Is #2 The Best Spot In This Years Draft?

Image

The Utah Jazz enter the 2026 NBA Draft in an enviable position—and a precarious one. Fresh off Ace Bailey's Rookie of the Year campaign, the franchise holds the No. 2 overall pick after Oklahoma City won the lottery. They also control the eigth selection, giving them two premium opportunities to shape the future around their budding star.

But draft position alone doesn't guarantee success. The Jazz must navigate a minefield of roster construction questions: Do they take the best player available, even if it creates positional redundancy? Or do they prioritize fit, banking on complementary pieces to maximize Bailey's ceiling?

The stakes are high. With Isaiah Collier, Keyonte George, and Anthony Black already occupying guard spots, and Bailey established as the primary wing option, Utah's front office can't afford to misread the room. Here's a breakdown of their three main options at No. 2, and what each selection would mean for the franchise's trajectory.

Darryn Peterson, Kansas
Position: Combo Guard | Age: 19

In a vacuum, Darryn Peterson might be the most purely talented player on Utah's board. The 6-foot-5 combo guard combines explosive athleticism with advanced shot creation, the kind of two-way ceiling that keeps general managers up at night. His competitive fire and defensive potential suggest a player who could anchor a contender's backcourt for a decade.

"Elite talent, terrible fit. Unless you're planning to trade one of your guards, this creates a roster construction nightmare despite Peterson's ceiling."

According to the same source, Peterson is the favored target of the Thunder with their #1 overall pick, making the Peterson discussion more of a moot point for the Jazz.

AJ Dybantsa, BYU
Position: Wing/Forward | Age: 18

If you're a believer in drafting the best player available regardless of fit, AJ Dybantsa is your guy. The generational prospect checks every box: rare combination of size, skill, and athleticism; versatile scoring from all three levels; high basketball IQ; defensive versatility. He projects as a franchise cornerstone, the kind of player teams tank for.

He's also essentially the same player as Ace Bailey, albeit with more athleticism.

This is where draft philosophy meets reality. Yes, you can theoretically play two elite wing scorers together—the NBA has seen it work before. But both Dybantsa and Bailey are primary options by nature, players who need the ball in their hands to unlock their full offensive repertoire. Can you really afford to split development opportunities between two franchise-caliber wings?

"This is the 'best player available' pick, but the Jazz just watched Bailey shoot his way to Rookie of the Year. Can you really afford to have two developing alpha wing prospects?"

Cameron Boozer, Duke
Position: Power Forward | Age: 18

Sometimes the best move isn't the flashiest one. Cameron Boozer won't wow you with Dybantsa's athleticism or Peterson's burst. What he will do is make your team better—immediately and sustainably.

The son of former Jazz forward Carlos Boozer, Cameron represents everything Utah needs right now: a stretch four who can space the floor, a high-IQ passer who doesn't dominate possessions, and a fundamentally sound player who complements rather than competes with Ace Bailey. He's not the highest ceiling prospect in this draft. But in the context of what the Jazz are building, he might be the most valuable.

This is roster construction 101: You already have your cornerstone in Bailey. Now you need players who maximize his effectiveness, not vie for his touches. Boozer fills the Jazz's glaring need at power forward while providing the floor spacing and secondary playmaking that will take pressure off their young star.

"Yes, Dybantsa might be the 'better' player in a vacuum, but Boozer is the player who makes your team better immediately and long-term."

The Verdict?

Here's the uncomfortable truth about the NBA: Raw talent doesn't guarantee success. Roster construction matters as much as individual ability. You can have the three most talented players in a draft class and still build a losing team if they don't fit together.

The Jazz aren't searching for their franchise player—they already found him in Ace Bailey. What they need now is players who complement him, not compete with him. That's where Cameron Boozer separates from the pack.

Yes, AJ Dybantsa has a higher theoretical ceiling. Yes, Darryn Peterson is a more explosive athlete. But neither addresses Utah's actual needs the way Boozer does. The Jazz need floor spacing from the four spot. They need a secondary playmaker who can facilitate without dominating the ball. They need a player who won't create roster logjams or force uncomfortable position changes.

Cameron Boozer checks all those boxes while bringing organizational ties and immediate impact. He won't make highlight reels the way Dybantsa might, but he'll make Bailey better—and that's the entire point of this pick.

The best player available isn't always the best pick. Sometimes it's the player who fits your timeline, your roster, and your organizational identity. For the Utah Jazz in 2026, that player is Cameron Boozer.

Before the Jazz can make a decision that could ultimately make or break the next five years of the franchise, they must await the Oklahoma City Thunder's pick.

They may make the choice simple for the Jazz, or complicate the entire mess. If Dybanasta goes #1, the choice is clear for the Jazz.

But if the BYU product is still there at #2? All bets are off.

It would have been a tough choice. Boozer has been my plan the whole time, but OKC made it easy on us :obama:

Oklahoma City Thunder Select F AJ Dybantsa 1st Overall

Image
The rich keep on getting richer after the Oklahoma City Thunder added a potential generational player in AJ Dybantsa to pair with two time MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren, among others.

"The fit isn't great, but that doesn't matter," said Jeremy Woo on ESPN's coverage, "The benefit for AJ here is he is going into a perfect situation. He can play behind one of the premier scorers in our league, and learn. Come along at his own pace, knowing that the fate of the franchise doesn't rest on his shoulders."

When asked after the selection where he felt he fit on the current Thunder squad, Dybantsa was candid. "To be honest, I haven't looked at it that deep yet. I didn't know who the pick was going to be until they announced it, they kept it close. But I honestly don't care where I fit, I'm just excited to be competing for championships from year one."

The Utah Jazz are now on the clock with the 2nd pick.

Utah Jazz Select PF Cameron Boozer 2nd Overall

Image

With his father, mother, and brother watching from the green room, Cameron Boozer heard his name called by the same franchise where his father had been a cornerstone during some of the Utah Jazz's most successful years.

After embracing his family, Boozer made his way to the stage, dapped up Adam Silver, and held up his own Jazz jersey. Same name on the back, new legacy ahead.

In a post-selection interview with Malika Andrews, Boozer reflected on the full-circle moment:

"I didn't plan in high school to follow my dad's path. Obviously, Utah wasn't the only team he played for, but he had his best years here and built a real connection to this city. So did I—this is where I was born. When things started lining up, I just hoped I'd get this opportunity. Now I want to make this city proud."

Jeremy Woo lauded the pick for the Jazz, highlighting the fit on the Jazz alongside Ace Bailey.

"Boozer can score at a high level, but he doesn't need the ball to do so. That makes him a perfect compliment to the ball-dominant Ace Bailey. Boozer can score at all three levels and is a sneaky good defender, even if his athleticism isn't that of some others at his position. Add in the pick and pop combination between him and Bailey, plus his ties to the community? This is a slam dunk pick for the Jazz."

Kessler To Hit Free Agency After Voicing Displeasure In Utah

Image

Salt Lake City, UT. - Walker Kessler is a restricted free-agent and if he had his choice, a return to Utah would not be on the table.

"It's frustrating, losing as much as we have," noted Kessler about his upcoming free agency, "I'm excited to test the market, see where I have value. But I want to win," the former Auburn Tiger added.

Kessler did acknowledged that in the end, the Jazz hold all the cards with his restricted free agency.

Utah has already offered Kessler a qualifying offer at $15.2 million and Jazz CEO Danny Ainge has privately told inquiring teams they plan to match any deal for the shot-blocking center.

In other news, the Jazz accepted the team options for PG Keyonte George, PG Isaiah Collier, SG Anthony Black, SF Jamie Jaquez Jr, and SF Cody Williams.

Around the NBA the San Antonio Spurs unsurprisingly accepted Victor Wembanyama's team option, while Zach LaVine opted into his nearly $49 million dollar player option with the Kings.

Trae Young and James Harden opted out of their player options, while the Oklahoma City Thunder declined their team option on C Isaiah Hartenstein.

Utah Jazz 2026 Free Agency Preview

Salt Lake City, UT. - Despite entering the free agency Moratorium with nearly $36 million in cap room, taking into account Walker Kessler's QO at $15M, the Utah Jazz are not projected to be contenders for the likes of PG Trae Young, SG James Harden, or C Kristaps Porzingis.

In fact, outside of retaining Walker Kessler and adding another depth piece behind him, the Jazz may not sign anyone else.

"They've already got 13 players on their roster," noted Shams Charania, "And if you pencil Kessler back into the lineup, they have their starting rotation and bench set.

"Walker Kessler is their guy and from what I've been told, they will match any offer made to their enforcer."

Looking at Utah's roster, it's hard to see where any additional signees could fit if they intend to pass on the top players available, whether by their own decision or simply lack of interest from the elite players. Keyonte George, Isaiah Collier, Anthony Black, and Davion Mitchell already have a strangle hold on the guard positions. Ditto to small forward with reigning RoTY Ace Bailey and defensive specialist Jamie Jaquez Jr and power forward, with the recently drafted Boozer in front of Kyle Filipowski and Jonathan Isaac.

On the other side of the coin, if Utah isn't going to spend their free agency surplus they may look to use it to add future capital. There are plenty of teams with the assets to add more than one max level player, perhaps looking to capture the success of the Hawks last year with a pair of Trae Young and Kristaps Porzingis. The Jazz are open to taking on bloated contracts if draft capital is attached, according to sources close to Danny Ainge.

Even if they aren't going to be big players in free agency, expect the Jazz's name to surface frequently as a trade destination for teams looking to shed additional salary.
