MSST (0-1, 0-1) | 0 |0 | 0 | 7 || 7
#8 USF (1-0, 1-0) | 14 | 14 | 14 | 21 || 63

USF opens the season with a blowout win over the Bulldogs
You only get one chance to make a first impression. Jason McDowell and Derek Young, two highly sought after recruits making their college debuts, did the most of their opportunity, taking their first college football touches for a touchdown.

McDowell would score once more as would three other true freshman players in quarterback Joey Spence, Sam Washington and Jarrod Green in USF's 63-7 blowout over Mississippi State in the season opener on Saturday.

USF QB Jeff Jones played just one drive in the second half before his day was over as was the case with sophomore running back Bobby Jackson. Jones threw for 243 yards and four touchdowns while Jackson led the team with 142 yards rushing and a touchdown. He also had another long touchdown that was called back due to a penalty on Young.

Spence replaced Jones and was almost perfect, aside from an interception in the third quarter. He completed 9 of 11 passes for 203 yards and threw touchdowns to three of his fellow true freshman receivers. The group of heralded recruits on offense -- Spence, McCarthy, Young, McDowell, Washington and Green -- were dubbed 'Seal Team Six' by head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. who heaped praise on them.

"They looked like veterans out there," said Francois Sr, "They push our upperclassmen and our upperclassmen push them all the time in practice so it's good to see that hard work pay off and see young guys making plays."

Mississippi State was able to move the ball throughout the game with 402 yards of total offense but couldn't finish drives, punting five times while USF never punted, going 8 for 8 on third downs and putting together 729 yards of total offense.

Bulls overcome slow start and shutout Tigers in dominating fashion
It took USF a quarter and a half to get really going before things started clicking on all cylinders with Jeff Jones throwing two interceptions in his first ten passes of the day.

USF's defense didn't mind nor bat an eye, keeping LSU Tigers offense at bay during the offense's slow start and throughout the game, shutting out the Tigers en route to a 42-0 blowout win on Saturday in Baton Rouge.

Jones eventually started finding his receivers, throwing five touchdown passes to extend his lead as USF's all time passing touchdown leader with 117. He threw for 359 yards as USF's offense was able to establish the running game early and then come back over the top with a strong play action game.

USF finished the game with 185 yards rushing among their 544 yards of total offense while LSU had just 256 yards of total offense and just 151 yards through the air. The Tigers converted just two of their twelve third down attempts, reaching the red zone just once before being intercepted.
