Wisconsin DC Jerome Singleton focused on Syracuse, not head coaching opportunities
Rohan Osen -- Badger247 Senior Football Analyst

Wisconsin defense coordinator Jerome Singleton spoke to the media for the first time in months and while the veteran play caller did not answer questions relating his absence during media availabilities, he did highlight wanting to give his assistance opportunities to speak to the media and that he remains focused on helping bring a championship to Madison.

"I'm the defensive coordinator of the Wisconsin Badgers," said Singleton when asked about whether he'll be taking any interviews leading up to the Orange Bowl, "I can print out what that entails, what my responsibilities are but I'm pretty sure you all know them well. I get paid to do that and I'll continue to do exactly what those responsibilities entail and more until the day comes that I'm no longer the defensive coordinator at the University of Wisconsin."

Singleton was rumored to be a candidate for the San Diego State opening but it appears that the Aztecs are targeting UTSA head coach Greg Schiano. The UNLV opening is another that many picked Singleton for as his family moved back out to the west coast earlier this year but so far, no interviews have been scheduled. The Rebels have interviewed three candidates already, including Jacksonville State defensive coordinator Luke Olson.

Jerome Singleton named Nevada Football head coach
nevadawolfpack.com | Football

RENO, Nev. – Jerome Singleton has been named the 29th head coach of the Nevada football program, University of Nevada Director of Athletics Stephanie Rempe announced Monday.

Singleton comes to Nevada from Wisconsin, where he has served as defensive coordinator and secondary coach since 2026. Under Singleton's tutelage, the Badgers defense has been one of the best in the country for the past two seasons with the Badgers securing a spot in the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history, shutting out Syracuse this past weekend in the first round.

"Becoming the head coach at an FBS program has always been my dream. Along my journey, I've been fortunate to work with some exceptional individuals—players, coaches, and mentors—whose influence has shaped me both as a person and a coach. I owe a heartfelt thank you to my family for their unwavering support; they have been my anchor through every climb and challenge," Singleton said.

Prior to his time in Madison, Singleton served two seasons (2024-25) as the defensive coordinator at South Alabama. There, he led the Jaguars' defense to be the top defense in the Sun Belt with a 18-8 record and two bowl appearances.

Since starting as a graduate assistant at Cal in 2017, Singleton stops have included some time in the NFL as an intern with the Los Angeles Rams (2018) and won a national championship with Alabama (2020-21) as an analyst. Following his stint in the NFL and college ranks, Singleton returned to his alma mater Inglewood High School as the Sentinels head coach, leading them to an impressive 36-3 record in three seasons.

At Wisconsin, Singleton helped guide safety Taylor Medina to some of the best seasons in Badgers history. Medina won both Bednarik and Thorpe Award in his two seasons with Singleton, leading the team with at least six interceptions in both seasons. He also scored five defensive touchdowns in that time period, leading all active college football defensive players.

Singleton was a key figure in helping Wisconsin land a top-five recruiting class for the first time in program history as well as the top ranked transfer class.

Prior to his coaching career, Singleton spent two seasons as a defensive back in the NFL with the St. Louis and the eventual Los Angeles Rams. As a college athlete, he started his college career with UCLA before spending one year at Laney College, eventually coming back to the FBS level for two seasons with San Jose State where he led the team in interceptions. As a graduate transfer, he returned to Los Angeles to play for USC in Steve Sarkisian's first season as head coach of the Trojans.

He and his wife, Gayle, have two sons, Jerome Jr. and Isaiah, and a daughter, Angela.

Newly hired Nevada head coach Jerome Singleton downplays 'distractions', will coach against Michigan
Rohan Osen -- Badger247 Senior Football Analyst

The University of Nevada hired former Wisconsin defensive coordinator Jerome Singleton to be the program's next head coach and after spending the past two days in Reno, Singleton was back in Madison on Tuesday for practice with the team and was made available to the media afterwards.

Singleton confirmed head coach Charles Huff's earlier comments that the defensive gameplan against Michigan will be a collaborative effort as Singleton is juggling both responsibilities as Wisconsin's defensive play caller and the Wolf Pack's next head coach. Singleton, however, doesn't think it will be an issue.

"I don't think its a distraction at all," said Singleton, who spoke to the media for nearly thirty minutes, by far his longest interaction of the season, "We played [Michigan] less than a month ago, obviously not the outcome we wanted but they didn't score a single offensive touchdown, held them to two field goals. I expect them to make some changes, throw some wrinkles but overall, we're not splitting an atom here with a new offense and new personnel and new protection packages we have to scheme against. We know what we're going up against and they know it so it's not something that I'm going to need to spend twenty hours in a dark room by myself to figure it out. I interviewed with [Nevada] three times last week, no one knew about it and we shut out Syracuse so to me it's bullshit to think that my position or what I'm doing is going to have a negative impact on the team."

The Badgers have two more practices in Madison before they travel to California for the rest of their Rose Bowl preparation. The plan is for Singleton to be with the team for the bulk of that trip with the expectation that some of those days, he'll be in Reno. Singleton said that the logistics are still coming together but that a concept of a plan has been formed and agreed upon with Huff and Wisconsin's administration.

"They wanted me to coach this game, I want to coach this game," Singleton reiterated, "Trust me, if there was a better play caller available, they wouldn't be paying me what they're paying me. They believe that I'm the right guy for the job and I know that I'm the right guy for the job, the proof is in the stats and in our production this season as a defense. Again, I'll be with the team and when I'm not, that's understood and we have the concepts of a plan that we will iron out over the next few days and have it ready to go before we travel. I don't think it's going to be a situation where guys are asking where's coach. It'll be know, it'll be understood and we'll work through it."

The Badgers play Michigan in the Rose Bowl next week.
