Wow Bron vs Kobe did not disappoint!
Absolutely!! Glad it worked that way. Bron starting a new timeline here!

Hope to get the 2009-10 season up and running this week. Really busy last week directing a bball camp for over 100 kids here in Ireland. Had incredible coaches, almost all with international playing and coaching experience!

Welcome to the 2009 NBA Draft night, where dreams come true, GMs gamble like it's Vegas, and Knicks fans lose their minds. I’m Bill Simmons, your guide for this evening's chaos. But first, some pre-draft trade madness: Minnesota acquired the 5th pick, Etan Thomas, Darius Songaila, and Oleksiy Pecherov from Washington in exchange for Randy Foye and Mike Miller. Bold move, Minnesota. Now, let’s dive right into the draft.

4:30 PM – I’ve got my Doritos, Red Bull, and laptop ready. This is the NBA Draft night, baby! The Clippers have the number one pick. As usual, they’re in desperate need of everything. But hey, this is their year, right?

4:35 PM – With the first pick, the Los Angeles Clippers select… Steph Curry! WHAT!? Are the Clippers finally making a bold decision? I mean, it’s still the Clippers, but Curry could be the transformative player they need. He was my favorite college player of the past two years. Plus, this means we get to watch Curry and Eric Gordon in the same backcourt. That should be interesting. But wait, they passed on Blake Griffin? Griffin was the consensus top pick, the most NBA-ready player. This is an enormous shocker. The Clippers have truly gone rogue, and I kind of love it.

4:40 PM – The Grizzlies are on the clock, and they must be overjoyed. Blake Griffin, who was expected to go number one, has fallen into their laps. With the second pick, the Memphis Grizzlies select… Blake Griffin! Okay, Memphis! I see you. The most NBA-ready player in the draft goes to a team that desperately needs a star. Can’t wait to see him dunk over Beale Street. The Grizzlies probably thought they'd end up with Hasheem Thabeet, but Griffin is a massive upgrade.

4:45 PM – The Zombie Sonics take … James Harden. And thank God, I didn’t want to turn on Seattle. I really didn’t.

“He’s battled asthma since he was a child,” Scott tells us. How does Rubio drop to No. 4? How?!? I feel like I’m gonna pass out. I like Harden as a glue-character guy and he definitely has a good porn name. But considering the Zombies have to worry about Durant fleeing in a couple of years, wasn’t it in their best interests to find him an unselfish guard who’s immensely fun to play with and was put on the earth to get Durant easy baskets? Big mistake.

4:50 PM – In desperate need of a point guard, Sacramento takes … Tyreke Evans. It’s as if these GMs are trying to hurt me. I feel physically ill.

Tyreke’s weaknesses, according to our ESPN.com Draft Card: “Can be selfish … over-dribbles … lacks consistent range on his jump shot … not a super explosive leaper … poor shot selection.” They left out, “Not a natural point guard,” and “drove a getaway car during a drive-by shooting but was not charged by police.”

4:55 PM – Here come the Timberwolves with back-to-back picks. The T-Wolves are on the clock with two straight; hopefully, they’re smart enough to take Rubio, or I’m going to pull out a can of whipped cream and do whip-its until I pass out. Of course, they just flashed the résumé of new GM David Kahn. It’s one for the ages. I threw one fake job in there just for comedy’s sake. See if you can find it.

NBDL (’05-’09): Founder Southwest Basketball
MLB (’03-’04): Oregon Stadium Campaign
Indiana Pacers (’95-’04): GM (’98-’02)
Four Seasons Hotel, Orlando (’95): Valet
Proskauer Rose LLP (’93-’95): Associate
NBC Sports (’90-’95): Consultant, NBA Showtime
Portland Oregonian (’84-’89): NBA sports writer

(Translation: Anything is possible with these two picks. Anything.)

With the fifth pick, the Minnesota Timberwolves select… Ricky Rubio. The Spanish sensation! A flashy passer who can electrify crowds. This is going to be fun. I am surprised he fell this far, but maybe his contract buyout is causing teams to think twice. Its supposed to be in the $5 to 7 million range..yikes.

5:00 PM – With the sixth pick, the Minnesota Timberwolves select… Hasheem Thabeet. What!? They just took a pass first point guard in Rubio and now a center who can’t score? Minnesota, you’re confusing me. Maybe they’re planning something big. Al Jefferson and Kevin Love are already in that frontcourt. Maybe one of them get moved. I’m in “Star Trek II” mode right now. “Kaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahn!!!!!!” So stupid. I’m never trusting a guy who worked as a TV consultant, a sports writer and a stadium campaign organizer to run an NBA team again.

5:05 PM – The Warriors are next. With the seventh pick, the Golden State Warriors select… Jordan Hill. Well, that’s… underwhelming. The Warriors do love their big men projects. I’m not sold, but let’s see.

5:10 PM – The Knicks are up. I can hear the fans booing already. With the eighth pick, the New York Knicks select… Jonny Flynn. BOOM! There it is! Wait, the fans are... cheering? Flynn is a hometown hero from Syracuse, and Knicks fans feel like he’s a great fit for Mike D'Antoni’s offense. Finally, some positivity in Madison Square Garden.

5:15 PM – The Raptors are on the clock. With the ninth pick, the Toronto Raptors select… DeMar DeRozan. Finally, a pick that makes sense. DeRozan’s athleticism and potential are off the charts. Good job, Toronto. You deserve this.

5:20 PM – Wrapping up the top 10, the Bucks. With the tenth pick, the Milwaukee Bucks select… Brandon Jennings. The high school-to-Europe-to-NBA sensation. He’s got swagger for days and should inject some excitement into the Bucks' offense.

5:30 PM – Time for a breather. The first ten picks are in, and I’m buzzing. The Clippers might have just started a dynasty with Curry. Griffin in Memphis? Harden with Durant in OKC? And the Timberwolves’ bizarre back-to-back picks! This is why we love the NBA Draft.

5:35 PM – Quick recap: Curry to the Clippers is a game-changer. Griffin will be an immediate star in Memphis. Harden with Durant could be scary. The Wolves' picks are puzzling, but let’s see how it unfolds. Flynn to the Knicks is a classic Knicks move, but the fans are actually happy this time. DeRozan is a steal for Toronto, and Jennings will be a must-watch in Milwaukee.

5:40 PM – This draft has had it all: smart picks, head-scratchers, and the usual Knicks drama. Here’s to hoping these young guys live up to their potential. Until next year, this is Bill Simmons signing off. Enjoy the offseason, folks!

2009 NBA Draft Recap.

The 2009 NBA Draft was filled with surprises, headlined by the Los Angeles Clippers' selection of Stephen Curry at No. 1 overall, passing on the dominant frontcourt presence of Blake Griffin. The Memphis Grizzlies wasted no time scooping up Griffin at No. 2, while the Oklahoma City Thunder landed James Harden at No. 3, setting up a fascinating new landscape for the NBA’s next generation.

Clippers Go All-In on Curry

In a move that shocked many, the Clippers opted for Davidson’s Stephen Curry over Griffin, signaling a shift toward perimeter play. Curry’s elite shooting and playmaking make him the franchise’s new face, and the Clippers will now look to build around their young backcourt of Curry and Eric Gordon.

"Curry’s ability to stretch the floor and create for others is something we felt we needed," said Clippers GM Mike Hobbs. "He has the talent and basketball IQ to be a game-changer for this franchise."

Memphis Lands Blake Griffin at No. 2

With Curry off the board, the Grizzlies had an easy decision at No. 2, selecting Blake Griffin to pair with Marc Gasol in what could become one of the league’s most dominant frontcourts. Griffin’s athleticism and rebounding should transform Memphis into a more physical, high-flying team.

"We needed a guy who could bring energy and toughness inside," said Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins. "Blake’s going to be a star in this league."

Harden Joins Westbrook in OKC

The Thunder’s decision at No. 3 was between a backcourt mate for Russell Westbrook or a true big man. They chose the best player available, selecting James Harden, a polished shooting guard who should complement Kevin Durant as an elite scoring option.

"We loved Harden’s ability to create his own shot and make plays for others," said Thunder GM Sam Presti. "We think he fits perfectly with what we’re building."

Sacramento and Minnesota Shake Things Up

The Kings selected Tyreke Evans at No. 4, a versatile combo guard who will likely take over point guard duties in Sacramento.
The Timberwolves owned two straight picks at No. 5 and No. 6, selecting Spanish sensation Ricky Rubio and shot-blocking specialist Hasheem Thabeet. While Rubio’s NBA future remains uncertain due to buyout issues, the Wolves are banking on his long-term upside.

Golden State Makes a Surprise Pick at No. 7

Many expected Golden State to take a guard to replace Monta Ellis, but they instead went with Arizona big man Jordan Hill, a high-energy forward who can bring rebounding and defense.

Knicks Pass on Local Star, Take Jonny Flynn at No. 8

In a stunning move, the Knicks opted for Syracuse point guard Jonny Flynn of Syracuse fame. Flynn’s leadership and quickness fit should Mike D’Antoni’s system.

DeRozan, Jennings Headline Late Lottery Picks

Toronto (No. 9) selected DeMar DeRozan, a raw but athletic swingman with elite upside.

Milwaukee (No. 10) grabbed Brandon Jennings, a flashy point guard who played overseas instead of college.

Final Thoughts

The 2009 Draft saw franchises take bold risks, with the Clippers and Grizzlies looking like they have drafted bright futures. Will Curry thrive in Los Angeles? Can Memphis build a contender around Griffin? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain—this draft class will shape the NBA for years to come.

Biggest Winners:
✅ Memphis Grizzlies – Griffin is a franchise-changing talent.
✅ Oklahoma City Thunder – Harden gives them an elite scoring trio with Durant and Westbrook.
✅ Toronto Raptors – DeRozan brings much-needed athleticism.

Biggest Questions:
❓ Did the Clippers make a mistake passing on Griffin?
❓ Will Rubio ever play for Minnesota?
❓ Can Jonny Flynn justify the Knicks’ pick?

ESPN Trade Report: Bobcats Go All-In, Clippers Reset Around Curry.

BOBCATS GO ALL-IN AS JORDAN TAKES OVER

With Michael Jordan becoming the majority owner, the Charlotte Bobcats are making a win-now move by acquiring Baron Davis and Zach Randolph.

This deal pairs Davis—a former All-Star playmaker—with Gerald Wallace, while Randolph provides a 20-10 presence in the frontcourt. After missing the playoffs in 2008-09, the Bobcats are pushing for their first-ever postseason berth under head coach Larry Brown.

“We needed offensive firepower, and Baron & Zach bring that in a big way,” said Bobcats GM Rod Higgins. “We believe this move makes us a serious contender for a playoff spot.”

The Bobcats struggled to find consistent scoring last season, ranking 28th in the NBA in points per game (93.6). Davis and Randolph provide an instant boost, but there are concerns about team chemistry and salary cap flexibility with both players on expensive contracts.

CLIPPERS RESET AROUND STEPHEN CURRY

For the Clippers, this trade is about clearing the path for No. 1 overall pick Stephen Curry and reshaping their roster under new owner Steve Ballmer. By moving Davis’ massive contract ($13M per year through 2013) and the often-troublesome Randolph, L.A. brings in younger, more flexible pieces to build around their future star.

“We are excited about the versatility and leadership these players bring,” said Clippers GM Mike Hobbs. “This gives us a better-balanced team around Stephen Curry.”

🔹 Raymond Felton (25) – A solid defensive-minded PG who will either start next to Curry or serve as a strong backup.
🔹 Raja Bell (32) – A veteran 3-and-D wing who adds toughness and mentorship.
🔹 Boris Diaw (27) – A skilled, high-IQ forward who fits well with Curry’s playmaking style.
🔹 Vladimir Radmanović (28) – A stretch forward who provides depth and shooting.

With a younger and more balanced roster, the Clippers could look to make further moves before the 2010 free agency bonanza, where they are rumored to be positioning themselves for LeBron James, Chris Bosh, or Dwyane Wade.

TRADE GRADES

🔵 Bobcats: B+ – They get instant firepower but at the cost of long-term flexibility. Playoffs or bust.
🔴 Clippers: A- – Moving off Davis & Randolph’s contracts gives them a clean slate to build around Curry.

Clippers Bring in Championship Pedigree for New Era.

With Steve Ballmer entering his second year as owner, the Los Angeles Clippers have made significant changes to their front office, coaching staff, and roster. After drafting Stephen Curry No. 1 overall, the Clippers continued their aggressive offseason by signing several veteran free agents to one-year deals, many of whom have ties to the San Antonio Spurs' championship culture.

🔹 Clippers’ Key Offseason Moves:

✅ New Head Coach: Mike Budenholzer (Hired in May 2009)
✅ Assistant Coach: David Fizdale (Player development specialist)

Signed on One-Year Deals:

Jacque Vaughn (PG, 34 years old) – Veteran floor general, former Spurs backup to Tony Parker.
Roger Mason Jr. (SG, 28 years old) – Sharpshooter who thrived in San Antonio’s system.
Malik Rose (PF, 34 years old) – Two-time NBA champion (Spurs 1999, 2003), adds toughness.
Stromile Swift (PF/C, 30 years old) – Athletic big man, brings depth to the frontcourt.

Ricky Davis Opts Into Player Option ($2.5M for 2009-10)

Clippers GM Mike Hobbs on the Offseason

“We’re building a team with smart, high-character veterans who understand winning,” said GM Mike Hobbs. “With Mike Budenholzer leading the way, we wanted players who fit his system and can help mentor our young core.”

The Clippers now have a blend of youth and experience, with Curry, Eric Gordon, and Al Thornton leading the youth movement, while the new signings provide leadership, defense, and playoff experience.

Breaking Down the Additions

📌 Jacque Vaughn – A steady veteran point guard who can guide Curry through his rookie season.

📌 Roger Mason Jr. – Three-point specialist (42% from deep in 2008-09) who can space the floor for Curry.

📌 Malik Rose – Championship experience & toughness, an ideal locker-room presence.

📌 Stromile Swift – A versatile rim-runner who adds size and athleticism to the second unit.

What’s Next for the Clippers?

With a solid mix of veterans and young talent, the Clippers appear poised for a more competitive season. However, their long-term goal is still the 2010 free agency class, where they hope to attract a franchise-altering superstar.
