Five-star running back Dominique Shelton provides some good news to USF fans with surprise commitment
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider
Former Missouri commit and five-star running back Dominique Shelton has committed to the University of South Florida overs offers from Georgia Tech, Georgia, Oklahoma, Ohio State and others.
It was ultimately Georgia Tech and the Bulls in the end with Shelton who took an official visit to USF this past weekend to watch them lose to the Miami Hurricanes. Shelton said he still enjoyed his time there and after getting back to South Carolina on Sunday night, he called the Bulls coaching staff to pull the trigger.
"It was the right decision and the right time," Shelton told 247 Sports on Monday during his announcement, "I've built a really good relationship with [USF RB coach Richard Miller] and that whole coaching staff."
Shelton says USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. wasn't heavily involved his day-to-day recruitment prior to the official visit but that former Missouri head coach Brandon Pierre had spoken highly of Francois Sr. When Missouri fired Pierre, Shelton promptly decommitted from the Tigers but remained in contact with Pierre, who got hired at Tulsa. When Shelton expressed to Pierre he wanted to play 'big time football', Pierre put him in contact with Francois Sr.
"He just feels like that cool uncle that also gives you game and gives you discipline and structure and all of that," Shelton said of his interactions with Francois Sr. on his official visit, "I'm thinking everything's going to be cancelled [after the loss] but Sunday morning, we met up, had breakfast with his family, took us out on his boat and just showed us a good time. He's a real, genuine person and I can't wait to play with him."
A stud in his own right, Shelton's commitment is especially important considering that fellow five-star running back Jacob Wheeler, who was at the game, tweeted the laughing emoji at halftime as USF's offense was being shutout. Wheeler is the higher ranked of the two but Shelton is no slouch. He hasn't faced the top competition that Wheeler has but at six-foot, 196 pounds with verified sub 4.5 in the forty, Shelton is a formidable athlete with a good feel for the game.
He doesn't wow you in any category but he's a good, solid running back akin to former five-star running back Eric Valentine. The Bulls would love to pair him with the more explosive Wheeler, giving them an elite pairing in the backfield for years to come.

Bulls momentum on the recruiting trail continues with commitment from defensive tackle Nick Brown, linebacker Joey Franklin
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider
USF's top ranked recruiting class added some more firepower this week with four-star defensive tackle Nick Brown and three-star linebacker Joey Franklin committing to the Bulls to bring USF's class size to fourteen.
One of the top defensive tackles in the country, Brown was on campus this past weekend and posted a picture with three-star defensive tackle target Brandon Smith while at the Miami game. While Smith is certainly the wider of the two, Brown is no slouch himself at six-foot-seven and 283 pounds. The Texas native is the son of two Air Force graduates and it looked for a while that the Falcons might land his commitment but ultimately, the Bulls were able to pull it off and land an elite interior body. USC was also heavily involved in this recruitment.
Brown has some positional versatility in Trai Martinez' 3-4 defense as he could play either as a five-technique defensive end or continue to bulk up to play nose tackle where he currently plays in high school. He's not the most athletic of guys but has a decent enough first step to set the edge but where his bread is buttered is in pass rushing situations where he's able to be a disruptive force from the interior and clog up passing lanes with his length.
In Franklin, USF beat out Wake Forest and a late push from Alabama to land the commitment of a very solid three-star prospect at linebacker. Physically, Franklin stands out at six-foot-four and 229 pounds with a reported 4.58 time in the forty. He's very comparable to fellow linebacker commits Richard Smith and James Scott who are physical guys against the run that need to improve their pass coverage skills if they're going to be an every down player at the next level.

Bulls suffer humiliating 55-21 loss to Michigan State
USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr's first game as head coach of the Bulls was against Michigan State in East Lansing where the Bulls would lose 34-16 to Spartans, finishing that season with a 5-7 record.
In the 27 seasons since, USF had never lost more than four games in a season since then under Francois Sr. until Saturday night where the Spartans embarrassed the Bulls to the tune of a 55-21 defeat to hand them their fifth loss of the season.
USF hung tough for the first quarter but after a 33-yard run by Deonne White, the levies broke with Michigan State scoring 28 points in the second quarter with the team rushing for over 200 yards in the first half alone. The Spartans would end the game with 309 yards rushing and four touchdowns with quarterback Will Williams accounting for two of them and throwing two additional touchdowns. White finished the game with 209 yards on the ground on just sixteen carries, averaging 13 yards per carry.
The Bulls offense showed life at times but a red zone fumble by Alston Marks and back-to-back interceptions by Jacob Venckus to start the second half hurt the offense in a major way. Jet Millines finished the game, throwing for 196 yards and a touchdown in garbage time.
