Rebels hang tough but run out of gas against defending champs
After just one season at USF, Florida native Brady Johnson transferred to the University of Mississippi in hopes for a clearer path to playing time. In his first game against his former team, Johnson's interception of Jet Millines' pass in the first quarter helped set up a touchdown to Nate Houston to open up the game and give the Rebels the early lead.

It proved to be not enough as Millines and the USF offense eventually got it going, rushing for 239 yards on the ground along with two passing touchdowns from the sophomore quarterback in the 28-14 win against the Rebels on the road.

Millines rushed for 112 yards and true freshman Kellen Wright added a rushing touchdown but it was USF's defense that saved the day, forcing Ole Miss to settle for three field goal attempts, all of which missed. Bo Barron also threw a pick six and was additionally intercepted at the goal-line by USF's defense.

Brian Smith Jr. shocks recruiting world with Southern Miss commitment
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

Even those that didn't have Brian Smith Jr. as a lock to go to USF along with his other twin brothers likely had Florida or Miami pegged as the biggest challengers. Nobody, not even those within Southern Miss's recruiting department, thought the Eagles had a legitimate shot at landing the nation's top ranked offensive tackle.

"I'm ready to make my own legacy," Smith Jr. said during his surprise announcement, "[Southern Miss] was the first school to offer me and give me an opportunity and I want to continue this great relationship that we've built over the years."

The announcement took USF's recruiting department and coaching staff by complete surprise according to several sources as the program had been in constant communication with Brian Jr. and his two brothers, Brandon and Marcellus, as well as his father who is a former player for the Bulls. While the coaching staff had anticipated a tough battle for his commitment, they had not been made aware that an announcement could be made so soon.

It'll be interesting to see if this impacts the recruitment of Brandon and Marcellus as Brandon has long maintained that he wants to stay in-state as he does have a newborn daughter and Marcellus has previously stated in the past that the trio are not a packaged deal but that he would like to play with his brothers at the next level.

Bulls fire back from Brian Smith Jr. embarrassment with five-star signing of their own
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

USF being the butt of jokes on the recruiting circuit wasn't going to last very long after Brian Smith Jr. spurned his father's alma mater for not just another school but for Southern Miss. With one five-star offensive linemen off the board, the Bulls applied the full court press on top ranked center Kyle Jones who announced his commitment to the Bulls over Alabama, USC, Ole Miss and Notre Dame on Tuesday.

The Raleigh native is a well rounded and well polished offensive lineman with the ability to play anywhere in the interior and currently projects as a college center. There are some concerns with his frame at six-foot-one and if he's already tapped out at 284 pounds but even if that was the case, Jones plays bigger than his size and packs a powerful punch. He's also a good athlete that is capable of playing either guard spots and if it was absolutely required, he could also probably survive out there at the tackle spots if needed.

The Bulls signed three elite offensive linemen last cycle in Ray Anderson, Steve Bailey and Garrett McTaggart giving them some flexibility this cycle to maneuver around the board and even with Smith Jr. off the table, they are still a good spot to sign a solid class along the offensive line with Jones leading the way.

USF lands JUCO quarterback in hopes of retooling the quarterback room
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

Former Pinewood Prep (FL) quarterback Brandon Riley has committed to the University of South Florida over offers from Florida State, UCF and Alabama.

Riley has two years of eligibility left at the college level and is in his second season with Hutchinson Junior College, having accounted for 4,519 yards and 25 total touchdowns during his tenure with the Blue Dragons.

The second ranked junior college quarterback in this cycle, the only knock on Riley is his size at five-foot-eleven and 185 pounds as well as some academic and off the field concerns that saw him play at three different high schools and being ruled academically ineligible for his senior year at Pinewood Prep. Riley is a good athlete with a live arm that should provide some much needed depth at the position with only two scholarship players on the roster.

USF likely isn't done at the position with James White, the fifth ranked high school quarterback this cycle, still remaining a priority. The Bulls are in a good spot for White but will need to duke it out with some heavy hitters in Alabama, USC and Michigan State.

Another name to watch is quarterback Mark Cunningham, the top ranked quarterback who reportedly took an unofficial visit to USF this past summer that was kept under wraps by both parties as Cunningham has been committed to Penn State since his freshman season. A recruitment of Cunningham by USF could potentially alter their plans with White as they will likely only sign one elite arm in this cycle.

Gators get blown out once more in 56-13 routing at the hands of the Bulls
Coming into last season ranked in the top fifteen, the Florida Gators were never able to recover from the 59-16 blowout in the season opener against the South Florida Bulls and won just five games that season.

A year later, they still haven't recovered as USF had no problems taking care of the rival Gators to the tune of a 56-13 win where USF rushed for 251 yards on the ground compared to Florida's 19 rushing yards. It marked USF's third straight victory over Florida where they scored at least 56 points and held the Gators under 20 points.

First-year starting quarterback Jet Millines had a couple of rookie moments with two interceptions but was able to hook up with Maurice Bennett for the long touchdown to open the second half. Millines also rushed for 59 yards and a touchdown but it was Eric Valentine who stole the show.

Valentine carried the ball just once last week in the opener but had a 52-yard touchdown before the end of the first half and after Florida Josh Stephens' fumbled the ball on a sack, Valentine reached the end zone once more on his way to a three touchdown day, outscoring the Gators offense by himself.
