Bulls looking to land another elite class with Moses leading the way
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider
If you speak to college football coaches around the country, they try to avoid using terms like 'must get' prospect when it comes to recruiting given the nature of the beast, especially when recruiting the South Florida area.
For head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. and the staff at USF, Hillsborough High School receiver Joseph Moses is as can't miss as they come. The six-foot-two Tampa native enters his senior season as 247Sports top ranked recruit in the 2038 class, besting IMG's Cooper Hilinski.
Moses grew up literally across from USF's campus and has always wanted to be a Bull but now the nation's top ranked recruit, his options are open and he intends on exploring them.
"Obviously the easy decision is going to USF," Moses told 247 Sports in the spring, "I know if I got there, I won't regret it, that's for sure. That's the safe, no doubt option but I want to visit other schools and see if I like anything else."
Moses plans on visiting Florida and Alabama this fall after taking unofficial visits to the University of Miami and Florida State. Georgia Tech and Ole Miss have also remained active in his recruitment but for Moses, a father of two, says he doesn't really see himself leaving the state.
The Bulls offer not only a chance to play for his hometown team, stay close to home and his family but also the chance to catch footballs from last year's top ranked high school quarterback in Charlie Cooke. It doesn't hurt that Moses also plays for The Super Gremlins, a Tampa-based 7-on-7 squad that is ran by former Bulls tight end Jean-Jacques Francois who is the son of Francois Sr.
USF also appear to be targeting Dillard High School's Jet Millines as its QB for this cycle. The four-star dual threat quarterback is also considering Florida and local Miami in what promises to be a highly contested arms race for his signature.
Other top targets to watch this cycle include five-star Michael Robinson, the talented safety out of Belle Glade, Florida that was previously committed to Notre Dame. The Irish remain in contention along with Ohio State, Alabama and Texas with USF in the rear. Unlike Moses, Robinson has expressed in the past that he wants to get out of state which will make it an uphill battle for the Bulls.

Bulls enter the season atop the mountain but with competitors on the rise
Adriana Castillo -- usfwire.usatoday.com
Despite not making it to the College Football Playoffs and not even winning their conference, the University of South Florida entering the 2037 season as the top ranked team in the AP Poll and the favorites in Vegas to win the National Championship.
They return two of college football's most dynamic playmakers in Derek Young and Chris Wallace along with last season's passing leader, junior quarterback Joey Spence. The Bulls lose plenty of talent on defense, however, and start their season with four ranked opponents in the first five weeks and don't play another unranked opponent until the last week of the season when they travel to Orlando to play rival UCF.
Ten Best USF Players
1. TE Chris Wallace, Senior
2. S Wesley Adams, Junior
3. QB Joey Spence, Junior
4. WR Derek Young, Sophomore
5. CB Kenny Fowler, Junior
6. DE Travis Peters, Junior
7. WR Jason McDowell, Junior
8. S Mark Robinson, Junior
9. G Chris Cooker, Junior
10. WR Maurice Bennett, Sophomore
Schedule
Aug. 29 at #18 Oklahoma
Sep. 5 at #6 Alabama
Sep. 9 vs. #5 Texas
Sep. 19 vs. UCLA
Sep. 26 vs. #16 Florida (homecoming)
OPEN
Oct. 10 at #23 Clemson (night game)
Oct. 17 vs. #8 Ohio State
Oct. 24 at #2 Notre Dame (night game)
Oct. 31 vs. #3 Georgia Tech
OPEN
Nov. 14 vs. #9 Navy (night game)
Nov. 21 vs. #4 Penn State (Senior Day)
Nov. 27 at UCF (night game)
Preseason All-Americans
QB Joey Spence, Junior (first team)
TE Chris Wallace, Senior (first team)
DE Travis Peters, Junior (first team)
CB Kenny Fowler, Junior (first team)
S Wesley Adams, Junior (first team)
Preseason All-Champions Division
QB Joey Spence, Junior (first team)
TE Chris Wallace, Senior (first team)
DE Travis Peters, Junior (first team)
CB Kenny Fowler, Junior (first team)
S Wesley Adams, Junior (first team)
T James Cochran, Rs Senior (second team)
What to watch for on offense: Spence and others have gushed about the new offense with Jeremy Butler as OC, praising its simplicity and ability to match USF's best athletes in space against defenders. Perhaps the cog that will make all of it work, beyond Spence, is wide receiver Derek Young whose expected to have a bigger role in the offense as a receiver and a ball carrier. Young didn't play in the spring game but the writing has been on the wall that they intend to use more dynamically in Butler's offense.
What to watch for on defense: There might not be a better corner-safety combo than Wesley Adams and Kenny Fowler, both with world class speed and a knack for making plays. They'll likely be competing to be college football's best defender this season.
The team will be far better if... the running game is sorted out. Dionte McCarthy flashed as a true freshman but averaged just 18.7 yards per game last season, rushing the ball just 39 times compared to 30 receptions as he was used more as a receiving back more than anything else. The former receiver is the most experienced of the running backs, joined by true freshman five-stars Eric Valentine and William Sapp.
The Schedule: USF opens the season at Oklahoma and at Alabama before returning home to play Texas, UCLA and Florida. There aren't any easy-wins in this new age of college football and it's evident by the fact that this isn't even the toughest stretch of the season.
After their first bye of the season, USF travels to Clemson, at home against Ohio State, on the road against Notre Dame and then back home for Georgia Tech, Navy and Penn State. It's iron against iron, good against good, best against best.
Best offensive player: Spence and Young might have an argument for being more talented but in terms of production, it's Wallace by a wide margin. Wallace enters his senior season with 264 receptions, 3581 yards and 42 touchdowns. He needs 85 receptions, 1424 yards and eighteen touchdowns to finish off his college career as the NCAA record holder in all three category. His stats from last season where he missed four games? 100 receptions for 1247 yards and 22 touchdowns.
Best defensive player: They had very similar freshmen season but last year, Adams broke away from Mark Robinson who continues to be a very good safety. Fowler is also in the running here but it's Adams who still has ways to go in coverage but in terms of run support and playmaking, is as good as it gets at the safety position.
Key players to a successful season: USF returns three starters along the offensive line leaving center Leroy Richards and left tackle Dave Riley as the unproven commodities. Neither have much experience but Riley is a fifth-year senior while Richards showed promise last season in spot duty as a backup.
If they can sure up that offensive line, particularly Riley as Spence's blindside protect, the offense should continue clicking.
On defense, the big questions are in the middle of the defense at both linebacker and defensive tackle. USF is starting three relatively unknown players in Russ Bailey, T.J. Meeks and Michael Williams with not much depth behind them. At inside backer, it doesn't get better with Clint Parker (22 career tackles) and Quentin Williams, who hasn't played much as a fifth-year senior.
The season will be a success if...USF is in contention to win the East Region of the Champions Division. It's a tough region with Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, Penn State, Alabama, Ohio State, Navy and Clemson. All but Clemson are ranked in the top nine and the Tigers are ranked 23rd.
Key game: They're all important but the early season trip to Tuscaloosa will reveal a lot.

'The Adams Family' keeps fall camp, scrimmages alive with intensity
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles
As the dog days of summer roll into fall camp, coaches around the country are trying to ratchet up the intensity amongst their teams. For head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. and the rest of USF's coaching staff, it's the opposite when it comes to their defense, led by safety Wesley Adams.
"They're like 'The Adams Family', just a bunch of monsters and he's the worst, they all follow his lead. They don't understand light thud," Francois Sr. joked around with the media on Saturday after the team's second scrimmage, "[Adams] got a lot more leaner, a lot quicker this offseason, which was a goal of his, so I guess he's trying to show it off."
Adams is a two-time All-American and at six-foot-five and 214 pounds, he reshaped his body some more this season in order to get better in coverage. He was picked on and targeted by opposing teams last season when on shiftier tight ends and slot receivers. This time around, he looks ready for the challenge.
Other notes from fall camp and the scrimmages:
- What happens at slot receiver?
Despite their best attempts to cover it up, it's clear that Derek Young is not going to be a full-time starter in the slot and instead will line up everywhere. This does leave a potential opening at slot, where Young took most of his snaps last season.
When Young moved back outside when Bennett got hurt, it was Sam Washington who almost exclusively replaced him. When they went four receivers, Jarod Green was the fourth receiver was uber productive, averaging 20.2 yards per reception on his fourteen catches.
Similar players, Green and Washington as speedy guys from the slot with reliable hands that can not only work underneath but also make plays down the field. It's long been considered Washington's job to lose among fans but Green remains on his heels.
-
- Everett impressing coaches, teammates at fall camp despite late arrival
Dave Riley has waited five seasons to be USF's left tackle since signing with the Bulls back in 2033 but Kyle Everett has quite frankly been the team's best option at left tackle during early scrimmages.
Everett's chances of starting as a true freshman are reduced since he wasn't an early enrollee and didn't get on campus until the second summer semester. At this stage, Riley is a more physical player and USF's running game would more than likely fare better with Riley starting but from a pass protection standup, Everett's held his own throughout camp.
-
- Depth at defensive tackle remains a concern
The Bulls coaching staff feel really good about Russ Bailey, an often forgotten senior that was an All-SEC selection last year and a four-star prospect coming out of high school. They think Bailey, now up to 303 pounds from 277 in the spring, can be a dynamic disrupter in the middle similar to Ron Cox from the past four years.
Even Michael Williams and converted EDGE T.J. Meeks have shown flashes but beyond that, it's bleak at defensive tackle. Preferred walk-on Matt Langford is getting some burn during scrimmages and Will Webb has probably been the biggest disappointment of the incoming freshmen class. A four-star prospect, Webb's conditioning has been a concern since the summer and hasn't improved much.
-
- Don't forget about Wallace
He's Mr. Reliable for a reason but it's easy to forget just how good Chris Wallace is. He doesn't look that great in shorts and half-padded practices but in one of the scrimmages, Wallace led the team in receptions despite only playing half of the scrimmage and resting.
Similar to other star players, Wallace has been on a pitch count throughout the off-season and didn't even play in the spring game. He'll remind those that forgot just how dominant he can be against Oklahoma.
