Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Navy and North Carolina among contingent of schools that met with ANAC to discuss membership

By all accounts, the first season of the American National Athletic Conference (ANAC) has been a rousing success with record breaking viewership numbers week over week thanks in large part to the hyper competitiveness and the ability to field routine top five and top ten matchups. It hasn't been great for all programs, however.
Several programs have met with the the conference's leadership board this past Wednesday for a discussion that revolved around the agreed upon incentive based payout structure that the conference established last year heading into their inaugural season. Unlike previous conferences where the money was split evenly, in the ANAC's respective Divisions, the payout is based on end of season seeding as well as individual bowl performances.
Among the schools were reportedly Duke, Kansas, Kansas State, Kentucky, Indiana, Navy and North Carolina, all programs -- outside of Navy -- that have strong basketball programs.
Another point of discussion was the minimum athletic budget required to be part of the conference which almost stopped Navy from being one of the inaugural members. While the service academy was able to match the number, which is rumored to be in the $80 million range. The prior season, Navy's operating budget for their athletic department was just $58 million.
It remains to be seen what the final outcome is from these discussions although early reports seem to suggest that contraction might be on the horizon with a move to the Big 12 or competing as an independent in football being more profitable for those lower football programs.
Bulls continue to win, this time at home against Penn State
The atmosphere was tense in Raymond James Stadium as the undefeated South Florida Bulls fell into a 14-0 hole early in the game thanks to an interception, a long touchdown run by Penn State quarterback Bryan Myers which was then followed by a three-and-out on offense for USF and a methodical touchdown drive by Penn State.
The Nittany Lions wouldn't score another touchdown until the fourth quarter while the Bulls would go on to score seven more times in the 49-27 win on Senior Day to wrap up Champions Division play.
In likely his last home game should he declare early for the draft as expected, Joey Spence threw for 382 yards and five touchdowns with two going on deep passes to Jason McDowell who averaged 34 yards per reception and also connected with Chris Wallace twice in the endzone. Derek Young caught the other touchdown and also ran for two touchdowns in what was likely the final home for Young and McDowell as well.
Wallace, who was honored before the game along with the other eight seniors on the roster, broke his own USF single-season record for most receiving touchdowns with his 23rd and 24th touchdown of the year.

Bulls coaching staff extremely high on latest quarterback commit

Three-star Michigan quarterback Jacob Venckus has committed to the University of South Florida, the only D-1 school to offer him a scholarship.
Venckus was lightly recruited by Virginia Tech and Middle Tennessee State but they never pulled the trigger on an offer, even after Venckus had an impressive showing at one of Alabama's satellite camp this summer. Venckus was also a thrower at the Elite 11 camp although he did not participate in the actual competition where fellow recruiting class mate Jet Millines finished sixth.
The arm talent is clearly there for Venckus who is a big, strong kid but his accuracy issues were on display both at the Elite 11 camp and during his senior season where he completed just 48 percent of his passes. USF's coaching staff is confident that they'll be able to develop Venckus alongside Millines in an effort to have a stronger and deeper quarterback room going forward.
The Crystal Balls are also rolling in for five-star receiver Alston Marks with USF emerging as the favorite to land their third five-star in this recruiting class.

Navy to compete as an independent in football, ANAC announces re-seeding

The Naval Academy announced on Monday that this week's game against Penn State will be their final as a member of the ANAC as they will be competing as an independent in all sports going forward, following the lead of Air Force who is also leaving the Pac-12.
Navy was part of the Champions Division this season and scheduled to be a member of it next season as they were safe from relegation. ANAC quickly announced that due to Navy's exodus, teams will be moved up one seed, making Notre Dame safe from relegation, Oklahoma will now play in the Champions Play-In Game and previously relegated Clemson will now be part of the relegation playoffs.
ANAC also confirmed that an additional team will be added to the Rising Division to bring membership back up to 48 total teams but haven't announced yet who it will be. The early leaders are Washington, Houston and Illinois.

USF runs up the score against their bitter rival UCF
'The Bounce House' was living up to it's name as USF's first two drives ended with an interception and former USF running back Jason Gibson found the endzone for the Knights to get the party started.
After William Collins' touchdown gave UCF the 14-7 lead, the UCF faithful would be eerily quiet for the rest of the night as Chris Wallace took over the game, breaking the NCAA record for most career receiving yards as the Bulls blew out the Knights 70-24.
Wallace caught fifteen passes for 262 yards and two touchdowns, helping turn the game around in the second quarter. Wallace's domination continued in the third quarter where he broke USF's single season record for most receiving yards to surpass William Stone and later on in the quarter, Wallace would break Nevada's Trevor Insley's record for most career receiving yards.
It was an eventful night as well for Heisman hopeful Joey Spence who threw three interceptions and lost a fumble. Spence still threw for 456 yards and five touchdowns, becoming three touchdowns shy of Jeff Jones' USF record for most passing touchdowns in a single season.
Gibson, who is from Tampa and started his career at USF before transferring for his senior season, had a 24-yard run but was bottled up for the rest of the night, averaging just 3.6 yards per carry on fifteen attempts totaling 55 yards.

Bulls land another five-star receiver in South Carolina's Alston Marks

In probably the most unprobeable signing of the class, the University of South Florida has landed a commitment from five-star receiver Alston Marks out of York, South Carolina, beating out Alabama and Georgia in a recruitment that only began a few weeks ago.
The Bulls were expecting to sign just one receiver this cycle after their big hauls the last few ones and zeroed in on Tampa native Joseph Moses who committed to USF before the season and has a been a frequent visitor on campus. The Bulls coaching staff, heading into their matchup with Clemson, got word that Marks was having second thoughts about Alabama and Georgia with the five-star receiver being the one to reach out to USF's staff.
USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. met with Marks in his home that Saturday night before heading back to Tampa, scheduling Marks' eventually official visit just a few weeks later when the Bulls hosted Penn State. The Bulls managed to get a slate of their top commits to also come to that game, Senior Day, where Marks silently committed to the Bulls before announcing his commitment publicly this past Friday.
While they have similar builds and athleticism, Moses and Marks are very different players. Moses is a physical receiver with elite hands and extremely developed route running skills that even at this stage in his career would make him one of the best route runners on USF's current roster. The only question is if he is a big slot receiver or an outside guy, potentially at Z.
Marks' route running has tremendously improved but his best attribute is still being able to make plays with the ball in his hand. He's not as explosive as Dionte McCarthy but coming out of high school, they have very similar tape with most of Marks' big plays coming on screens and short routes where they get the ball to him quickly and he makes something happen after the catch. McCarthy eventually switched to running back once he got to USF and Marks will likely stay at receiver as his upside at the position is a lot higher than McCarthy's was at the same stage in their development but the drops at the high school level are a concern.
