Spurs eliminate Devin Booker, Kevin Durant as Wemby and Fox shine in playoff debut
AP April 27, 2026

SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- The pairing of Victor Wembanyama and who would be his superstar running mate has been the question that the San Antonio Spurs have had to answer since winning the lottery and Wemby's stellar rookie season that proved that paired with the right co-star, the Spurs might be on a fast track back to the top of the sport. At first, it looked like it might be Devin Vassell who averaged 19.5 points per game during Wemby's rookie year. Stephon Castle was bandied about as he showed flashes as the fourth overall pick in Wemby's second season and then the Spurs traded for Zion Williamson in the offseason after failing to make it through the Play-In Tournament. Surely, it'd be Zion and for a moment it was until the Spurs traded for De'Aaron Fox.

Fox has proven to the perfect running mate for Wemby thus far, averaging 28.6 points per game in the playoffs on sixty-four percent shooting, being practically unguardable as the Spurs gentlemen swept the Phoenix Suns out of the playoffs to secure the pair's first of what will hopefully be many playoff series. With Fox taking on the scoring load, Wemby was his most effective on defense with three blocks and seventeen rebounds, both leading the league.

The former All-Star had been averaging 17.4 points per game since the All-Star break with many wondering if Fox was suited for that Robin role only to break out the Batmobile and carrying the brunt of San Antonio's offense in pivotal moments against Phoenix, helping turn a series around that started on shaky ground with the the Suns winning that first game. Fox would score 24, 38 18 and 30 points in three consecutive wins for the Spurs, including double-digit assists in two of those games. In the closeout game, Fox had a +/- of nineteen in the Spurs blowout win over Phoenix.

With the Minnesota Timberwolves bouncing out Fox's former team in the first round, Fox will get another premier matchup against another fellow guard in Anthony Edwards. If he rises to the occasion once more, it not only bodes well for the Spurs chance of making the Western Conference Finals for the first time in a decade but also establishing Fox as one of the league's not just top point guards but best players.

Projected starting lineups
San Antonio Spurs: De'Aaron Fox - Devin Vassell - Stephon Castle - Zion Williamson - Victor Wembanyama
Minnesota Timberwolves: Robert Dillingham - Anthony Edwards - Jaden McDaniels - Julius Randle - Day'Ron Sharpe

Player to watch
Robert Dillingham, Minnesota Timberwolves --The Spurs had a chance to draft Dillingham not once but twice in the 2024 NBA Draft and even after selecting Stephon Castle over him, the Spurs had another opportunity to draft him with the eight overall pick and they did, only to draft him for a future first round pick that wasn't even in high school at the time. After an essential redshirt year where he didn't play much as a rookie, Dillingham has been the Wolves starting point guard this season, averaging seventeen points per game on forty three percent shooting and his counting stats have been on par or better than Castle. While Castle will likely draw the matchup on Edwards, this is a great chance for Dillingham to perhaps show San Antonio that they kept the wrong player in that draft.

Storyline to watch
Can Anthony Edwards' individual brilliance come through? Minnesota will have the best player on the floor in this series in Edwards but the next four best players might all be Spurs in Wemby, Fox, Williamson and then a toss up between Vassell and Randle, depending how much you value defense. Devin Booker was the best player in San Antonio's previous series and all it did was get him one win as the Spurs' totality of players just overwhelmed them in the end. Can Edwards, unlike Booker, outlast the onslaught that is bound to come Minnesota's way?

Prediction
There's a lot of similarities in this series and the last one for the Spurs with Minnesota having a really good three-man punch on offense in Edwards, Randle and Dillingham while the Spurs have better depth. Minnesota's bench is better though as Donte Divincenzo and Malik Monk are capable scorers off the bench and Steven Adams can provide some problems on the board that Phoenix wasn't able to take advantage of when Wemby was off the court. This should be a fun series but ultimately, it's tough to pick a team whose third best player is Randle when San Antonio's is Williamson. Pick: San Antonio 4, Minnesota 3

I think they're good enough to win a few games, especially since their bench is a lot better than Phoenix. Pretty much any time Book wasn't on the court, we were fine against the Suns. Donte and Monk have the ability to get a hot and they don't have a Ben Simmons where I can just sag off completely and pack the paint

Game 1 Overreaction: Victor Wembanyama seizes the moment as Anthony Edwards shrinks in Game 1
AP May 5th, 2026

SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama attempted nine three pointers in the most important game of his young career thus far, scoring twenty one points in the closeout win over the Phoenix Suns to earn his first playoff series victory. Wembanyama would shoot ten threes in just the first quarter of his highly anticipated series opener against Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves, breaking the franchise record with nine made threes in the Spurs' dominant 120-100 win over Minnesota.

While Wemby shined in the first half, Edwards shrunk to an ant, scoring just five points and went scoreless in the second quarter. Edwards would attempt just two field goals in the third quarter before scoring the bulk of his points in the fourth quarter (11) when the game was already out of hand.

It wasn't the most efficient outing for Wemby, who shot under forty percent in the game and a brutal 3-of-14 in the second half, with only one of his field goal attempts coming inside the paint but his ultra aggressiveness set the tone for the Spurs' offensive output, scoring twenty threes as the Spurs' starters outscored Minnesota's 93 to 49. Wemby also pulled down 24 boards and blocked four shots, serving as the anchor for a Spurs' defense that held Minnesota to just 43 percent from the field and 38 points in the paint.

While Edwards' is a safe bet to be more aggressive in subsequent games, the Wolves problems offensively are greater than their star players. The Spurs as a unit match up well with Minnesota defensively with De'Aaron Fox matching up perfectly with the shifty Robert Dillingham, Stephon Castle able to render Jaden McDaniels a non-factor offensively while Zion Williamson, the usual target for opponents, draws a favorable matchup against Julius Randle due to their similar body types and Randle being unable to bully Williamson like he does other smaller forwards. Devin Vassell was extremely effective against Edwards and Minnesota's lack of a threat at center on the offensive end allows Wembanyama to roam as a help defender.

Captain Canada might be right. This might be Spurs in 5.

When in doubt, trust the Captain. Wemby made Gobert of no consequence in Game 1 :obama:
