USF running back coach Richard Miller emerging as candidate for several openings
Johnny Murray -- The Tampa Bay Times Sports Columnist
USF running back coach Richard Miller is expected to interview with the University of Akron tomorrow for their head coach opening following the retirement of Rod Carey.
Miller, a former running back for the Bulls with 28 career touchdowns, joined the staff in 2036 where he's been one of college football's best recruiters, landing five-star running back Kellen Wright last season and two five-stars in Eric Valentine and William Sapp during his first season on staff.
Miller has already interviewed for the offensive coordinator role at Notre Dame, Tennessee and Rutgers. Within coaching circles, Miller is viewed as a rising star and one of the top recruiters on the trail.
Neither offensive coordinator DeMarcus Bennett nor defensive coordinator Trai Martinez have been reported to have taken interviews for jobs elsewhere.

Bulls finish the season with Barstool Bowl loss to Texas A&M
USF's worst season since Malcolm Francois Sr's first season with the program ended with a wimper as the Texas A&M Aggies ran all over the Bulls defense and stifled their offense for two and a half quarters in the 40-28 win on Thursday.
Francois Sr. appeared to be heavily involved in the offensive play calling to the tune of 416 yards of total offense but just seven first half points, tacking on thirteen points in the final three minutes of the game to make it respectable. Neither quarterback had much success with starter Jet Millines completing fifty percent of his passes for 266 yards and two touchdowns while Jacob Venckus completed just one deep touchdown pass off a would be interception that was dropped for a touchdown.
While the Bulls struggled on offense, Texas A&M punted just three times with Kendall Hughes throwing for 132 yards and rushing for 177 yards and two touchdowns in a career day. Hughes had four rushes of over twenty yards, the same as Darrius Brown who bested Hughes with 190 yards and two touchdowns as well.

Crimson Tide reportedly interested in USF's Malcolm Francois Sr. as next head coach
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider
The University of Alabama have approached and met with representatives of USF head football coach Malcolm Francois Sr. in hopes of hiring him to replace the impending retirement of Kevin Sherrer, as first reported by The Athletic.
Sherrer was the head coach at Alabama for seventeen seasons, the bulk of which he spent as rivals with USF and Francois Sr. in the SEC and then the Champions Division. Since being in the same conference starting in 2026, the Bulls have won five conference titles with the Tide winning four.
According to the report published by The Athletic, the university and its boosters view Francois Sr. as a proven winner, program leader and capable of getting the Tide over the hump even at sixty years old and coming off a seven-win season.
Sherrer, 62, has yet to official announce his retirement but his comments after the Tide's 35-31 loss to Utah gave credence to rumors that began to circulate back in December that he'd be stepping away.
"You don't get many crack at these," Sherrer said of the loss, "I don't know how many more, if any, I'm going to get frankly so it's always a tough one but you feel for the kids the most."
With potential openings at Texas if they choose to move away from Kliff Kingsbury and the potential retirement of Ron English at Miami, where Francois Sr. is from and has a vacation home, USF will have their work cut out to keep Francois Sr.

Bulls and Francois Sr. agree to extension as Sherrer returns at Alabama
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles
The University of South Florida has extended head football coach Malcolm Francois through 2044, putting an end to any speculation that the sixty year old head coach might be interested in the Texas opening following the firing of Kliff Kingsbury.
The extension adds two more seasons to Francois Sr's currently deal which pays him $25 million per season with added academic related bonuses that can now bring his annual salary to $27 million, the highest in the nation.
Francois Sr. had been linked to a potential openings in Alabama and Miami with Kevin Sherrer and Ron English being rumored to be contemplating retirement but Sherrer signed extensions at Alabama to return for at least one more season. The Hurricanes hired former USF offensive coordinator and current SMU head coach Doug Nussmeier within hours of Francois Sr. signing his extension with USF so it is unclear if there were ever legitimate talks with the Hurricanes.
Ole Miss and Tennessee were also interested but a source close to Francois Sr. confirmed that even prior to the extension, there was no interest there on the coach's part.

Bulls restructure staff following departures, retirement of long time AHC/OL coach Jim Michalczik
Cooper Byrd -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer
The University of South Florida has announced its updated and reshuffled coaching staff which featured three new coaches, three departures and the retirement of the second longest tenured member of the staff.
Long time offensive line coach and associate head coach Jim Michalczik announced his retirement after 23 total seasons with the Bulls, including the last 21. Michalczik was replaced by University of San Diego offensive coordinator Ryan Williams, a former Florida Gator offensive linemen, to be the team's offensive line coach and running game coordinator.
USF also had to replace Richard Miller, the team's running back coach who was hired by FIU to be their next head coach. The Bulls promoted Anthony Montgomery to be the next running back coach after spending the last six seasons in the player development department. Montgomery rushed for nearly 2,000 yards and 20 touchdowns for the Bulls as a player back in the early 2030s and is joined on staff by another former Bull in Robert Holland who will serve as the team's dedicated special team's coordinator. Holland was a tight end coach at FIU but was not retained by Miller.
Miller isn't the only assistant on the move with nickels coach Derrick Brown accepting the defensive coordinator role at Ole Miss. Safeties coach Ty Maddox's contract with the Bulls completed its term and it wasn't renewed with Maddox accepting the defensive coordinator role at Texas to be their new defensive coordinator. Cornerback coach Ray Hill was promoted to Defensive Backs coach.
USF rounded out its staff with Coastal Carolina's Marco Mason to be the team's next receiver's coach. Mason was part of a national championship team for the Bulls back in 2021, catching 35 passes and three touchdowns. Mason spent three seasons on USF's staff as an off field analyst back when Malcolm Francois Jr. was the receiver's coach before following Francois Jr. to Kentucky as the team's receiver coach. When Francois Jr. was fired at Kentucky, Mason was hired at Coastal Carolina. USF has not had a dedicated receiver's coach since Francois Jr. with Francois Sr. overseeing the position during the past few seasons.
