So yeah, the whole topic is kinda contradictory and messy, and personally I’m more of a “don’t put your heroes on a pedestal” and “keep expectations realistic” than “don’t have them” kind of guy but it’s a personal preference kind of thing

There’s a certain amount of that that’s unavoidable for frankly anyone (at least in their personal lives) and public figures, who inherently have at least some amount of parasocial relationships, will inevitably “punch above their weight” in terms of that kind of influence

they can try to be if they want but we shouldnt expect them to be just because they can throw or catch etc a ball

But that also ignores the irony in, in fact, using said statement as a rule of thumb
