Georgia's George Mayo Claims 2030 Heisman - Coastal Carolina's Walt Reyna Makes His Own History

Image

George Mayo capped off his remarkable season with the ultimate prize in college football. The Georgia wide receiver, fresh off a 171-yard, three-touchdown showcase in the SEC Championship, was officially named the 2030 Heisman Memorial Trophy winner. His performance not only powered the Bulldogs to another conference crown and the No. 1 seed in the upcoming playoff, it sealed his status as the nation’s most outstanding player.

In many ways, the timing was decisive. Quarterback Garrison Lemon, Mayo’s teammate and primary competition for the award, struggled in the title game with two interceptions and a lost fumble. Mayo’s dominance—and Lemon’s miscues—shifted the spotlight squarely onto the receiver.

The win adds Mayo to an astounding list of WRs to claim the Heisman in the last few years joining Jeremiah Smith and Devonta Smith, and his resume this season also included the Maxwell, Walter Camp, and Biletnikoff Awards. Ohio State quarterback Coco Magnuson finished third in the voting after leading the Buckeyes to a Big Ten title.

But even Mayo’s triumph was overshadowed in some circles by another story of historic proportions. Coastal Carolina linebacker Walt Reyna did the unthinkable, completing an unprecedented sweep of the Chuck Bednarik, Bronko Nagurski, and Dick Butkus awards—for the fourth consecutive year.

It’s a feat that may never be matched again. No player had ever even won any of those awards three times, let alone in back-to-back-to-back-to-back fashion. Reyna, a four-year starter who anchored the Chanticleers’ 2028 national championship defense, has built a legacy defined by dominance.

“This type of consistency and dominance is unheard of,” said former Alabama coach Nick Saban. “I’ve never seen someone take the field as a freshman and control the game the way he has, year after year. It’s astounding.”

Head coach Kade Vaughn echoed that sentiment, emphasizing not just the accolades but Reyna’s impact on Coastal’s program. “Words can’t express how much he’s meant to this team. He’s been the rock of our defense, through the highs and the doubts. To sustain that level for four years—it’s truly remarkable.”

Coastal added another honor to its trophy case as tight end Percy LaRue captured the John Mackey Award, a breakthrough moment after fellow Chanticleer tight end Trishtin Glass had finished as runner-up three years in a row.

Meredith Leads 4th Q Comeback To Down USC Despite Velasco's 510 Yards

The nation saw why HC Kade Vaughn is so high on Fredrick Meredith after the true freshman shook off a shaky start to deliver the go-ahead touchdown in the 4th Q as Coastal edged the USC Trojans 34-27 to finish another 10 win season.

San Diego, CA. - The story heading into the Holiday Bowl was all about who wasn’t playing for Coastal Carolina. With several starters sitting out to prepare for their futures, it looked like the Chanticleers were walking into a mismatch against a USC team that had convinced every one of its stars to suit up for one final ride.

It didn’t matter.

Behind true freshman quarterback Fredrick Meredith and a defense that refused to back down, Coastal shocked the Trojans 34–27 in Snapdragon Stadium, sending Conway into the offseason with more hope than questions.

USC quarterback Santiago Velasco and wideout Darnell Beckham (yes, that Beckham family) gave the home fans their show. Velasco threw for a career-high 510 yards, while Beckham racked up 209 yards and a long touchdown. But in the end, it was Coastal’s resilience that defined the night as they held Velasco to just 140 yards in the 2nd half and kept the Trojans out of the endzone.

The opening was sloppy for both quarterbacks. Velasco’s very first completion turned into a fumble forced by safety AJ Dwumfour. On the next snap, Meredith gave it right back with an interception. “Simply a bad read,” the freshman admitted afterward. “The mike faked to the flat and dropped back. He was in better position to catch it than Perc [LaRue].”

After trading mistakes, Coastal found its footing with a 14–3 lead thanks to a Floyd Priest 50-yard burst. But USC responded with a 21–0 run, capped by Beckham’s 63-yard strike, and looked to have control up 24–14 late in the half.

That’s when Meredith answered. The freshman drove the Chants 75 yards in just 37 seconds, highlighted by a Tavares Tinker toe-tap on the sideline and capped by a touchdown to Tinker with 1:02 left. Suddenly, it was 24–21 at the break, and Coastal wasn’t going away.

From there, the script flipped. Coastal’s offense slowed the pace with a field goal drive, while the defense forced USC into empty yardage. When the Trojans briefly regained a 27–24 lead, Meredith responded with the defining series of the night: a 10-play march that included a fourth-down conversion to Bernie Bender and a gutsy scramble on third down. Facing another fourth-and-5, head coach Kade Vaughn put the ball in the hands of his true freshman.

“You win it or you lose it, kid,” Vaughn recalled telling him. “Either way, you make the call.”

Meredith delivered. He dropped a dime over linebacker Marco Alzalone—the same defender who baited him into the first-half pick—for the go-ahead touchdown. Coastal led 31–27 with five minutes left.

The defense took it from there. Despite marching within striking distance thanks to another 30 yard reception by Beckham, Dwumfour forced his second fumble of the game near the goal line, crushing USC’s hopes of a quick answer.

Meredith and Floyd Priest engineered a four minute and 30 second long drive after the fumble, whittling the clock to just 30 seconds before kicking the 49 yard field goal to make it a touchdown lead.

With just 29 seconds left USC needed a quick score. Instead Jason Ivory, a freshman defensive end seeing his first real action, sealed it with a sack on Velasco as the Trojans watched the final seconds drain away as the receivers rushed back to the line.

“This is the kind of game you look back on and say, that’s where it started,” Vaughn said. “We let the young guys prove they belonged, and they delivered.”

The one veteran star who didn’t sit out was linebacker Walt Reyna, the four-time Bednarik, Nagurski, and Butkus Award winner. Asked why he played, Reyna didn’t hesitate.

“I’ve felt like Yoda all year—showing the guys where to be, what to look for,” Reyna joked. “It wouldn’t feel right leaving them one game short of finishing the season. And putting on that Coastal jersey one last time? Wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

Vaughn quickly chimed in: “That’s why he embodies what Coastal football is. He lived the standard and set it every day.”

Meredith finished 26-of-37 for 235 yards and three touchdowns, shaking off his rocky start with a near-flawless second half (16-of-20). For a team facing plenty of offseason questions, the most important answer may already be on the roster.

The freshman QB looks ready to lead the next generation of Chanticleers.

Velasco appeared to be engineering the go-ahead touchdown drive, but Malik Turner coughed up the rock near the goal line and squandered the last real threat.

OBJ's cousin Darnell Beckham put on a show befitting his family name with 209 yards and this 63 yard touchdown grab.

I mean USC was a solid team and i sat my whole first team offense essentially so

It felt weird for it to be a restart year because on paper, outside of QB obviously, this was the best team we've fielded in six years. The defensive struggles turned it into a rough season, but it felt like we figured it out in the 2nd half. Obviously USC torched us, but Velasco is also a 94 overall Qb so hey

ACC better be on notice next year. We want our lick back
