USF, Butler get their quarterback in Dillard's Jet Millines
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

After what he described to 247 Sports as a "very exciting and eye opening experience" during his official visit to the University of South Florida, four-star quarterback Jet Millines has committed to the Bulls over Florida and hometown FIU.

In his first season as USF's offensive coordinator, Jeremy Butler zeroed in on Millines who wasn't the perfect fit for previous OC Doug Nussmeier's pro style offense. A legit sub-11 in the 100 meters as a track athlete, Millines is one of the more athletic quarterbacks that USF has ever landed along the lines of Jed White, Antonio Whitehead and Jay Jackson who all had varying success as USF's starting quarterbacks.

Fans will be hoping that Millines is the next Jed White who had a similar thick build and went on the win the Heisman. Millines isn't as developed of a passer that White was and certainly not where Whitehead was coming out of high school but he's a better athlete and equipped with a better arm than Jackson. Even as a blue chip prospect, Millines is more of a developmental take as ideally, he'll redshirt his freshman season behind Charlie Cooke and Jared Chavis before competing for the starting job in his third or fourth season.

USF also offered a scholarship to three-star Michigan quarterback Jacob Venckus as they rebuild their quarterback room to match Butler's offense.

Francois Sr. praises USF's grit, rewards them with extra time off during the bye week
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. met with the media on Wednesday during his typical availability but this time around, he wasn't coming from practice. The Bulls had a film session on Sunday after their comeback win over Georgia Tech and went through what Francois Sr. described as a light walkthrough on Monday and Tuesday before being given the rest of the week off, returning back on Saturday to begin prep for Navy following their bye week.

"We just played a very physical game," Francois Sr. said of the decision to go above and beyond the light practice feel of a typical bye week with a few days off, "We wanted to clean some stuff up from last week, fix some bad habits that we saw right away but there's also a balance of getting your team ready to peak at the right time with a few tough games ahead of us."

The Bulls end the season at home against Navy and Penn State before traveling to one-win UCF for the regular season finale. They've already clinched a spot in the Champions Division Final but Francois Sr. says there won't be resting of any starters and the goal is to finish the season undefeated and not only be the Champions Division Champion but also the AP Poll's champion.

Other notes from the coaches' presser:

  • Gary Prince ready for 'mental warfare' with Malcolm Francois Jr. in battle of coordinators
Francois Sr. has played down being on opposite sidelines with his son, Malcolm Francois Jr., for the first time in his coaching career as Francois Jr. is the offensive coordinator for Navy.

USF defensive coordinator Gary Prince, however, was rather candid in his excitement to go up against a former co-worker in Francois Jr.

"He was always a smart kid," Prince said of Francois Jr. as both a player and an assistant while at USF, "You could always tell he was going to be a great coach in the future so whenever you get a chance to have a bit of mental warfare with a bright offensive mind, it's something you look forward to and have to get ready for."

In their three losses, Navy's offense has scored 33, 28 and 23 points which is below their season average of 35.8 points per game. Under Francois Jr, Navy's offense has become a bit more balanced although with USF's struggle with the triple option in the first half against Georgia Tech, it'll be interesting to see if Francois Jr. decides to turn back the clock.
    -
  • Francois Sr. spoke with sophomore WR Brian Harris after social media behavior, early week absence
USF sophomore receiver Brian Harris is one of five 5-star receivers on the roster, six if you including do-it-all specialist Derek Young and seven if you throw in tight end Chris Wallace who leads the team in receptions.

Harris deleted all of his pictures on social media and was not present for USF's practice on Monday according to a report by 247 Sports. Harris was present for Tuesday's practice according to Francois Sr. who confirmed speaking to the second-year player and said that Monday's absence was 'expected'.

"There's a lot going on," said Francois Sr. of his conversation with Harris, "I'm not going to get into it too much but yeah, we see those things [social media] and the players know that so it's something I've spoke personally to him about it and at this point in the season, it's more of understanding where he's at and where were at as a team and moving forward."

The second-year player played sparingly last season, catching eleven passes as a true freshman but so far this season, he's only caught three passes.

Francois Sr. is the receiver's coach for USF and recruited Harris as well.
    -
  • Jeremy Butler wants to get things going quicker
USF offensive coordinator Jeremy Butler recognizes USF's offensive struggles last week had to do with execution, game plan specific miscues and his play calling.

"You have to hold the mirror up and the longest when you're in front of it," said Butler, "That's something you learn when you've been [calling plays] for a while is that you can always spot a reason why a play didn't work but you also have to recognize when you put players in positions where things aren't going to work."

Francois Sr. said after the game that he thought that USF's play calling on offensive 'respected Georgia Tech's speed too much' which Butler didn't necessarily agree or disagree with but did expound on wanting to be more aggressive early in the game to get Joey Spence going.
    -
  • Francois Sr. wants to get Chris Wallace the record
While many coaches would downplay it, Francois Sr. was very candid about wanting USF senior tight end Chris Wallace to break Trevor Insley's 38-year old record for most career receiving yards.

Wallace needs 401 more yards to break it with four games left on the season. He's averaging a career high 113.7 yards per game so if he still stays healthy and relatively consistent, he does not only have a good shot at breaking it, he has a good chance of doing so in the first ever Champions Division Final.

In the process of breaking the NCAA record, Wallace would also have broken USF's single-season receiving yards record which currently stands at 1356, set in 2023 by receiver William Stone. Stone's single season receptions record is also within reach as Wallace needs more 20 more receptions to break the record which might be in play during the UCF game.

He also needs seven more touchdowns to break Troy Edward's 40-year old record for most receiving touchdowns in a single season.

#8 NAVY (5-4, 4-3) | 7 | 7 | 3 | 0 || 17
#1 USF (10-0, 8-0) | 7 | 7 | 14 | 7 || 35
-----------------------------------------------

Undefeated Bulls defend their home turf against Navy
Despite dominating the game, USF found themselves at their goal-line on first and goal with Navy having a chance to tie the game late in the third quarter due to two red zone fumbles, including one that was returned 84 yards for a touchdown.

USF's defense would complete the goal-line stop, forcing the Midshipmen to settle for a field goal and sending Raymond James Stadium into a fever pitch that would guide them to a 35-17 win on Saturday night in front of the sold out crowd.

It was a poor showing for Navy offensive coordinator Malcolm Francois Jr. in his first return to his alma mater as a coach, going up against his father and USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. Navy's offense amassed just 236 yards of total offense and just 109 yards through the air, picking up just nine first downs through the process.

USF's offense was humming outside of those two turnovers with Joey Spence throwing for 421 yards and four touchdowns, spreading the ball around to seven different receivers that had at least 49 receiving yards and four receptions. Chris Wallace was the leading receiver with seven catches for 60 yards and two touchdowns while Derek Young got going early with four catches on the first drive, ending the game with six receptions for 86 yards and added 71 yards on the ground.

IMG pipeline continues for USF with Top 247 defensive tackle Rahmod Carter's commitment to the Bulls
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

The University of South Florida has landed their eleventh commitment of the 2038 recruiting class and the second player from nearby IMG Academy with the commitment of defensive tackle Rahmod Carter.

Ranked just outside the top 50, Carter took his official visit to USF this past weekend before committing to USF over Oregon. Carter looks like a high-level Champions Division defensive tackle at six-foot-five and 298 pounds with plenty of room on his frame to continue adding weight.

The Kenosha, Wisconsin native moved to IMG to play his senior season where he's been part of their rotation on the inside. Carter hasn't necessarily played up to his ranking as a top-five defensive tackle while at IMG when going up against tougher competition but the raw skills are there for Carter to eventually develop into a situational pass rusher at the next level or perhaps even an every down player if he's able to rev up his motor and take care of his conditioning issues.

On campus with Carter this past weekend was new quarterback target Jacob Venckus out of Michigan. USF is pushing for a commitment from Venckus soon as they continue to reload their quarterback room.

USF is also expecting to have five-star wide receiver Alston Marks on campus next weekend for their Senior Day. It's no coincident that local commits Joseph Moses and K.J. Waters along with quarterback Jet Millines have also announced via social media that they will also be in attendance for that game. USF is pushing extremely hard to pair Moses with Marks and the two have expressed to the coaching staff a desire to play together.

Recruiting Class in Review: Despite losses on NSD at the time, Bulls still land an elite class in 2034
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

As good as the 20234 recruiting class was, both at the time and in retrospect, it could have been even better heading into National Signing Day back in 2034. The Bulls were in play for five-star Stephen Jenkins, Daniel Green, Check Jennings and Will Green as well as Bobby Jackson, who they ended up landing but losing the rest.

When it was all said and done, how does this class grade out? The grading criteria is as follows: 1 star for non-contributor, 2 star for depth player, 3 star for contributor, 4 star for impact starter, 5 star for a star player.

2034 USF Bulls Recruiting Class
HB Bobby Jackson [HB #2]: 5'9", 187lbs | Lehigh Acres, FL | 5-star | 4.34 40-yd dash, 335 Bench Press Max, 335 Squat Max
Career Stats » 440 carries, 3212 yards, 29 touchdowns, 80 receptions, 642 yards, 4 touchdowns, 14 kick returns, 595 yards, touchdown, 31 punt returns, 468 yards, touchdown.
Analysis » If Jackson had played in a more run dominant offense and hadn't missed most of his sophomore season with an injury, we could be talking about a 4,000-yard player in just three seasons. Even with those caveats, Jackson ended up being just as good as advertised and one of USF's most electric players in recent history.
Grade » 5-star

LB Josh Anderson [ILB #2]: 6'2", 229lbs | Wiggins, MS | 5-star | 4.54 40-yd dash, 440 Bench Press Max, 605 Squat Max
Career Stats » 177 tackles, 36 tackles for loss, 3 sacks, 3 interceptions, 3 PBU, 4 FF.
Analysis » An All-American and a Butkus Award winner, Anderson was the model of consistency as a three-year starter that was also capable of making flash plays both in coverage and on the other side of the line of scrimmage.
Grade » 4-star

TE Chris Wallace [TE #3]: 6'1", 218lbs | Plantation, FL | 5-star | 4.62 40-yd dash, 420 Bench Press Max, 315 Squat Max
Career Stats » 360 receptions (school record, NCAA record), 4664 yards (school record), 64 touchdowns (school record, NCAA record)
Analysis » When it's all said and done, an argument could be made that Wallace is the best USF player of all time. He shattered the records book as a tight end at a school that's had it's fair share of star receivers and is now on his way to owning almost every NCAA record in the receiving category.
Grade » 5-star

CB Jeremy Daniels [CB #2]: 6'0", 167lbs | Bradenton, FL [IMG] | 4-star | 4.32 40-yd dash, 340 Bench Press Max, 220 Squat Max
Career Stats » 108 tackles, 9 tackles for loss, 4 interceptions, touchdown, 11 PBU, FR.
Analysis » An instant impact player as a true freshman in the slot, Daniels was one of USF's best secondary players during his three seasons at USF and was a key piece of a defense that has been very good for the past few seasons.
Grade » 4-star

LB Travis Thomas [OLB #1]: 6'0", 234lbs | Dolton, IL | 4-star | 4.58 40-yd dash, 435 Bench Press Max, 630 Squat Max
Career Stats » 102 tackles, 32 tackles for loss, 3 sacks
Analysis » Thomas narrowly misses getting his fourth star as his play this season hasn't been as consistent as it was during his junior season. He flashed his freshman season (17 tackles, 6 tackles for loss) but recorded just eight tackles as a sophomore before becoming a full-time starter last season. He's still a key piece of USF's defense this season but Clint Parker and Brian Robinson have clearly outplayed him
Grade » 3-star

S/LB Fred Harris [S #2]: 6'2", 190lbs | Port Huron, MI [IMG] | 4-star | 4.62 40-yd dash, 425 Bench Press Max, 345 Squat Max
Career Stats » 20 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, sack, interception at USF | 58 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, 0.5 sack, 2 PBU, FF
Analysis » After making the transmission to linebacker, Harris played a lit bit as a sophomore before transferring to N.C. State with former defensive coordinator Josh Butler. It's hard to grade Harris since he was just now finding his role within the team when he transferred but he certainly didn't live up to the hype of being the second ranked safety in his class
Grade » 2-star

DE Jordan Odom [DE #12]: 6'3", 247lbs | Port Charlotte, FL | 4-star | 4.62 40-yd dash, 400 Bench Press Max, 580 Squat Max
Career Stats » 18 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 2 sacks
Analysis » A complete non-factor his first three seasons, Odom got into the rotation this season as a redshirt junior and could be a full-time starter next season at defensive end.
Grade » 3-star

DT Russ Bailey [DT #10]: 6'2", 267lbs | San Antonio, TX | 4-star | 5.20 40-yd dash, 420 Bench Press Max, 645 Squat Max
Career Stats » 32 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, 9 sacks
Analysis » Bailey was buried behind some pretty impressive interior defensive linemen before cracking the rotation last season and leading it this season as USF's best interior pass rusher. His impact this season has been greatly felt, earning him that fourth star
Grade » 4-star

LB Clint Parker [OLB #27]: 6'3", 231lbs | Fort Gordon, GA | 3-star | 4.56 40-yd dash, 425 Bench Press Max, 640 Squat Max
Career Stats » 89 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, sack, 3 interceptions, 2 touchdowns, PBU, FF
Analysis » Parker was on his way to being just a depth guy after having a good freshman campaign (15 tackles, 5 tackles for loss) and then registering just seven tackles over the course of the next two seasons. He became a starter as a senior this season and has been a stud, setting the tone early in the year as USF's best linebacker with three interceptions in two games.
Grade » 4-star

Superlative Awards
Most Important Signing: Given USF's losses at National Signing Day, landing Bobby Jackson was major as it stopped the bleeding and gave them some momentum heading into the next cycle.

Most Productive Signing: Does it need to be said? Wallace by a mile, even with the studs in this class.

Biggest Bust of the Class: The only non-star in this class, Fred Harris gets the nod although he's been a very good player for NC State.

Most Untapped Potential: Harris was always going to be too limited as an athlete to be a dynamic player in this defense so the nod goes to Thomas whose also a bit of a tweener as he was perhaps more suited to be a stand-up edge guy in an odd front defense.

Biggest Steal of the Class: The only three-star of the class, it's Parker.

Biggest Lost of the Class: Plenty of five-stars to pick from with LSU's CB Chuck Jennings perhaps being the best of the bunch. Stephen Jenkins was a solid running back for Ole Miss as well while Daniel Green is a 1,000-yard receiver for Alabama this season. But losing four-star guard Eric Johnson (93 ovr) to FIU of all schools might be toughest pill to swallow
