April 1st, 2025 - LaLiga Update
Valladolid are in pole position to be in Europe next year.
Cesc Fàbregas’s Real Valladolid are discovering the highs and lows of fighting at the top end of La Liga. After sitting inside the top four for much of the winter, a 3-1 defeat to Real Sociedad saw the Basques leapfrog Valladolid into 4th place. As of April 1st, La Real sit on 55 points from 29 matches, with Valladolid close behind on 53 points from 29 games — still firmly in the race for Europe.
Despite the setback, there is plenty of optimism. Valladolid’s attack remains one of the most prolific in the league with 67 goals scored, led by Juan Latasa’s 16 strikes in 27 games, which places him joint-fourth in the scoring charts. On the wings, Raúl Moro has been La Liga’s most creative player, topping the assist charts with 13, while Kenedy has chipped in with 9 assists in just 16 appearances.
Defensively, Valladolid have been more open, conceding 50 goals, but Álvaro Aceves continues to impress in goal with 6 clean sheets in 18 appearances — a sign of the trust Fabregas is placing in young talent.
With Madrid, Barça, and Atleti clear at the top, Valladolid’s battle is with Sociedad, Betis, and Villarreal for the European spots. Even if the Champions League proves just out of reach, a place in the Europa Conference League looks very realistic, which would mark a huge step forward for a club that has embraced Fàbregas’s possession-heavy, attacking style.
The run-in promises tension, but also excitement. For a fanbase hungry for identity and progress, Valladolid’s 2024–25 season already feels like a breakthrough.
