Looks like KD bullied the crap out of Zion. :lbjooo:

Heroic performance for Wemby there though playing every minute he could in the second half. Hopefully the rest of the team can step up!

Oh damn. That front court got dealt with. Zion really that washed? Or that's just how he functions in your offense?

Spurs Game 1 Overreaction: How playable is Zion Williamson in this series?
When the San Antonio Spurs were making their run to crawl back into the game, a few things were constant. Lonzo Ball -- and his ability to get to the paint at will -- was on the court, Ben Simmons -- and his unwillingness to look for his own shot -- was on the court and Zion Williamson -- who doesn't have a natural matchup as a defender -- was not.

Ball had the second highest plus-minus on the Spurs while Williamson and Simmons had the second lowest plus-minus on their respective teams. While the conversation has already began on if Simmons will be playable in this series, their side by side comparisons begs the question whether or not Williamson, and his $39.45 million salary this year, is playable against Phoenix?

Williamson primarily guarded Grayson Allen, who finished the game with 21 points and five rebounds and on offense, Kevin Durant drew the coverage. Williamson was effective with the ball in his hand, scoring all three field goal attempts and had six assists. The struggle, however, was on the boards where the Spurs struggled when Victor Wembanyama wasn't on the court as Durant outrebounded Williamson and Jusuf Nurkic was a monster on the board with five offensive rebounds, as was backup big Zeke Nnaji.

Jeremy Sochan offers less offensively, just two points on two shots in 23 minutes, but did finish with nine rebounds and would allow the Spurs to be able to switch pretty much across the board as Sochan can equally guard Durant, Nurkic and at least be serviceable against Devin Booker and Bradley Beal with Allen not being a problem either for the defensive-minded Sochan.

There's also the option to attack Phoenix's small ball with a similar lineup, opting to go with either Tre Johnson or Ball at the three and bumping Stephon Castle, who guarded Durant anyway for most of the game, to the four. Playing Ball next to Fox would hinder his best asset, which is being the primarily ball handler but defensively, it would give the Spurs four elite defenders on the court in Ball, Castle, Wembanyama and Devin Cassell. Offensively, Johnson might be the better move and while he's not as good of a defender as Ball, he is a more natural fit offensively and he should be able to do much better on Allen than Williamson did.

The other option, and perhaps the most likely one given that this team won sixty-five games, is to believe that San Antonio's depth and talent, provided that Wembanyama doesn't get into foul trouble, will ultimately win out. The Spurs will be more aggressive in feeding Williamson the ball and forcing Durant to defend him on the inside and pick up fouls. Durant was on three fouls midway through the third quarter and did not pick up another foul the rest of the way. This also coincided with Williamson playing less and less as the Spurs were getting killed on the board and opted to bring in Sochan.

The Spurs acquisition of Williamson was pivotal in taking them from a play-in team to the West's top seed but one game into the new Big Three's first playoff appearance, questions are already being raised about their fit. How will they answer them?

San Antonio Spurs vs. Phoenix Suns
Game 2 Overreaction

Despite splitting the series on the road, the Phoenix Suns might have just revealed a fatal flow to the Spurs
Image
Devin Booker and Kevin Durant combined for twenty-seven of the Phoenix Suns' 31 points in the first quarter as the San Antonio Spurs held a narrow three-point lead, down 1-0 in the series and seemingly their playoff dreams already on the brink.

Booker would go scoreless in the second quarter and Durant would shoot just 1-of-7 from the field as the Spurs kept building on their lead with 21 assists in the first half compared to twelve assists. The Suns' iso-centric offense that had infuriated San Antonio's offense with their ability to make tough shots was now coming up against a mathematic equation it couldn't fadeaway jumper its way out of.

The Spurs would finish the game with a 20-point edge in fast break points, 24-point edge in bench points and a 30-point edge inside the paint, literally running the veteran Suns out of Frost Bank Arena.

De'Aron Fox established the tone with ten first quarter points to help hold off Booker and Durant going insane in the first quarter and once the Spurs put the bigger Devin Vassell on Booker instead of Fox, it slowed Booker down who eventually found his groove in the second half, scoring twelve points in the second half on 6-of-14 shooting but for every 15 to 20 second possession that Booker or Durant would have, dribbling the shot and game clock down, the Spurs would then push the tempo and get an easier, higher percentage shot in less time.

Welcome to the Victor Wembanyama Show
Wemby's foul trouble was the story of game one but in game two, the potential MVP introduced himself to the basketball world in a grand way with thirty-four points and twenty-one rebounds with two blocks and six threes. Phoenix's rebounding edge in the first game was completely nullified by Wemby's presence, snagging down just two offensive rebounds in the first half.

The Suns don't have anyone that can guard Wemby but it's surely not Jusuf Nurkic who can't stay in front of Wemby off the dribble and when off the ball, Wemby has no problems losing him and creating space to set up his three-point shot.

Storyline to watch in Game 3
Who from the 'other guys' will have the biggest game? In Game One, Grayson Allen had twenty-one points and Zeke Nnaji had twelve points, four rebounds, three steals and three threes in just twenty-one minutes off the bench. In Game Two, it was San Antonio's Tre Johnson and Lonzo Ball that were the superior role players with twenty-three points for Johnson and eighteen for Ball. A lethal shooter with a quick first step, Johnson is yet another example of a player that the Suns truly don't have an answer for when attacking the rim. The Suns will need to be able to keep up the offensive output if San Antonio keeps attacking the rim and it can't all be on Booker and Durant.
