My Girls

“Yo, Snow. You headed out?” LeBron asked me as he and a couple other guys were leaving the hotel. They looked like they were dressed to hit up a few after parties.

I was standing near the back of the hotel lobby with a carry-on bag dressed in black cargo pants and a blue Moncler logo t-shirt. I was waiting for the car service to take me to the airport.

“Yeah, man. Got a few days off, so I’m headed to the city to check on my girls.”

“I know the feeling, man. Being a Girl Dad hits different. So, you flying from Florida to New York for a couple days? When’s the next game?”

“We actually play Boston right after, so I’m just gonna meet the team in Bean Town. I’ll be in New York until the twenty-fourth.”

“Clutch.”

I got a text saying that my driver was pulling up to the hotel. I soon saw headlights on a black SUV headed my way.

“That’s my ride, man. I gotta go. I’ll hit you up later. Enjoy the night, since you couldn’t enjoy the game.”

He laughed. “You ain’t shit, man. Stole that win from us tonight.”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah. And you was starting to cook too. Sorry, Bro.”

I dapped him up before meeting the driver and disappearing into the Orlando night.

I sent Eva a text when I made it to the airport letting her know that I should be in New York around 1:30am. She said that she should be up feeding Wynter around that time, so I could just head over to the apartment. I told her I would check in again when the plane landed and if she didn’t answer I would just get a hotel room and see them for breakfast. She insisted she would be awake though.

So here I am, at 1:27 in the morning, standing outside of her apartment.

She opened the door before I could even knock with a wide awake Wynter in her arms.

“Cutting it close again tonight, huh?” She said, smirking at me.

“You watched the game.”

“Of course we watched the game. Wynter wanted to.” She walked away from the door and left it open so that I could come in. I followed them into the kitchen.

“Of course, my baby girl wanted to see her daddy.” I said as I tickled Wynter’s foot. “I’m going to go shower real quick, is that cool?”

“Hey, it’s your place. You know where everything is.”

“Why you gotta be like that?”

“I’m just stating the facts, Antonio.”

“Tell Mama not to be that way, Wynter. Daddy had a long weekend kissing corporate ass and now I just wanna relax with my best girls.”

“Hurry up and take your shower then. I’m not going to keep her awake just for you.”

“Bet.” I gave her a quick kiss on the cheek and went to the bathroom.

Twenty minutes later I was showered and watching highlights on ESPN with a slice from Stromboli Pizza in one hand and Wynter in the other.

“You see that dunk, Wynter? Huh? Daddy was ballin’ out tonight.” I said. She just yawned. “So, you’re telling me you’re not impressed?”

“She’s telling you that she is sleepy,” Eva said, sitting on the couch next to me. She reached for the baby. I finished the last bite of my pizza and reached for another. “Give her here.”

She extended her arms to me for the baby.

“I’m getting my Wynter cuddles.” I leaned back into her arms instead. “Just like hold us both. Like a Russian nesting doll.”

“Boy, you are a mess.”

“This is nice, Eva.”

“What?”

“This. Me, you, the baby. This is nice.”

“We’re not gonna talk about this at three in the morning, Antonio.”

“Ain’t nothing to talk about. Just saying it was nice. I ain’t trying to press you.” I looked down at Wynter falling asleep on my chest. “Just saying I like spending time with my girls is all.”

“I mean, it’s not the worst thing in the world. Let me get a bite of that.” I held up my slice of pizza over my shoulder.

“You could just get your own, you know?”

“Yours tastes better.” She kissed my cheek. “And can we please change this channel? I watched the game, you played the game. Do we have to keep reliving it?”

“Wynter, your mama is a hater.” I picked up the remote and started channel surfing. “We not watching no Lifetime shit either.”
