchdown pass by Andrew Rivas on the previous play. This time, safety Andy Bell was able to cover ground and intercept the pass in the endzone.

The interception set up the game winning 35-yard field goal three plays later.
