NBA REWIND: JASON CHEN

Jason Chen is a fourth-year NBA power forward for the Portland Trail Blazers, selected 19th overall in the 2028 NBA Draft. A proud Chinese American trailblazer, Chen has earned a reputation as a dependable stretch four, known for his mid-range shooting, defensive versatility, and high basketball IQ.

He played two standout seasons at the University of North Carolina, helping lead the Tar Heels to the Sweet 16 and earning All-ACC honors before declaring for the draft. After finding his footing during his rookie campaign, Chen has become a key contributor to Portland’s frontcourt rotation. In 2031, he played an integral role in the Trail Blazers’ run to the NBA Finals, where they ultimately fell to the New York Knicks in six games.

Praised for his work ethic and team-first mentality, Chen continues to make his mark as both a rising talent and a role model on and off the court.

Taylor Rooks: Jason, you are now in your fourth year into the league—what’s been the biggest lesson you’ve learned since entering the NBA?

Jason Chen: Man, honestly, it’s learning how to stay ready. The league moves fast. You can go from playing 30 minutes one night to 10 the next. You’ve got to keep your head down, keep working, and stay mentally locked in.

TR: You were drafted 19th overall by Portland in 2028. Looking back, did you ever imagine the team would be in the NBA Finals just a few years later?

JC: I hoped for it. That’s why we play, right? We made the playoffs years prior, but couldn’t advance. So, to actually be there... walking onto the court in the Finals, hearing the fans, feeling the energy—it was surreal. We didn’t get the ending we wanted, but losing to New York in six made us hungrier. It showed us what’s possible.

TR: You’ve become known as a stretch four, a guy who can space the floor and defend multiple positions. Was that always your goal?

JC: I knew I wasn’t the flashiest, but I could shoot, I could move, and I understood the game. I wanted to be the guy coaches could trust in any lineup.

TR: What are you most excited about in the next chapter of your career?

JC: Growth. Personally, I want to keep evolving—add more to my handle, be more of a vocal leader. And for Portland? We’re not done. We’ve got a young core, we’ve tasted the Finals... I think we’re just getting started.

TR: Last question—what would you say to young Chinese American kids dreaming of the NBA?

JC: Don’t wait for permission to belong. Keep working, stay confident in your voice and your game. Representation matters—and we’re out here now.

TR: Jason, thank you so much.

JC: Thank you, Taylor. Always a pleasure.

Young guy is making strides. Helped push the Trail Blazers to the Finals. Might throw a few more player spotlights in as the season progresses to break up the gaming.

(13-8) Cleveland Cavaliers | 22 | 16 | 24 | 24 | 86

Madison Square Garden, New York, NY

NEW YORK (AP) Cleveland came into this game on a five game win streak and were looking to maintain their undefeated start to the season. Cleveland’s x-factor has been Amari Bailey, who is currently leading the team in scoring with just over 18 points per game coming off of the bench. This is Bailey’s second season with the Cavs and he’s hoping to make himself a permanent fixture as Cleveland is looking to make a return to the playoffs for the first time since 2026. Bailey’s scoring was missed tonight as he went 0-7 from the field, finishing with only three points earned at the charity stripe. Cleveland came out on fire, going on a 13-3 run and taking a 9 point lead before Anglo Messina knocked down a 15 footer to stop the bleeding. Noah Baldwin drilled back to back threes in the closing moments of the first quarter to cut Cleveland’s lead down to four points. New York was slow to get started, unable to knock down shots early on, but that changed in the second quarter as they scored 27 points, remaining hot through halftime as they scored another 32 points in the third quarter. Cleveland would go on a 14-5 run late in the fourth quarter to bring themselves within 10 points with two minutes left, but it wasn’t enough. TJ Baxter (12ppg) had a solid showing for Cleveland finishing with 20 points in the loss.

Injuries continue to pile up for New York as they lost Cade Cunningham in the fourth quarter. He is expected to miss two weeks with a quad injury.

The Knicks will out on the road to face the Detroit Pistons. Cleveland will finish their road trip as they take on the Washington Wizards.

Stephen Silas on Knicks’ game plan for Cleveland: When you have a team that’s been playing the way Cleveland has been playing lately, you want to apply defensive pressure early. Don’t let them get into a rhythm. And we were able to do that tonight. Bailey has been a factor for Cleveland and we were able to cut his water off tonight.
