Fast Forward 18 Months.



"Dig this, Tiny. A little birdie told me that big things are coming to this prison." My friend Ronnie said as he began to walk closer to the fence & away from those standing nearby.

I met Ronnie after my first couple of days in & we've been tight since. We spend most of our time in the gym training our bodies. There's not much else to do productively in here besides read a book. He's slightly older than me, & our friendship feels that of a big & little brother in here. Ronnie's going to be in here a lot longer than me, though.

"What did you hear, Ron?" I asked.

"Someone's going to get a chance to get out."

"What do you mean get out? Like escape?"

"No." He grinned. "Someone's going to get a chance to fight their way out."

Fight their way out? I still wasn't sure what Ronnie was trying to say.

"There's a private buyer out there who's going to be hosting a fighting tournament at this prison & whoever wins the tournament will earn their way out."

What in the hell?

"Wow. How's that going to work?"

"Apparently money talks. Whoever wants to host this tournament is going to make a hefty donation to the state. There will be rules. Not just any of these muthafuckas is getting out. It depends on what you did, how long your sentencing is. After what I've heard from you about your fighting skills, I think you should give it a shot. Who knows, you could be getting out a lot sooner than you thought if you win."

Ronnie made a good point. Not to mention, always being surrounded by men, I'm ready to break my foot off in someone's ass.

"How do I sign up?"

"I'll let the birdie know to put you on. But there's one more detail I haven't mentioned yet." Ronnie said.

"And what's that?"

"It's not normal fighting. It's bare-knuckle boxing."

Time for my first bareknuckle boxing bout. & inside of a prison. I hope this is safe.

"The rules are simple fellas. Not headbutting & no low blows. Protect your head & come out swinging."



I definitely came out swinging in this one. Swinging them right on his face over & over again.



But this man had heart. I was delivering some hard punches. He clearly didn't have the talent to compete against me.

Second Round. Too Easy.



"Heh. Really? Was it going to be this easy?" I said to Ronnie as I walked out of the ring with my second victory over some guy that took 1 on the chin and 1 directly in the nose & was asleep. I didn't even break a sweat.

"You're really putting on a show, Tiny!" Ronnie said.

"But since they've been escorting each of you out between fights you haven't seen the final competitor."

Here he goes with the foreshadowing again.

"I hope you've got hands Tiny because this next guy is bigger & stronger than you. He must be new here to the prison because I've never seen him. Have you heard of Isaac Frost? He looks like a legit prizefighter."

"Isaac Frost. I've definitely heard of him. He was one of the best boxers in the game a decade ago. I remember he got locked up & that's the last I heard of him. That's who I'm facing in the next round?"

"He can be figured out." I said. I was so used to the previous two competitors being lightwork that I wasn't expecting much from the third.

"I'm going back to the ring & earning my way out. I'm leaving it all in the ring with my hands."

Bareknuckle Boxing | Final Round | I Isaac Frost



I started this fight getting my ass handed to me. This was the first knockdown.



And this was the second knockdown. Isaac Frost has BOMBS.



"Can you fucking see?" He said.

"Yes!"

"Then get your ass up!"

Ref had to make sure I was good. I was getting dominated. Ronnie was right. Isaac Frost was bigger & stronger than me, and that was the advantage to our fight. Goliath wasn't showing off any holes & I had been knocked on my ass twice.



But then I caught him with an uppercut.



And it was Goodnight, Isaac.

Winner: T. Jimenez, 8th Rd (KO)

Victorious.



"7...8...9...10! He's out!" The referee said to secure my ticket out of here.

"I guess you can say I got hands." I said to Ronnie as I hugged him once I exited the ring.

"Thank you so much for plugging me into this opportunity Ron. Seriously this is huge. I could never repay you."

"Make us proud on the outside man. I wonder if you still have to serve a few more days here or what the rules are going to be. I'll go try to find out for you." Ronnie said as he walked away.

This victory over Isaac Frost felt huge. Knowing his accomplishments as a fighter & now knowing I knocked him out has given me the biggest confidence boost. I can knock out anyone. I may have had an opportunity taken away from me but in this moment I like to imagine that this feeling of being champion is what it feels like to hold the National Championship Trophy.



Holding it in my hand after a hard fought season full of blood, sweat, & tears.



Earning respects as one of the best Miami quarterbacks to ever do it.

That dream feels impossible to comprehend at this point in my life. But today I am a champion, & hopefully they stick to their word, & I get out of here sooner than later.
